The Promenade Concert.—The terribly Wot rain storm of Saturday evening was a "datupener" upon the Promenade Conceit of the Independent Club, and although it was conccded a musical success, we are sorry to say it was not a success, financially. It could hardly be expected that any person, especially ladies, would leave the comforts of the fireside on such a night, nevertheless, there was a respectable audience present, and all seemed amply repaid in the rich musical treat presented in the following programme:. ••'i FART FIRST. 1 Overture-—C. We should be pleased to speak in detail of the rendition of the well selected programme, but in so doing we wouldbe compelled, in justice to all who look part, to measure out about the same amount of praise and the same number of words to each, and therefore will only echo the opinion of the critical audience in saying that it was all good. This was proclaimed by tho enthusiastic applause which greeted every number upon the programme.

At the close of the first and second parts refreshments were served in the room adjoining the Hall. It v.:u contemplated to charge for the refreshments, after the manner of festivals, but the ladies bf the Club, in gratitude to those who had braved the storm to put in an attendance, generolisly spread out the good good things "without money and without price."

Taking ill aH was a ploasing cutertainnient -so much so that a general request was made Tor a repel 1 lion was of theeoucert, which will be done, with some changes in the programme, on Thursday evening next, when we hope the Club may have such an attendance as may encourage tho members in a series of tlieso promenade, or parlor concerts, while at the same tiino a taste will be cultivated foe the ,higlior, lusic.

on the 13th of January, 1870, in Hadeton, Clay county, it was unanimously resolvedthat the capital stock of Baid €!onipany be reduced from $600,000 to $550,000. —t

The Haymaker's.—The Independent Club has been urgently solicited to repeat the Cantata of the Haymakers, and will probably do so shortly after the Lenten season. This cantata was rendered at St. Louis on four evenings of last week, the audiences increasing in size each succe3

,pyi|^ The Journal of Saturday .took o^^tlbna1loathe action of the CooMnissionere in the matter. The facts are these: Stevens was indicted for murder The ^County Board conceived that the Prosecuting Attorney was not competent to manage the case, and employed Co Thompson to prosecute Sevens, .wluch lie did ably, and secured a conviction with the death penalty. This judgment was reversed by the Supreme Court, and very many persons in the community now believe that a second trial will only result in a sentence of imprisonment for life, while a great many other citizen* aie entirely opposed to capital punishment Under these circumstances the County Commissioners, as they believed for the best interests of the county, i.vst.uctecl their attorney, as they had st right, to let a plea of guilty be entered of murder the second degree and upon which Sle vens would, without any more cost to the county, be sent for life. It was with great difficulty, we understand, that Stevens could be induced to do this, but lie finally agreed to it, under protest, and was ready to enter his plea, when the Prase cuting Attorney conceiving that he could hang Stevfens, refused to let the arrangement be carried out. Another trial, in. eluding the keeping of Stevens, will cost the county a thousand dollars, with very strong probabilities that the icsult wil® be the same as proposed in the arrange ment, with a chance that he may be acquitted. We think the Commissioners acted for the good of the county and believe our readers will agree with us.
