The Career of an Actress—A Pitiable Story. The San Francisco Morning Call gives this account of the life of an unfortunate acircns now in a hospital in that city: "The actreffl referred to made her fir.it appearance in California about nix yearn ago at the Metropolitan Theater, and created quite a favorable impression upon thealre-goers, and caused nearly one-hall of the younger portion of the town to go daft. She was very beautiful, of fine, commanding appearance, and dressed with remarkably good taste, and was always sure to attract considerable attention whenever she promenaded Montgomery street. ".She terminated her engagement at the Metropolitan Theater and disappeared from sight for some time, and none but her acquaintance* knew of her whereabouts. She had almost faded out of the memory of the public, wiien she was announced to appear at one of the minor theaters. The public talked, and expressed their surprise that she should condescend to appear at- any but a first-class Iioti.se, but probably the actress knew her ,vn necessities, and accepted the engagement because she was compelled to. She played at this house several weeks, and then made a tour through the interior of the State, appearing at Marysville, Sacr.iniento, Stockton, San Jose, and other to.vn.i. She also went to Virginia and played an engagement at Piper's Operahouse, and returning, went to Oregon, and remained there some months. Upon her return to San Francisco she again appeared at one of the Melodeons, and then Kunk into obscurity. Two or three years have passed away since she disappeared entirely from sight, and perhaps every body imagined that she had gone East, but it appears that such has not been the case. She lias remained here in San Francisco, and has at last been attacked by consumption and having exhausted all li cr means, she has had at last been compelled to seek an asylum in tiie City and County Hospital. The persons who in the days of her success and prosperity crowded around her and sighed for her smiles have all forgotten and neglected her, and now, instead of appearing each evening before the footlights, and receiving the applause of delighted audiences, she lies in a ward in a hospital upon a lowlycot, waiting the ringing-down of the curtain upon the last act. Here is a sad case, and her late a sad commentary upon the stability of the public. At this time one firm friend would be worth more to her than all the applause that was ever showered upon the greatest actress that ever walked the mimic stage-
Mr. (Ti-ooley and his Visitor. The New York correspondent of the Philadelphia Telegraph, tells this story, illustrating Mr. Greeley's imperturbable manner with horses: "Mr. Greeley, like other distinguished men, is bored with visitors whom it is not always easy to git rid of. Among their), one day, was a man—'an old subscriber like an old friend, who takes the liberty of saying, disagreeable things—who has fonie grudge against Horace on account ofsonie thing that had been said in the Trinbiie. So without either standing quiet within or entirely without the sanctum, but remaining perched upon the threshhold, he commenced a tirade of some twenty minuicV lentli' to which Mr. Greeley, writing spider's-web on the foolscap before him vouchsafed no reply. "You've been carrying on this game a longtime," said the subscriber at length in desperation, "but I've found you out." "I'd rather you'd found me out than found nio at home," answered the caliligraphic sage
I've been talking to you all this while just to tell von what I think ol'yoii," said the angry visitor. "You've been a devilish lonir time doing it," replied Greeley. "AndI've just come to say that you are no gentleman,'' added the subscriber, sure now that he had hit the mark. "Who the said I was?" remarked Greeley, goin^ 011 with his writing. "The subscriber bolted, and was never seen in that oflice again, and Greeley finished the article as quietly as though nothing had happened."

SPECIAL NOTICES.
Help for the Miserable,
No wonder that the face of the dyspeptic ha* a dragged, worn, hopeless expression that is pitiful to see. No wonder that the miserable martyr to indigestion is fretful, irritable, and unsocial. Whoever can bear the pangs of this tormenting complaint cheerfully, and with an unruffled temper, is little shprt of a saint- But why should human fortitude continue to bo thus severely tried, when ftD absolute specific for the diso&sd is always at band. Everywhere within toe limits of civilization in this hemisphere Hostetter's Stomach Bitters is obtainable, and the history of the first ease of dyspepsia in which it has been administered in vain, has yet to be written. The sickness at the stomach, the sense of weakness and stupor, the feeling of emptiness anfl hollowness before eating, and of oppression aftorwards, the fluttering of the misc. the intense nervous irritation, the morid indisposition to exertion, the weariness of life, and indifference to all its pleasures, which are among the symptoms of the disease in its chronic form are rapidly ameliorated by the tonic operation of this palatable vegetable restorative, which seems to renovate and quicken all the dormant forces of the system, and rouse tho mind from the appathy and gloom insoparoble from a derangement of tho digestive and secretive functions. In ordidary cases a fow weeks suffices to complete the cure but when the disease is complicated, it often is, with torpidity of the liver, severe constipation, impurity of the blood, and a sluggish circulation, a longer time may be required. Persevere, however, and the result is certain. An encouraging improve-J ment will be perceptible from day to day, and the convalescent,'knowing and feeling that he or she is on the high road to health, will aw^it the happy issue with comparative patience.
Holler's Norwegian CoU llvrr Oil is less objectionable to the taste and staell. it is more readily taken by delicate persoas and children, is more easily assimilatod, and is produetivo of more immediate benefit than other kinds of oil are.
DK. J. MAKION SIVB says: "For some yoars I hud given up the use of Cod Liver Oil altogether but since my attention was_called by Ir. Sayre to Potor Moller's Cod Liver Oil, I have prescribed it almost daily, and have every reason to bo perfectly satisfied with it."

Life is the Gift of God. Whee we aro sick this life is obscured, under a cloud, oppressed with humors. Experience has taught us certain moans, which nover fall for their removal. The child roccivos with his life the soeds of bis doath- It may tako one, or one hundred years, before tho seeds bear their sad fruit, but just as sure as the seeds of death ripen, life ceases. Purging is the grand safeguard, because then what fosters the seeds of death are takon away, expelled from the body.

By order of the doctor I gave her syrup of rhubarb sho took noarly a pint, but hor bowels continued closed. On tho fifth day tho doctor said her bowels must ba openod or she would bo lost.
