Express:

Yon may know

that some of the educators of the capital paid a visit last week to the State Soymal School in your city. Prof. A. C'. Shortridge, Superintendent of Pnfelic Schools, Wm. A. Bell, Principal of the High School, Messrs. Button and Waltz, Assistant .Superintendents. Miss Fnrnell Training Teacher, and other teachers took advantage of a short vacation to make a .trip to St. Louis to visit the schools of that city and learn what they could. En route they stopped oyer one day to visit the Normal, and they came home perfectly enthusiastic in its praises They spoke in the highest terms of President .Tones. They were favorably im pressed by his appearance at the 'Stall Te^che^s' Convention last printer, but as a practical teacher and manager. c£ a School for teachers, he far .surpasses ihei expectations.

5

In fact tfaey. make no qualifications in expressing theft -approbation and their admiration of the entire spirit of the institution and of the methods adopted. Prof. Button declares that lie never learned so much during any other single day as during that spent in Terre, Haute. They saw much to admirfe, and from which to learn, at St. Louis, but. nothing, as they, say, ..equal to our own Normal School. This report, brought back by persons irt our city beSt qiniTffi&i 'fndge7"aW fisr"#ell qualified as any in the State, is exceedingly gratifying to us, as it must "also be to you. We are interested in the institution because it belongs to the Statf^and you ai interested, for the same reason, apd then, of course yon itlso have^some"local pride in the matter. I do not. doubt.that your p^ple arein h'i^art^' sympathy ifith

President Jonea tind his- corps of teachers, and are doing every tiling possible to aid -tlrenr in their efforts to«make this school, at least equal to like institutions in other States. I felt it but justjliat your community and the State generally should know the report brought back by

our teachers. \imx if! Brownlow, Drake and Revels.

Mrs. Mary Clemner Ames, in her last letter to the independent, calls attention ,to a ^tjiking illustration of the changes wliich are 'wrought hv the "whirling of time," as follows: "Senator Brownlow sits before Senator iteteta jW^hen Mr:i)rake congratulated the latter on his speech there, the three men stirred the anost wonderful associations. There was one, now a Senator of the United States, who eight years before asked for an obscure seat in the Senate Gallery in vain. .. He could not pass its door because his skin Was a siiade darker than that of the doorkeeper though his mother was Scotqh woinap and his father a free'man. There, quivering with palsy in every limb, sat another, who a few years ago prayed that if he died at the North his coffin might be made open at one end, so that could crawl away from the Abolitionists. There was another man, who a few years ago presented a bill to the Legislature of Missouri that all free men of color in that State should be sold into slavery, 'which bill would haveinclnded the Senator with whom lie was_ now shaking hands. These three'men were all friends to-day. Well, the old earth moves!"

In fact!, can von conceive of a furinier sight than a full rigged fashionable woman? Hat, tair, potfder, gloves, Hngs, sash, boots, wiggle and "bend"," all unite in making up a most amusing concern.
