anything like a pleasant evening we are confident there will be a large audience at Beach's Hall this evening, when the Independent Club will, by urgent request, repeat the concert of last Saturday evening. The refreshments will be omitted, and the audience treated to ft purely musical feast. The admission is only fifty cents.

The 400 horse-power engine of the Vigo Iron Company's Works is being set up. 'And this reminds us of a story told by Mr. Crawford, President of the Com puny. When he was putting up a simi lar engine at New Castle, Pennsylvania, a countryman called on him, one day, and wanted to make a contract to supply hay and grainj for the 400 horses that were to run the engine.

Westated, some days ago, that Hiram Sandford, Esq., President of the Paris and Danville Railroad Company, had negoti ated a contract for the construction of this line. This road is to extend from Dan ville to Paris, Illinois, thirty-six miles in length, and to connect the Chicago and Danville, and Indianapolis and St. Louis roads at Paris. The contractors are Messrs. Judson, Terry and Young. The following is the basis of the contract, as we understand: the contractors are to fur nish tlio means to bnild and equip the road and are to own it they are to receive, as a gift, the bonus of five thousand dollars per/nile, which has been voted to the company by the counties of Edgar and Vermillion, making $180,000. This Jorews is to be guaranteed by individual security and to be payable, in-cash, one-half as the work is completed through each township and the balance in one year after the whole work is finished. The construction of the road is to commence as soon as the iron is laid from Chicago to Danville, by the company building that road, and is to be completed in eighteen months thereafter.

Wright claims that he won the amount from Winchell at a game of cards, and that Winchell wrote the check.

strong cvidenco of forgery,

however, is that, under date of Feb. 17th, Mr. Wincliell's name is cut from the National House register, and in Wright's r&om was found scraps of paper similar to that on which the check was written.— Wright was arrested at a saloon near the Palmer House. On his person was found $523, together with several counterfeit bills. Wright has been about the city, off and on, for some six months. He y'v* came from Springfield, Ohio, and in com••x pany with Winchell was talking of purchasing the Eaglo foundry. It is stated jgeis that on last evening he was to marry a young lady of Tndiannpolip, formerly of this city.

kil

The Independent Club having about recovered from the scathing criticism of the eminently classical "A. P." propose to-night to give another "Protacnade" Concert in Beach's HalL Being some" what excited they made up their minds to "wade in" regardless of comequences! The "violin" and ."flute" are determined to "venture" again upon their fate, "practice" or no practice... The Choruses hfcve got their, backs up Mid Ate bound to "render" th^iselvea, 'and havfe deter mined to be *4unif6rmH-'and "Blended," and "distinct," and "trilled!" be the consequences pathetic 6r otherwise. The "Plus ultra" is getting spunky ftnd means to be more plus ultra to-night.

All the Club s$t up a good part of last night learning from "A. P." "how to take breath," and the audience may rest assured that a good deal will be taken!

The "Trio" ts going to be "rendered as well as was expected" (and better). "So prano," "Alto," and "Tenor" are becoming very satisfactorily "harmonized", and "chest voice" is going at premium to night—"medium" nowhere. :h'ZU*.i'-

Anew and fresh supply of "even tones" has just been laid in, and will be* used promiscuously. The "Poor Wanderer" is going to fare "worser" than everj be cause the "Anima" lacking at the last rendering has just arrived!

The "foundation" which the "Basso profundo" had incontinently kicked away, has been brought back, no! very much damagixlv -jn

By means of an ordinary chemical operation the club have succeeded in obtaining a "cleaner" pianist than ever, and head, hands, arms, body and feet will all "come into play."

N. B—The "lond pedal" will be dropped at exactly the right time, with, it is hoped, an astonishing effect.

The distinguished, alas! that we must now write, the "extinguished" "leader" is rapidly becoming "more competent," and having spent three hours with "A. P." in learning how to handle his "baton," will now, probably, be able to wave it in a manner that will bring down the house.

The "deportment" of the club has also been remodled,^and will be found to be just the thing.

The truth is, the club's dander is up and the audience may look out for a storm to-night. Let "A. P." stand from under!

Dr. Young reported that no new cases had occurred. The word No was accidentally omitted in the report. v. ftt

The Promenade Concert

or last

Saturday Evening.—Justice, coupled with sentiments of gOod will and friendship, leads me to say, that I was pleased and highly entertained with the performance of the Independent Club at Beach's Hall on Saturday evening last. In com mon with many others, I doubt not, 1 regretted that so few wer4 favored with a truly refined and unexceptionable per formance of instrumental and vocal music. Being incompetent to judge or indulge in criticism of how perfectly or imperfectly each one performed his or her part of the programme or how near the Whole performance approached the ideal of excellence, yet I hesitate not to say, that it was practically good, and well worth the time and money of going to hear.

After reading the criticism. of one "A P." in this morning's Express, wherein he assumes to say, that all the defects of which he complains, might have been avoided, "if the leader would be a competent musician," I am almost prompted to call such a critic, a real ass, a "dolt." He certainly had some affection either of the liver or heart, and it would be advisable before he attends another peiform ance of the Independent Club, that he drink most boitntijully of that pure life giving water-charity, which remove all perverseness from the head, and of that other pure and unadulterated water, found at the Rose well, which is a sure cure for liver complaint. 7iJtS

For one I hope that neat and magnificent Hall of the "Beach," will be filled on Thursday evening to hear for themselves, some grand and rare music for Terre Haute. If one can not enjoy the music, he certainly will be able to appreciate the really comfortable, and neatly executed seats, which one finds in that Hall. Pique,
