Meredith, of Ter

ie Haute, called on us yestorday. Mere ilith is a monomaniac on the coal question —peculiarly susceptible to cannel coal. Tnd. Journal.

The Postmaster General has establish' ed a Postoffice at Knightsville, Clay county, on the line of the T. II. & I. R# K., and has appointed Daniel H. Davis Postmaster.

Concert.—The public schools are preparing a concert and exhibition at Dowl ing Hall, on Friday evening next. About five hundred children will take part in the

Groceries.—We direct attention to die advertisement of W. F. Briscoe, who lias opened a new and well selected stock of family groceries in the new building on Ohio street, near Third street.

John Wharton, Minister of the Gos pel, died in this city, yesterday morning, al the residence of liis brother,

Those Receits.—We liear a report that officers are going through the coun try examining receipt books, bills, etc. to see if the proper revenue stamp is attached. If not, a fine is imposed upon the holder of the paper, who, perhaps through neglect, hnB omitted to have the paper stamped. Business men would do well, therefore, to examine their papers, in order that they may not get into trouble.

Savings Bank.—About three hundred depositors' names are now on the books of the Tcrre Haute Savings Bank. The -money thus far deposited has all been to and on unquestionable security and the daily deposits are steadily increasing.

As the people more fully understand the positive security of this bank, they have more and more confidence in it. It is eminently the people's bank, organised for their benefit, and maintained for their convenience and forfeit. We .look forward to no distant day, when it will have the longest general line of permanent deposits, of any banking institution in the

city.

And why should it not have? The deposits are certainly as well secured, and -the profits to those depositing their money there, must certainly be greater than at any other bank. All the expenses of the bank are conducted on the most economical plan, and the gentlemen having charge of the same, represent an aggregate capital of near one million dollars. It is perhaps unnecessary for ns further to recommend this institution to public favor, for its increasing patronage already tells how rapidly it is gaining in p»Wic f'i confidence.

other New fBfU§ds/ ifl$ii,the prefc ani will be published in a nwidsjn by T. B. Peterson & Brothers, Philadelfflbia.— "Haas Breitmann's Party" has already a great and flattering sale, and this volume will no doubt create a greater sensation and be more eagerly sought after. It will published in one volumoji on the finrat tinted plate paper, and sold by all book-sellers at Seventy-five cents a copy, or copies of it will be sent to any one, [at once, to any place, post paid, on receipt pf its price by the publishers.

Emebson's Minstrels.—Thisexcellent troupe of ebony-hued professionals gave a splendid performance last evening. While the company isWell made np, still Billy Smereon looms up above the^a all, and in his peculiar line of delineations we believe he has no equal. On last evening ho fairly ran riot in wit, fun, farce and fancy, and shuffled off the grotesque steps and outre figures in a manner that tickled the diaphragm into extatic mirth It seemed as if there would never be any let up to the encores. To-night he appears with the company in a change of programme. Seats may be secured at B, Q. Cox & Co's.

Cankei Coal.—We learn that

i:a

Masquerade.—As we write the Mas querade of the Maennerclior is in full blast. The floor of Beach's elegant hall is filled with gay dancers, moving in measured steps to the entrancing strains of Toute's band. There is the usual com mingling of prince and peasant, clown and monk, sunny haired Caucassian and sooty African, bombastic wairior artll meek eyed nun, all mixed together in such apparently inextricable confusion that, with the brief time we enjoyed the scene, we shall not attempt to huliviciual ize the personations. It was a happy scene. Everybody was happy and seemed desirous of makinghis neighbor so. This after all, is the triie secret of social enjoy ment, and in this we Americans have much to learn of our German friends.

At the pidnight hour masks were re moved, and then great was the hilarity over "the establishment of identities. fine supper was served, and then the dance went on until near morning, nothing whatever occurring .to mar the pleasures of the occasion.
