This evening the Republicans of this city arc called to meet in th'eir'Respective ward*, to nominate candidates for election to the City Council. There is no man so deficient in intelligence as to need reminding of th«- ~W5Hrtiiating good men and strong candidates. And there is no reflecting man who will not readily adnrit that it is his (f^ty to use his influence to secure proper nominations. It is not more important to go to the polls on election day, than it is to attend the nominating conventions and it is often the case that a failure to attend and give proper direction to a nominating convention, renders futile all efforts that can be made oa the day of election. Jf by using the same amount of time, and taking an equal amount of pains, that are required to attend award meeting, every person attending could make five dollars —or even one dollar—in inoney, ther^ would never be any lack of interest, and "slim attendance" vould never be known. But when only the interests of the public are to be served, it become? ""everybody's business/' and is, therefore, almost invariably neglected. Is it not time to turn over a new leaf" in this respect?— Cannot every Republican voter afford to devote an hour to the interests of the city, and give his influence to fxcure the nomination of such candidates as wilf command the hearty and unanimous support of the party? It is ah old m'jteim that "Heaven helps those who try to help themselves," and the inference is clear, thaft those who will not "try to help ^hemselves" are not deserving of sncctes.
There is not a ward in this city that may not, by united andelrn&l be carried by the Republican party, if care be taken to select, in every casfe^ rthe strongest man for the race. -i— 1 ACCIDENTSfc AND DRUG-CLERKS. Krom Frank Leslies Newspaper.]
It is an old adage that "accident happen in the best regulated families," yet, from the time of one's birth, almost, lie tinds blame attached to it for his mother called him a careless brat when lie stub bed his toe, as he came home with his pitcher-handle, having lost the remainder and its contents on the-way and the servant-maid was berated & good-for-noth-ing. careless hussy "for bfeaking the Wibfe off the Houp-turecn. (The be sure, she said "it wa.s cracked before," and she never said a word when that crack was made).
A man slips on an orange-rind, a banana-skin, or a peach-pit, and sprains his ankle or breaks his leg—ar\d lie never gets blamed but only because it is his own leg that was hurt. If he had but, in slipping, hit as forcibly against any passerby, and thrown him down, by that accident he would have been found worthy of any amount of complaint, in which sondi hard words would- unquestionably get mixed into the hurried expressions.
Accidents, among other beneficent uses —.such as being good for trade spoiling crockery-sets, which require replenishing making jobs for doctors and carriagebuilders, etc.—were especially intended to try one's temper, and to test their politeness. A lady has no end of trouble, and, perhaps has put on some airs, even occasionally a well-imitated hysterical crisis, to get anew silk dress, und she is wearing it for the first ti|'ne at "a grand party, wit eh, amid the crush of the supper-room, "poor stupid, lubberly Jones" (as she calls him, nftcr she gets "home), pours a gla« of champagne all over it. And she—lovely woman!—looks at him so smilingly, and rays: "Really, it is no matter I dont think anv hurt is done." But the fact is, .Air. Cautlle hears a word about it before he sleeps: "If it had only gone over one breath, I shouldn't have minded," she says "but that, c— dolt, Jones, sprinkled it all over."'
It was but yesterdav that, in photographing the West Point ring—in our last paper—it was accidentally knocked from the stand, and the fall shattered the engraved onyx stone. Ball, Black «& Co. insisted upon it that it was of no consequence, and absolutely refused to put in another at our expense, declaring "that it was theif accident, and really of no consequence."
It is quite useless to attempt to enumerate the kinds of accidents that occur—the results of natural stupidity, from the mind being intent upon some other thought, or from any other reason. All that we desire is to draw attention to the fact that every one is the subject of accidents which, as they occur to every one, according to Buckle's argument, must be unavoidable.
It may be noted, however, that accidents happen most frequently to individuals who have imperfect natural abilities, and to those who are overworked. The general housemaid is a marked example. She has not a moment of ease or time for reflection, so incessant are lier multifarious duties. She must and does have many accidents phe "has to tnany irons in the fire.
The accidents most melancholy in their results, the most severely punished, and for which the community have the least sympathy, are those which are seen in our apothecary shops. If a grocer sends you home coffee, when you ordered sugar or tea, when you ordered flour, it may be annoying, the effects are not very serious but if you ask for sulphate of quinine, and the drug-clerk inadvertantly pits up sulphate of morphine, or oxalic acid is mistaken for Epsom salts, the result is apt to be very serious yet both were only accidents of the same character. The only difference is that one is dealing in more important materialsjthan the other.
Qf-coav*theargpinsut is, drug-clerks i_Jihoil2ba®o£-4 i»iglie!r grade of intellect, ^better educated, and lew hardly worked than the grocer's man. To attain this gpade of men, more money ifl required.

We believe the majority of druggclerks of "this city—who are men of some considerable mental culture—we scarcely as well ^pald as the grocer's clerks. They nave Jiad a long prelimnary study, which is unnecessary for the grocers they most be conversant with tfic Latin language, mast be neat and handy, gentlemanly in manners, veil dressed they must work, every day, And be at beck and call every •night— or in a large store, every other night—during the wtole years with no rest on Sundays, or vacation on holidays. I fat work all day and evening, instantly standing on their feet, with hand and brain continually employed, they must be ready to work all the night if necessary. If up a half-dozen times a night they must be wide-awake, polite jwd accurate all the next day. They eat their meals when they can get out from a busy store. Tired, sleepy with headache, or debilitated, there must Iks the (•ame exactness, the most rapid care. One worild suppose such services were Kprth as much as the bank clerk's from 10 A. M., or^the dry-goods saleman's salary and commission? Bht the truth is, that these high mental attainments, the superior knowledge of pharmacy and Chemistry acquired by years of study, are not paid as well a-rthe mason's eight ^or ten hours a day.
Tlte fact is, that there are too many drugstore?, and too let#" clerks. The multitude of little shops, all around every city, are supported by the sale of cigars, soda-water, patent medicine (which, requiring no preparation, could just as well be sold in a grocery store,) tooth and trlothCR, hrttshes, candiws, wax flowers, and almost everything else.
It would appear that the community are unwilling to pay for the medicine 'ttiey requiws.- Theyprefer to.support any dirty, illy managed, handy shop, "right round the corner," rather than pay a sixpence more, or goablockor two farther.fbr competent intelligence, and even for honesty. Nor is the profession much better they refused to support a store open by John Meakin, years ago, solely for prescription^ jand from which all knickknacks and quack medicine were excluded. For oar part, whenever we hear of the very rare accidents of druggists, we are struck with wonder that they are not more frequent and the last thing we should think of would be to request a .coroner's jury to send a poor fellow to the Tombs for a fault—if it is one—that we havelittle doubt, we should commit more, frequently, especially if routed from a 'warifi beq for. a sixpence-worth of "caster ile"—for we think patience would sometimes give out, if jve were really wakened upi
Now, the only practical lesson that.can be draw/i from the foregoing fapts, is for every individual to take some pains to support a good drugstore, where there is business *ejoug|i (lone, and the prices are sufficient, to employ cabpale men, and in such numbers that they may not be overworked, arid'teiipecially where their brains are nq£ muddled by top little .pleep.

Life is the Gift of God. 1 Whee we are siok this life is obscured, under a cloud, oppressed with humors. Experience has taught us certain means, which, never fail for their removal. The child receives with his life the seeds of his death. It may take one, or one hundred years, before the seeds bear their sad fruit, but-just as sure, as the seeds of death ripen life ceases. Purging is the grand safeguard, becausp the^what fosters the seeds of death are taken away, oxpel led from the body.
Govern Yourselves by Experience. My child, aged five years had scarlet fever, and for five days had constant fever.'. By order of the doctor Igave bee syrup of rhubarb she took nearly a pint, but her bowels continued closed. Qn the fifth day the doctor said her bowels must be opened or she would be lost. I proposed Brandreth's Piljs to tlys he would not consent—saying sho was too weak. I consulted with my husband, and we concluded to give her three pills. In about four hours they operated, filling half full, a common chamber. After that operation the fever left her, and she rapidly, recovered.— Reference, 206 Clermnot Avenue, Brooklyn.
