Printing taCilifotnian. Ajevitew of the'progress 6f the printing business in California is given by the San Francisco
Bulletin.
At the time of
the gold discovery in 1848 but one small newspaper was published in California^ the editor of fhich was hf& own printer. In tlie winter of 1849-60 three daily newspapers and three job-printing offices, employed about foYty printers at wages of $50 a week each, were established in San Francisco. In the spring and sum mer of 1850 daily journals began to spring up over the State, and the journeymen printers put up wages to sixty dollars a week, and then to two dollars per 1,000 ems, which rates ruled generally until 1856, when they jvere fixed at seventyfive cents per 1,000 for piece Work and filly dollars per week for day work, which rates have been maintained to the present time.
Six dailies, two semi-weeklies, thTee tri-weeklies, twenty-eight weeklies and monthlies and one bi-monthly are now published in San Francisco, giving employment to about 400 printers. There are thirty-four book and job printing establishments, eleven of them using steam-power in their jfressrooms. Tlie total labor bill for one ofthe most extensive job offices amounts to $45,000 gold pen annum (only gold rates are given in this article), and at least two newspapers are paying printers «t the rate of $55,000 each year.
A Brave Woman.
The Portland
Argun
gives some facts
relative to the suffering that attended the disaster to the schooner Emily Hillard, Capt. Trimbuls. "In a passage from Bangor to New York this vessel was blown off, and after a long and desperate contest with storm and billow miccedeed in getting into Nassau. The The captain's wife was on board, and proved herself a heroine. She took her turn at the pumps regularly, and once, when the worn-out seamen declared they would pump no longer, she took an ax and threatened instant death to the first man who left his station. She carried her point, and the vessel and lives were thereby saved. The provisions ran short and were finally exhausted, and thev were six days without a morsel ol fooa. They had decided to draw lots to see which one should die by his own hand for the others to eat, when a. {adorable wjpd came, and the vessel the hext day reach* ed Nassau. They were in a_terrible conditio from, their long suffering,,afljl jr#re reduced almost to skeletons."
Fearful Treatment of a DrnnkenW*c, An iron mask for the. cure of a drunken wife is ationg the latest novelties in England. In Jersey* last month, one Le Roy, a watchmaker, was arrested, on charge of cruel treatment df his wife, and a mask with which he had covered her fecav.rwM ,- ducod in oorirt. It consisted oftwd iron' rings a quarterofan ineh thiBk'J attaiclf^ to each other by vertical bapi. of^atrong hoop iron, each an inch widk Otte of the rings was about nine inches in diameter, and the other six inches, the smaller part resting upon the Bhoulderswhenthe instrument was plaoed. in! pdsi&Qt). Tne bars were about iwiiuiiches Apart,' and'to prevent the wearer getting anything to her mouth, a piece of iron was placed across two of the bars in firont. It. weighed two, pounds. It turned out, however, that tl)e woman was able to reverse the ifi&sk and drink a glass of spirits. The mask opened with a hinge in front, and was fastened behind with a padlock. The. husband was fined 10s for the assatilt on his wife. The mask remains in the possession of the police.
BURLINQAME was on tlie point of
returning to the United States When the mission, in the performance of whiSh lie ably acted until the day of his death, was unexpectedly tendered him by the Prince Kung, and accepted by him after consultation with his colleagues. It is related, that "Princo Kung came in solemn state to the United States Legation, and presented the Imperial decree, which bears date Nov. 26, 1867, and is written on heavy yellow parchment, wrapped in yellow brocade satin, the Imperial color, and encased inn yellow box. He lias given him the title of Embassador, and clothed him with the most ample powers." He however preferred thei title of Envoy, and was accordingly eommissioned Envoy Extraordinary and Ministor Plenipotentiary, or in Chinese, Poo-an-chew (Burlingame, Anson), Chin-chi-choong-jen-tachen (Minister of Heavy Responsibilities).
