Courting.

Of all the funny things beneath the sun, this courting is the funniest. There are so raathy different kind* of it, and so many way/of doing it, that we scarcely know where to begin to unravel its mysteries. The wild Arab courts npon his fiying steed, and pursuing fast his fleeting bride, o'er many a desert mile his chase may last but once his courtship past, hi* wife becomes his slave, and lie alone is brave in his own opinion. We fear we have many in our midst vrtio are Arabs in principle, who pursue the object of their imaginary affection, until from sheer exhaustion the maiden yields, only to become the slave of her former adorer. The methods of courting are varied, ahd differ as much as do the actor of the play. The bashful lovers are perfectly content lo pais away their hours of courtship by gazing sweetly at each other, each occupying a distant corner of the room, or opposite "ides of the hearth,if the weather requires a lire. The second grade of courtship is where the parties have become old enough to sit side by side, each on their own chair but the "boldest courtship is where the twain are both content to occupy the same chair. This kind of courtship will almost invariably wind up with something. Courtship is often sittended with difficulties. Sometimes the maiden does not fancy him who would become her lover, and he is compelled to make tracks for home much earlier than lie had anticipated. Sometimes when the sweet charmer is really willing the old folks presist in sitting np and talking io an unreasonably late hour, or, what is worse, inviting the girls to retire, which is not always done in good order at least such is our experience, and, as far .as we can ascertain, that of many others, Sometimes, too, the girl will try to do the courting herself and we regret to say, that in this case, like all other cases where the fair sex attempt to take the place we should occupy, the thing^ becomes a failure.

Aii Affecting Scene.

From the ChicagaTribune, March 27.J At the conclusion of the regular services at the Church of the Messiah, fyesterday afternoon, Rev. Robert Laird Collier addressed his congregation, saying, in substance, that on this (Monday) evening would occur the annual sale ol pews, and a new year in the history of the church would- begin. This, then, was the proper occasion for hini to announce to his brethren that he had under consideration a "call" from the congregation of Unity Church, Boston, to take charge of that society. The call was a very pressing one, and, though he had not fully made up his mind to abandon his Chicago people, yet he was not ready to give a negative reply to his Boston friends. He then sat down, whereupon several members of the congregation arose and appealed to him, in eloquent terms, to .remain in Chicago. Halt' the congregation were in tears, and a more affecting scene is seldom witnessed. Mr. Collier could not resist this home thrust. Springing to his feet, he exclaimed that under no consideration would he leave Chicago his mind was made up, fully and irrevocably. He would live and die with them. And then there was "joy unconfined" in that congregation. The people could scarcely contain themselves where sadness had but a moment before reigned supreme, there was now sunshine and happiness. Tears of disappointment and anguish gave way to tears of joy and good will.

Mr. Collier pronounced the benedic tion, and then such hand-shaking and congratulations followed as to convince him that he had not made a mistake in concluding to remain at the hend of the Church of the Messiah.

Tho Advantages of having a Literary Wife. I attend my wife to soirees and converzationea as humble companion, and am introduced as the husband of Mrs. Hearl. Coming home from town in the cars, some officious fellow with whom I fell into conversation volunteers to show me the yilla of the distinguished poetess, and perhaps adds, "They do say her husband is a surly curmudgeon, with no appreciation of her genius." If I venture to take a morning saunter among my shrubberies, I shall probably find some audicious tourist taking photographic views or gratuitously trimming my hedges. Ten to one, 1 shall next stumble on a newspaper reporter, who will take care to have me inventoried, in liis next issue, among the fountain®, alcoves, and other properties of the poetess. Only the other day, our butcher's bill was'feloniously purloined from the table by some mementohunter. It would not surprise me to see it produced to answer the question (only changing the gender), "Upon what meat doth this our Cwsarfeed,

That he is grown so great?" The expressman leaves boxes of aromatic Frances Augusta Soap" and genuine "Searl Baking Powder," with compliments of the enterprising donors, collecting enormous fees therefor ami every day the mail-carrier makes a "'general delivery'' at our door. Presentation copies, in "gilt and bine" and patrician bronze, of trashy books, usurp my library shelves, till wellthumbed Iiaak Walton and Sir Thomas Browne are thrust into an ignoble comer.

We receive frequent deputations from the "Tallow Dip Mite Association," the "Porringer Aiu Society," and other worthy charities, each soliciting mv wife to. head its list of lady patronesses, and overwhelm its rival with merited confusion but I am happy to say she has not vet undertaken the role of philanthropist. When that dav comes I shall sit, like the meek Jellvbv," with my head against the wall if indeed the momentum of her reputation does not crush me out of l.fe altogether.—Lippincotfs Magazine.

If a woman wishes to be a^ general vorite with her female acquaintances jshe has onlv to permit thent to ontdress lier. The more intent they are upon gewgaw? and decorations, the more proloiind wul lie the raspect for her that totally disregards them. Let anv one look among his or her friends and see if she who is moat beloved is not one of less pretension to fancv than those around her.

SPECIAL NOTICE*. The RespeiunilltlM mf the Uver. The liver has a very important part to per form in the animal economy. Its function is two-fold. The fluid which it secretes tempers the blood and regulates the bowels, and upon the quantity and quality of the secretion depends, in a great degree, the adaptation of the blood to the requirements of the system and the due removal of the refuse matter which remains in the intestines after the work of digestion has been accomplished.

One of the principal uses of Hostetter Stomach Bitters is to tone and control this somewhat unruly organ. The antibilious pro-

Sary

erties of the preparation are scarcely seconto its virtues as a stomachic, Its operation upon the liver is not violent like that of mercury, but gradual and gentle. Instead of creating a sudden tumult in that sensitive gland, it regulates its action by degrees.— Hence, it is a SAFE remedy for biliousdisorders, while mercury, being a tremendous excitant, is not. The more naturally and quietly a diseased organ can be restored to its normal condition the better, and it is the peculiar property of this harmless vegetable alterative to reinforce and regulate without excit^orsuccess

con raising. ...... le which has attended its use as a remedy for affections of the liver is proverbial. Persons of a bilious habit who take it habitually as a protection against the attacks to which they are constitutionally liable, pronounce it the best liver tonic in existence. The symptoms of an approaching lit of biliousness can hardly be mistaken. A pain in the right side ornnder the shoulder blades, a saffron tinge in the whites of the eyes. sick headache, a feeling of drowsiness, low spirits, loss of appetite, constipation and general debility are among the usual indications of a morbid condition of the liver, and as soon as they appear the Bitters should be resorted to in order to ward off more serious consequences. dwlw

BRANDRETH'S PILLS. Their great value consists in this: They may be used ?o long as any disease affects any of the organs of the body and by thus persevpring in their use tho disease will be cured, and the body restored to health, free from every taint and impurity. Theirrepntation proves their merit,

Thomas Smith, Coroner and Justice of the Poace, Hastings-on-the-Hudson, says Brandroth's Pills cured him of Dyspepsia and Heartburn, when every other medioine had failed to relieve him, Certificate dated April 2,1868.

Dr. Turner, of Savannah, Ga., says he has, for nearly forty years, recommened Brandreth's Pills us a specific in Yellow Fever that he never knew a patient to die who took them"for this malady, being otherwise sound. Their prompt use takes out of the body thbae matters whieh feed the fatality of the disease. As general family medicine he considers them far in advance of all others, and here he speaks from personal experience of their qualities. mar9-dwlm.
