THE FOOL'S FARM.

John Mosgar was a wealthy farmer, with some few hundred acre? of land, half, of which was fertile and well tilled, and the other half a range of rocky upland, from whicli nature drew forth nothing save scanty, almost worthless woods. The beRair' half of the farm wa* well stocked and well ordered the' farmhouse was the bent in the village of Daleford, and the outbuilding* were the envy of the neighbors.

John Mosgar had a knavish brother and a foolish son- his only relatives. Kobert, thebrothcr, by a just dispensation oi Providence, was a man of comparative indigencc, but his brother John overlooked his faults, and saw only his poverty and relationship and when dying'he called Kobert to his bedside, and .placing the hand of his fon Daniel in his, adjured him to tJ)P protect the imbecile, for his father's rake.

The fool smiled, and the knave smiled, too: the one tickled at the idea of having a new friend, the other at having a new victim, easily plucked and ruined. •'J will see after him, John," said Robert, with a look of assumed affection for his nephew.

(tI

will prove a father to

him when you are gona, and I will turn the farm to the best possible account, that your spirit may be pleased with what If hould do." **Enough, Kobert, adieu W© shall lwettt agq.in heaven. Farewell, my br:tin-wrecked son!" gasped the dying man. "Good-by, father," grinned Danniel, twisting his body awkwardly about. "Ilope you'll have a pleasant' jourdey bC ho!"

John Mosgar died, and Lawyer lwistwell!s assistance was called in ta settle the affairs. It has been the expressed will of Mr. Mosgar that his estate should be equally divided between his son and his brother. "Half to one and half to he other," werp Ijis wqrds, thqugh the wisdom, which prompted them was not equal to that of King Solomon.

Lawyer Twistwel), at the instigation of Kobert Mosgar, made a cruel construction of the will, and awarded the better half, £*11 fertile and arable land, to the nijole while the njean portion, consisting of meagre woodland and rocks, fell to the share of poor Daniel.

The more heartless and unprincipled of I lie neighbors Jartghed the fool when they hoai'd of --ie tjward, an4 cyngratulated him upon receiving so much "good upland." He, too, was well pleased, and capered about, singing mad songs, to find himself master of so much land. lie thought his the better pqrtion. and bounded over it with boisterous glee, climbing the trees, tearing up and hurling the rooks'about, plucking up the bushes, leaping down declivates, and drinking of the strewn), as If he wquld cqqvince each inanimate object that he was their sole lord and proprietor.

The rough waste that had been bestowed upon the witless, friendless creature, through the crafty connivance of the lawyer, 'J/nistwpll, suited»tlic fool's taste tc^a charm for there he could wander §n undisturbed solitude, in idiot "meditkii®!, fancy free," unconscious of the wealth 6f which he had been robbed by his uncle. 0|ie little hut alone stood on it, and that Hflrvad for his liqme and his bodily wants were supplied by such of the neighbors as obtained their fuel from his "farm." "The Lord will never prosper him who steals from a fool," said one of these neighbors to her husband.

He shrugged his shoulders with a "hump!" for he was conscious of having repeatedly drawn more wqod than he bargained for from, thp fool's farm," and was unwilling to believe in Heaven's anger thereat. "Heaven help those who help them selves," he driely replied, casting an eye out at the the mammoth pile of brushwood, for which he paid but a trifle in l^lirter.

His wife seemed to understand the look, but .-he sighed #s she poked the fire on t!»e hearth. l'qor Daniel!" shq exclaimed "I hope he will never suffer'from cold or hunger but he seems to be in a .fair way for it, with his uncle on one side and a selfish World on the other. His half was little enough a* it was, and all that is good upon it is fast dwindling away. What will he do when the wood ia-ali gone?'' "We had better be thinking "of our own circumstances," said the husband, snappishilv, and let the town take care of tho fools. As for Daniel, no doubt he is happier now than many wiser people. !'Happier than his uncle, I'll be bound" said the woman, "well-off in wordly goods though he be. Old Mosgar always looks digressed—suspicious and timid—as if he thought all the neighbors despised him fqr taking advantage of his nephew. And soihev do. And though ^everything looks well for him in a word'lv way, there will gotiie some change yet, depend upon it" "Perhaps so, aud perhaps not," replied the husband, indifferently. "But get the pudding ready, at any rate, for I'm in iT hurry to be off'."' iSo they smothered their sympathy with pudding and forgot the fool.

Soiue one talked with Daniel about his fynn and found hi'u satisfied. What will I do with my rock?" said lie with vacant, selv-sattstied smile. "Pile 'ein up. Make walls and forts. They will last longer than wood, and never burn up." "But y?u have got no cattle, Daniel, nor crops." 1 couldn't take care of them if I had. I can get enough meal and milk to eat, ai}d I tfon't want to work. I want to plav with the children, and walk about Uncle Kobert can't (}o it. am much fetter off than he is." "Your wood will be all gone soon. Then what will you Jo? You've got 110 money "It will be time enough for me then to pull up rocks and plant seeds,' said he looking wise. And I'll do it all myself so that the seed will know nie when I walk in the fields, O, I don't care for ijaything or anybody, with my farm! he chuckled, flinging himself upon the ground, and turning somersets in his torn clothes. Hal ha! ha! But I'm not proud,' he added, raising and looking grave. "That's the reason I lay with the dogs and the boys and the ducks and geese laugh when I roll in the straw."

The idiot seemed so contended that none cared lorg to dwell upon the great wrong

was left in undisturbed possession of he had fraudulently ayquired. Pity for the friendless fool was not deep enough to arouse opposition against the influential uncle.

But it/Was not ftog ere Riael wood,

wly cn to reafchis hopes of support, and now hunger compelled him to beg at the doors of h:s neigbors for his uncle forbade him to cross his threshold—averse to the presence of such KOfrfa^tandiag reproach, to his iniquity, and 30u thinking to drive him upon the pauper maintenance of the town.

Alas! the lord of the farm was a pitiaht to see, as. he wandered half og^dpor to?door in Daleford,

ble

Jiares ^ijUi\rQck» forhread, and

with no more of those vacant smiles which had shown his elation in his time of imaginary wealth. Distress had now joined hands with idocy, and the dream of comfort ad vanished from-the fool's brain. The haggard skeleton, in his life of chance found casual sustenance enough to keep his soul with his body still but that ghastly aspect of human life was more mocking khan even his sterile- apology for a farm., SJqjw and sad was the step of the saunterihgs carecrow through the town —the melancholy cynosure of pointing fingers, the desolate" victim of shameless relationship and a shattered brain. Alas for the spectral landed proprietor! Had Heavan's all-embracing glance no ray to guide his listless feet?

One day, as instinct set him begging after dinnertime, for the dismal miscellany of his daily food, a summer storm darkened the heavens, and the earth, and peals of thunder startled all animated things. Tlfe /lower* bowed in terror, and the invisible milliners who deck the bonnet of nature flew to their most secret haunts. But he fool stalked- ab-oad in thfc pelting riiri, and lifted his lack-lustre eves to the furidus source of the tempest, half-amazed, half-delighted, at the intermittent fires.

Suudonlv a shriek was heard along the road and," looking backward, he saw upon a frightened horse a young maiden of the village, clinging to the mane of the gal lopping animal, which, snorting with the alarm, approached him

Daniel Mosgar was a fool—but he was -man. A wise, one might, have stepped aside in fear tbtU-Daniel seized a broken bough by the wayside and brandishing the huge weapon fur a moment, darted into the middle of the road and, as the wild, careering steed came thundering on with his insensate burden, with a well directed force the limb was brought in contact with horse's head. The concussion was tremendous, and the aqirjial, panting and quivering, with swelled veins fell heavily to the grouud.

Happily for the, girl,"--whose hold was upon his mane, she was hanging upon the opposite side to that on which he fell and before the half-stunned anirqal cpuld struggle to his feet again, tfye ic^iot, inspired by the emergency, sprang forward and pulled the maiden from hec perilous position. The shouts of approaching men, one of whom was her father, now attracted his attention, and in ft f?w moments, the girl, stiU qnco^cious was in her parent's arms. "Well done, Dan'el God bless you foK saving my daughter's life!" was the grateful exclamation of Mr. Fontley, as the party, bearing the girl and leading the now passive horse, proceeded to his house, near by. "You have that whioh 1 sljall never forget, and I will do what I can to repay, poor fellow added the lather- "What agents the Almighty sometimes choose for his work!" continued Fontley. "A fool has been the means of saving my only child from a ride.to bloody grave?"

Helen Fontley was but fifteen on that day of her great danger, and was returning home from a customary jaunt when overtaken the storm, fhe father was wealthy, and centured in her all his most cherished hopes. The heroic deed of Daniel affected Fontley deeply, and filled him with active compassion for the oun^ man. He resolve^ to be his friend, and he was so. Qut of the mouth of the thunder followed blessings for the fool. With the passage of the clouds on that day came sun upon the soul of his fortunes.

Having inquired after his affkirs, on tho next day Mr Fon.ley rode over to the "fool's farm," and made a b.ief survey of it—Daniel and a few others accompany him. "What do you think of the division of the property V" was the question of one.

Was it not cruel?" "Daniel, come to my house. Cruel?— •no!" replied Mr. Fontley, his face brightening #p with a meaning smile, as they left the sterile upland?. "Robert Mosgar did a greater favor to h's nephew by the division than his ignorance intended.

If I am not much mistaken. But we will see, soon how it turns out." From that day Daniel was amply provided for in the house of Mr. Fontley, and meanwhile the secret of the laser's words became revealed. The -"fool's lam}" prqve4 rich in cqal. Thp experienced eye of Fontley had detected, in the course of his visits to it, indications whioh had escaped the notice of all others, and which subsequent prospecting proved true. Those ban-en undulations of soil contained a mighty mine of coal, and the wealth of the grateful and delighted Fontley developed the back treasure for the benefit of Daniel.

Numerous workmen were soon employed upon the before derided waste, and Dal«ford in a few years derived its chief importance from these fields. Capital and enterprise were attracted to the town, and hundreds of families were supported by itvhor in the mineral "bowels of the harmless earth," and the star of the fool rose suddenly up in-the sky of benefaction. Fontley, his patron and self-ap-pointed iigent, was true to his grateful instincts and his important trust, and Daniel Mosgar became the possessor of untold wealth,

As If Heaven's rebuke were designed to be-immediately manifea^, the strata did not extend into the land of Robert Mosgar, and lie saw with double mortification the contrasted wealth of the nephew he had deposed. Between bis effects to purchase anv part of the "fool's fyrm," or all of it, at any price,' stood the sagacious^ watchful and honest Fontley and ot what pitying Providence had hold in mysterious reserve far the day of the idiot's destitution, the mind and heart of Fontley became the guard.

Nor was this all the fortune of the fool. In his youth he had-been "bright," as the saying is but a disease of the brain had settled tlierp, converting it to idiocy: Years of full darkness had lefl no hop of a revolution of reason, but now tli reign wf folly had expired. The suddent change in his lot threw Danniel into a state of feverish exultation, which resulted in severe sickness, from which ski II full treatment raised him gradually to health and sense again.

He beat his breast, and strode among the ruined fields, and knelt and eobb£cFalond: "Now, Oh, Lord, I know my sin! And though my heart ib broken, itis purified."'

And so ends the story of the "fool's farm." So closes It with a moral: I«tnot the oppressor be to confident. 5Ehe changes of New England's April is not so great as the changes of man's estate and they who exult in ertiel self-reliance, over the unfortunate and, unhappy, may take their places to-morrow.

SPECIAL NOTICES.

Infection In the Air.

Experimental chemists have repeatedly analyzed the air At unhealthy seasons, in the hope of detecting, the invisible virus which produces epidemic diseaie. They have not yet discovered it, and scarcely any two of them agree as to its nature. ^This ts of little consequence. It is sufficient to know that this poisonous principle exists., «nd that a safeguard against its insiduous influonce has been provided. In the spring and early summer, when fevfir and ague, remittent fever, and other periodical diseases of that class ox# prevalent, it is only necessary to fortify the system with a course of Hostettcr's Stomach Bitters to oscape them. If this preoautiotf has been neglected, which it never ought to be in any district liable to such visitations, and if the paroxysms of malarious fever have actually commenced, they may always be checked and broken up by a eourse bf that owerful vegetablo tonic and alterative.— juinine was once considered the only specific for chills and fevers it is now generally admitted that this nauseous alkaloid is a danger ous medicine, and that its secondary effects are more to be dreaded than any form of intermmittent fever. It is simply a tremendous astringent. It }oes not touch the disordered liver, or regulate the bowels, or in any way improvo tho conditiou of tho aniuial fluids. Ilostetter's Bitters, on the other hand, in addition to being a bettor and safer tonic than pny preparation of quinine, has a balsamic effect upon the wnole system.. It" is aperient an'd antibiilous, as Well as invigorating, and purities the secretions as well as reg^ ulatcs tho secretive organs^ It stimulates the apctitc, strengthens the stomach, somites the nerves,,promotes healtpful perspiration, and induces qniet sleep. Asa stomachic it hoe no rival. Cases of Indigestion that no other tonic seems capable of alleviating, arc cured in a few weeks by its regular use,

IKoller's Norwegian Col Liver Oil is less oUjcotionable to the tasto and smell, it is moro-read'fly taken by delicate persons and children, is more easily assimilated, and is productive of more immediate benefit than other kinds of oil are.

Db. J. MARION SIMS says "For some years I had given up the use C|f Ood Livor Oil altogether but since my attention was called by .Dr. Sityre to Peter Moller Cod Liver Oil, I have prescribed it almost daily, and have every reason to bo perfectly satisfied with it.
