LEWIS CASS* ix'tt

lie Used It.

II

From the Lansing Republican.) General Lewis Cass died 18G, at Detroit, leaving a fortune of about two million dollars. He commened life in New IJampliire so poor that his mother rocked him in a sap trough for want of a cradle and he never threw off the feeling of poverty tliu.s early impressed upon his mind. His last years were clouded with the fear that liin family would come to want, and he left not a dollar to any public or charitable object.

the year

tiful Peninsula. But mart of Cass' money: wss made on a farm of about two hundred acres, which he bought within the limits of .Detroit, lying only four blocks west of the new City Hall, and extending from the liver back one mile or more He purchased this farm about the year. 1830 for $12,000, paying $10,000 cash down and giving his note for $2,000—the only note he ever signed. Detroit was at that time a struggling little village of wooden buildings, containg only 2,221 inhabitants. For several years afterwards its growth was slow, and it received a check in the cholera season of 1832. Gen. Cass did not seem to have made a great Speculation, and when lie was offered $25,000 for liis farm—more than doubling his investment in less than three years—he thought seriously of closing with the offer, and selling out. His home was then in Washington, and he was Secretary of war under ''Old Hickory." But he asked the advice of an intelligent Eastern business man who was visiting him in Detroit. After dinner, one day, the two gentlemen walked over the farm from the river bank to its outermost boundaries observing its noble water| front, its level stretch of land, aflording much 'favorable street grades, and its proximity to the center of business.

Said Gen. Cass' friend to him: "If you wish to sell the fari\ 1 will give you $50,000 for it." "Oh, then, my mind is made .up will not sell it at all," replied the General.

He held on to this choice piece of real estate, and became very rich through the industry and enterprise of others around him. He tinally sold at good prices, scattering lots, giving ten years' time for most of the purchase money, with interest at seven per cent, but stipulating always that buildings of considerable value should be erected on the lots within a short period. He issued land contracts of the above nature, but no deeds until 4lie purchase money was all paid up. Of course the improvement made on apart of his lots greatly enhanced the value of the remainder, so that what land he had left was continually getting to be worthmore than the whole at previous periods.

He also made a lucky hit and secured cheap immortality- for his name by giving a large lot for a Union school-house, in the midst of his farm, on condition that the city should erect a handsome building and iron fence around it, within a given time, and name the .school-luxi.se after him. The "Cass Union School" rapidly increased the value of all neighboring lots.

We never heard that General Cass was a hard creditor. He avoided litigation, and even in his will provided lbr settling, by arbitration, disputes that might arise over his property, lie made his fortune honestly, as the world goes, but knew little of the luxury of benevolence.

AMERICAN WOMEN ABROAD.

Housekeeping and Husband Hunting

f'Krom the Now York Post 1 eonfess, however, that our American women in Europe appeared to me on the whole .cheerful—especially those at house-keeping with their families—-and perhaps for a oomiuonplace reason. The plague of servants is comparatively a mild malady 011 the Continent, and our friends seem to be able to command such service as they want. Probably the democratic spirit that has done so much to unsettle

European society and break up the old feudal ties between masters and servants has thus far helped our American families abroad,by transferring to their bands and ready pay the "services that used to wait mainly u|on titled personages.— Money with moderate refinement is now becoming aristocratic, and servants are to be had iu Euro|e for fair pay. Ladies have told me that words cannot exaggernte the comforts of having servants who are thoroughly trained to their work and disjwsed to do it well, and with a wholesome sense of the fact that others are ready to till their places. Here in America it is not so, and sometimes seven dinners in one week are spoiled by as many cooks, in turn, who agroc as much in exorbitant demands for wages as they difl'er in the rare variety of their waste and wickedness. French people, indeed, complain of the present race of mercenary servants, and of the decline of the old feudal reverenee, very much as our Southern neighbors complain of their changed household service. They say that it is not safe for the parlor to listen to what is said in the kitchen, and that there is always discontent with wages, and sharp criticism of the manners and temper of the household dignities. Hut they also say that some of the old nuisances haye vanished that the rougish valet and the intriguing lady's maid have ceased to be characters of French society, and their places have been taken by low romantic and leas dangerous servitors.

It has been, and is new, apparently the aim of some American women to go abroad to find husbands, either for them selves or their daughters, so that the whole subject has assumed serious importance, and probably at this very hour there are scores, perhaps hundreds, of American girls abroad who are thinking of the matter tor themselves, with an eye to a direct applicant for their hand. We know very well that good matehes are sometimes made there, and that Hermans, and even

Frenchmen and Italians, have made good husbands ou^j daughters. But the chances and the id apt t4 There is a idea of thi the two wo! cldg, cannot expecttO loravi serted equalitjr'to h'rni that-prevails in out own ^.Tnerican me^. In ope respect there is generally no mincing the matter on the part of the Europeon lover. He goes at once to business, and before he makes lo^e to the daughter he patn the matter of money to the father, and finds oat precisely what he may expect. This is not a charming aspect of tne relation to our American vision for we take it for granted that a man ought to marry mainly for love, while we do not object to having a little money thrown into the bargain, if-jt happens to be convenient, \Ve have what we.call the American system on this subject, and it is the best system with all due wisdom in carrying it out.

Tbe BeopoiiRibilltiM of ttae Liver. The liver has a very important part to per form in the animal economy. Its function is twofold. Xh&Huid which it secretes tempers the blood and regulates the bowels, and upon tho quantity arid1 tjuality of ttao secretion depends, in a great degree, the adaptation of the blood to the requirements of the system and the due removal of the refuse matter which remains in tho intestines after the work of digestion has been accomplished.

One of the principal uses of Hostetter Stomach Bitters is to tone and control this somewhat unruly organ. The antibilious properties of tho preparation are sparcoly secondary to its virtues as a stomachic. Its operation upon tho liver is not violent like that of mercury, but gradual and gentle.
