THE FAIR SEX

The latent woman question—"What is home without a baby?"

The womans* rights movement lias found an unexpected champion in the Empress Eugenie, who advocates the clec tion of ladies to the French Academy, and particularly that of Mme. George Sand.

If women take Susan E. Anthony's advice and "stop crying," they will lose one ot their mo3t effective accomplishment ?. Since the world began feminine tears have exercised more inflncnce than mas culine wisdom.

Reporters do sometime* tell the truth, and are often unconsciously satirical. Here, for instance, is an obituarv, brief, and to the point: "Mr. was an estimable citizen. He lived uprightly He died with perfect resignation. He had recently been married."

It ifl said that Brigham maintains marital discipline whenever his wives are likely to prove "too many" for him, by telling them that he will go to heaven alone rather than have scratching and fighting around hhn. This quiets them till noxt time.

A Boston writer corner to the defense of woman against the current notion that they are peculiarly addicted to gossip, alleging that in a country grocery, among barrels of molasses and piles of salt fish, more gossip is talked by men in one evening than is heard in all the farin-houwes of the town.

During the delivery of a lecture by Mrs. Dr. Mary Walker, in Kansas a few days ago, a precocious youth in the audience cried out, Are you the Mary that had a little lamb?" "No!" was the ready reply, "But your mother had a little jackass!"

Iowa now offers a promising field for the zealous advocates of woman suffrage. Both branches of the present Legislature have given in their adhesion to the doctrine, and have passed a resolution to incorporate it into the Constitution of that State. But before the proposed amendment is finally adopted, it must be approved by the next Legislature, and then ratified by the popular vote in 1872.

A new parasol has been invented. It is so contrived as to answer alternately the purpose of a parasol and screen.' The rod is not, as in ordinary parasols, inserted in the middle of the circle which forms the shade, but near the circumference, so as to give the person carrying it the whole benefit of the shadow it castsTouch a spring^ and the little instrument is'ti parasol touch the same spring with another motion, and it is an upright screen.

TiiE^Qeorgetown (Colorado) Miner Oh's for a colony of kitchen maids and adds that "Georgetown is a perfect paradise for the hardier class of female myrmidons. Last summer people went hungry to bed for the want of female cooks and working servant girls. They were be" yond the temptation of either love or money. A few hundreds from the large Eastern cities might find comfortable homes in Colorado they might find good husbands here, and they can count on finding wages of from ten to fifteen dollars pet week. Come on, maids—but not old mauls."

"Frou-Fkou" is destined to become an American word. It is already oivthe lips of society, and soon the populace will have it. In France, "Frou-Frou" signifies the rustle of a silk on the stage it signifies a light-hearted, thoughtless, a pi a it & smile on her face, and goes to death with a laugh on her lips! In America it will become the Bynonym for that frightfully common and largely increasing class of fashionable girls who marry withou1 contemplation, becoming wives iu name, while they remain coquettes and tlirts in spirit and who kick over the marriage traces without a qualm of conscience! "Frou-Frou," in short, will signify here among us, fashionable fastness, fashionable wedded life, dress, coquetry, flirtation, gilded danger, and golden mockery of wedded life!

It

is important for ladies to be informed that the prevailing fashion of high heels, if we may inav take the opinion of anatomists and surgeons, and others who ought to know, is producing verv disastrous results. Leading the wearer as it does to walk on tip-toe instead of on the ball of the foot and on the heel, it throws the muscles and sinews of the leg out of gear, and twists and turns them in a very objectionable manner. The constant strain damages the form of the leg, and causes, or may cause positive disease. One of its most curious effects is that of destroying the symmetry and beauty of the. leg in that respect which is universally considered so attractive and charming, as that, when nature has failed to fulfill its work, resort is had to artificial means of supplying the deficiency—in other words, it shrinks and dwindles a«d finally wastes away those graceful protuberances called, for want of a better name, the "calves ,,

Only a Calico Dress*

BY MARY W. STANLEY GIBSON.

Too bad! too bad! What if Jane should be taken sick with the fever that was flying about, and die and leave him! Could he spare the money for her coffin ind her shroud? Why, what, what could

Oh, I don't want anything she sobbed. "I'm ready to do without everything, if I must. But it is hard to work day after day for vour good, Josiah, and then to be told 'That a new calico dress has just come home for you," he cried out in a trembling voice, wiping his own tears away \fitli the brown paper parcel. "Jane, I didn't mean to be crass—and just look here."

He rent the brown paper in every diection as he spoke, and the snowy, rosesprigged calico fell over her knees in Kracefnll folds. "Oh, Josiah—you dear, good, dear Josiah she exclaimed. "And yon really thought of me like this, and didn't mean one word of all you said! What a goodfor nothing little wretch I was to doubt you!"

She smiled brightly at him through her tears, and flinging her arms around his neck, gave him a kiss worth five thousand calico dresses, all told.

And home was bright again, and-hap-pv, and the new dresss was made and worn for many a pleasant day thereafter. But Josiah Webb never forgot the lesson it lmd silently preached to liim and he is to-day a fonder and a better husband because of that trifling thing—only a calico dross.

and Josiah Webb, mattering something mous sales is an argument In its faror. that was not exactly a blessing, snatched I —1^^ his hat and darted out of the Use into jg^^fectionTbTe^f fh" tS£a$Imell. it is more readily taken by delicate persons and children, is more eHify assimilated, and is productive of more immediate benefit than ether kinds of oil art.'

his farmyard, where for half an hour or so, lie confided his sentiments regarding children, isT"more ewify^assimilated^and is womankind in general, and his wife in -j--'-particular, to a select audience of a dozen cows.

And then Mr. Webb began to cool down, and to see some reason in his wife's remarks and request, after all. "You get your house-work done very cheap, Josiah!" It was the keen truth of the remark that had stung him so keenly. "Well, it was cheap! JTo any hired girl, capable of doing the work that Jane turned off so readily, he must pay at least a dollar and a half per week. Would the work be done then as Jane did it? Would all things be so neat and clean and orderly as now? Would there be need of watching eyes and anxious heart to see that the hired girl earned the money which was paid? Was there suchneed now?

What did Jane do, by the way? Got breakfast, washed dishes, swept, made beds, and put the house in apple-pie order from cellar to garret, before twelve each day. Had dinner—a nice one, too—smoking on the table at twelve exactly, herself presiding, neatly dressed, and with a pleasant smile. Set the house in order again. Got tea at six, and cleared up after it. Washed, ironed, baked made shirts and sjieets and towels and tablecloths made butter and cheese for the market fed poultry raised flowers for* the autumn show at the fair knit 'stockings turned, patched, contrived took care of him in sickness, and fussed with and petted him in health. And for all this he gave her—what? She had asked a little advance of wages—only a calico dress— and had been refused!

Madness! Paralysis Death! may ensue from using preparations for coloring the hair charged with acetate of lead and sulphnr. Tou may know them by tbe beavy metallic sediment which has to be shaken up before the disgusting compound can be applied. The"Journal of Chemistry "says there are thirty of them in the market. There ih but one dye in existence which contains no deleterious substance, and that is Cristadoro's Excelsior Hair Dye, which has been carefully analyzed by Professor Chilton, and declared by him to contain no lead or any other hurtful ingredient. A pretty thing enough, with its snowy ground and delicate sprigs of rosebuds just the thing to set off Jane's rosy cheeks, and dark bright eyes and jetty hair. He bought it, he paid for it, and"back he went to the farm-house to find Jane. .She was sitting in the kitchen, in her own favorite chair—the morning's work undone, and her head resting on her clasped hands. ITe heard her sob—he saw a bright tear steal through the slender lingers, and down the great clumsy fellow went beside her, on his knees, package in hand. "Jane, what is it? Don't cry, Jane. Life is the Gift of God. Whee we are sick this life is obscured, under a cloud, oppressed with humors. Experience has taught us, certain means, which never fail for their removal. The child receives with his life the seeds of. bis death, It may take one, or one hundred years, bofore the seeds bear their sad fruit, but just as sure as the seeds of death ripen, life ceases. Purging is the grand safeguard, because then what fosters the seeds of death are taken away expelled from the body. 'MiAi-f.: if.*

Govern Tfonrmelve* by Experience. My child, aged five years, had scarlet fever, and for five days had constant fever. By order of the doctor I gave her syrup of rhubarb she took nearly a pint, but her bowels continued closed. On the fifth day the doctor said her bowels must be opened or she would be lost. I proposed Brandreth's Pills to this he would not consent—saying she was too weak. I consulted with my husband, and we concluded to give her three pills. In about four hours they operated, filling half full a common chamber. After that operation the fever left her, and she rapidly recovered-— Reference, 206 Clermnot Avenue, Brooklyn.

A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINK, us Diploma at office will show, has been longer engaged in the treatment of Venerorul Seyuul and Privaee Disease' than any othor Physician in t!t. Louis.

Syphillis, Gonorrhea, Gleet, Stricture, Orchitis, llernis and Rupture, all Lninury diseases, Syphilitic or Mercurial Affections of the Throat, Skin or Bones, are treated with unparalleled success.

Spermatorrhea, Sexual Debility und Impoteucy, as the result of self-abu.-e in youth, sexual excess in mature years or other causes, and which produce some of the following effects, as Nocturnal Emissions, HlotchcB, Debility, Dizziness, Dunnes of sight. Contusion of ideas, Dvil Forbodings, Aversion to Society of Fi-iuales, Luss of Memory and Sexual Powcr.ivnd rendering Marriiixo improper, are permanently cured.

The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice aro unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis papers pruvo that he has been located there longer by years than any other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in the WcH, unrivalled anywhere. ArJ, with expcrienci£ can be relied upon, and the Doctnr can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past success and present posiion lie stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PHYSICIAN WHOSE

REPUTATION IS ITNION-WIDK, ARK WORTH READING. Doctor Whittiijr publishes a Medical Pamphet relating to Venereal Diseases and the disastrous and varied consequences ot setfabuse, that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable those affected to determine the nature of their ccniplaint and give a written statement of their i-use that will unswer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends that may requiro advice, can supply them with this valuable work" sending their address, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly nosubiect is of more importance than purity of olood nnd perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study ot a certain class of diseases and treats thousands of cases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only general practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to the Doctor alter reading his Medical Pamphlet. Communications confidential. A triendly talk will cost you nothing.
