to di AmAledb Jife-Hverage temperance lecture with a feeling very nearly* «tk|ii,i* C?n^i«pti.-{ ^mpng the causes which produce this feeling is the unquestionable fact that but very iew who attempt to instruct and arouse the people upon this-subject have any adequate conception of what intemperiuice is or what is its remedy. They are, too frequently, persons of narrow minds and stilt narrower experiences, who almost invariably misapprehend the cause and. nature of the disease shfey ^propose to treat.* It is therefore, with profohnded: pleasure that we publish such staUmehts as the folin ^PAiADELWiiA, March Tl^ Academy of Music wis crowded this evening on the occasion of the twenty-fifty anniversary of the Friendship Division, 8ons,of Temperance. Among the prominent persons present were Vice-President Colfax, Governor Geary, O. Q. Howard, and Rev. Dr. Newman. The exercises included addressed by Col far, Howard and Geary.
ME. Colfax was. received with loud cheers, and spoke nearly an hour. He stated this was the twenty-fifth anniversary of his connection with l«ie temper-ance-movement. During that time he had kept the pledge faithfully to-the letter. Restated this was the twenty-fifth anniversary of his connection with the te«uperance^ir&vement. /He drew a thrilling .picture of the evils of intemperance referred to the sorrow of every family in the land by the war, declared that during the last decade more liyfis-had beep, lost by intemperance than were loit by war, or disease contracted therein Colfax was frequently interrupted by applause, as were the other speakers^ During his remarks, when he referred to General Howard, the whole audience rose and eheered loudly.
When our public men of large minds and ripe experience, full of charily for the unfortunate, and cognizant of the fact that the whisky seller has a soul to save as well as the rest of mankind, come forr ward attd advocate personal temperance^ we havegreitt hopes that the needed rcform isdiearer a realization than eve? before.
Mr. Colfax is a conspicuous example of the liberal and practical temperence man. Twenty-five years ago he vowed in the presence'of a young and brilliant friend who was dying with dcltrium tremens, that he would take a siirfe insurance against duch a fate himself, by subscribing to the total abstinence pledged That pledge he has religiously kept. How pure has been his life, how noble his aims, how splendid his silccess! None but those who have an intimate acquaintance with the peculiar temptations of Sublic life in Washington City can iinerstand how.m^ch resoluti9n it( requires to escaj^ tftiih the liumerotis receptions and parties and private caucuses incident to Capital life without drinking at least a glass.pf wine. Yet Mr. Colfax has passfed, thus far.thlroughhi» remarkable politcal career of twenty years, including the most exciting canvasses among the people, as well as the most stormy period of American historywithout drinking a drop of intoxicating spirits. How healthy, morally and physically! How-hap-py his family! How honored hie' name! As the years of his abstinence have .sped by how many grand intellects- and noble physiqnes has he seen shattered? A dozen instances come to our mind at once. More than one member of the body over which he presides has dropped away into a sad grave, or a still'sadaer life' within the last twenty years. We never think of the Senate Chamber without bringing to mind the fine face and prematurely grey hair ofMcDougall,ofCalifornia. He was in many respects, almost peerless. When we last saw him, ithe spoiler's hand was upon him. His face flushed with more than the excitement of debate his eye gashed with more than the fire of genius his form bowed with more than the weight of Senatorial cared. He was the hopeless victim of intemperance! In a few short months'his career ended under the saddest and somberest of circumstances. Through the streets of Albany, along which, thirty years ago, his youthful footsteps had fallen, a few faithful friends followed him to a drunkardV grave. We think now, also, of another former United States Senator, who was almost the peer of Douglas fn debate, said, to-day, to be a pitiful, seedy, tottering inebriate dependant on charity for nearly eyery drop of the lethe in which he struggles to drown his memories. Indeed, it is not necessary that we should go among dead or exSenators to find examples of public men with which to contrast the sobriety of the Vice-President. Each 4av that he presides ovdr the Seriate, fcis'pye falls unon at least one who is never sober.. How many around him are as sober as- he? How many are incipiently 'intoxicated? If we extend the hofizon of our ylsiou so as fo brin# within its limits the vast sea of humanity upon Which so many thousand soul-wreeltsfr are',floating! going down, we can easily understand why a great and good pant even though the second officer of the nation, does not think it derogatory to his dignity to make a temperance ,spe0pfe. We thank him for his brave, roanlv words sti)J more do we thank him for his eloqnertt gx^fjjple. Indiana grows prouder of hint each day. May his efforts in ttehalf of temperance be crowned with the unutterable glory of preventing many from becoming drunkards, and of rescuing more from, the clutches of the demon that is destroying their homes, their bodies, and tlieir souls!—Lafayette Journal. -*rt" .it. it-ijlilAtl mm* ."iMt'VjS:
