T1IE WOMAN QUESTION.
"Personal Liberty" and the Marriage el at on "TS*'
A
I"''
From Domorest Monthly.] I have lived in different countries and in the varied relations commonly sustained by women, for half.the allotted years accorded to the life of man, and I havo never yet found one that gave •me personafliberty. On the contrary, the relations which increased my happiness increased my duties aud my responsibilities, so as to leave personal freedom out of the question yet I rejpiced in th^m, and accepted them, and would not have exchanged them for freedom, which can onlv exist- in isolation. The truth at which I am endeavoring to arrive is simply this: that duty is about all we have to do with in this world, and that, if done right, will very readily take care of itself. But when some peeple do not perform their duty, what is to be done then? Why, we can at least go on perform ours. Two wrongs nover made a right, and their short-comings can not excuse wrong-doing on our part. The moral contlct is occasioned by the substitution of individual rights for individual duties. The assertion of rights arms, individuals against each other, while the recognition of duties draws them nearer together. The individual sovereignty and woman-rights theory is responsible for all the sophistries of the modern freejdivorce and anti-mar-riage speculations, and not only for the misery which these ideas have introduced among families, but for the disruption which is threatened tq th^,"«itire family relation—tliaf one divine institution which is stamped with the siajn manual of God himself—which no
neglect or dis
regard of its sacred obligations can utterly pervert or destroy—which lives consecrated in the hearts of all good men and women as the highest form of social life which humanity has yet known. The union of the sexes upou some basis or other is natural and inevitable. Marriage is the only one which we know of that meets the exigencies of the case, and its honor, its safety, and its happiness arc all founded in its permanence and-in the sense of obligation and responsibility which attaches to it. The possibilities of marriage, its perfection where the conditions are in harmony with each other, have never yet been fully realized, and the still greater mistake has been made of supposing that mere change would cure those evils which result from the radical defeots in individual organization.
There arc, undoubtedly, persons whose Influence and atmosphere aggravates and stimulates our natural tendencies to evil, and it is doubly unfortunate if we find ourselves allied to-such persons by marriage but, in nineteen cases out of twenty, where this occurs it is our own fault—it is because' marriage has become, with some women a profession, a business bv whioh a livelihood was to be obtained, that any ohance'is seized which offers itgel f, anil thus great mistakes are made, the consequences of which must be borne. But, asks the questioner, "Are the conse
5orever?"
[uences, of„ such, a mistake to be borne There is^no help for it the consequenoesTdf a: mistake must be borne as long as they last by some one or other, and it is one of th^ esidences of the shallowness of the individual rights doctrine, .that we are ^o ^dependent- upon each other, our interests are so olo3ely interwoven with those of others, that the consequences of otir misfoke^ o&h t»6t be confined to ourselves, but must be .home bv others, and that this enlargement of their responsibilities is generally in .proportion to the strength of their sympathy and the greatness of their humanity. Marriage was not instituted for Ihe benefit of individuals alone. Its great object was to found the family, ana the moment Us qb-

"Why can not I lite my own life?— Why can I not do something outside-of these narrow limits?" is the constant cry of her soul." Her first duty—the divine object for which marriage was in stituted—is forgotten of unrealized, because it has never been* placed. Before her as a motive, and her partner i.^ as ignorant and innocent of any actuating principle in the conduct of her married life as she is herself. His objections to her expressed desires atod wishes are all arbitral ry and egotistical," There is now kind and impartial examination of the facts in the case, presentation of the arguments against it, or cheerfully yielding to what seems the best and wisest thing to cjo but there is assertion a..d dictation which arouses antagonism and stimulates the bringing together of an array of forces to meet them and thus the contest begins. Where it erfds the divorce courts snow. The "woman's movements" are good as weapons, but they belong to a state of warfare. They are the outgrowth of the appropriative, masterful and tyrannical spirit of men, and they will continue until justice, or at least has been done.
Sfoel I and her pot-of beer in a public house every evening that her husband did so, until he became so disgusted at the sight, that it induced him to break up his own habit. I have little faith in the moral power of women effecting any beneficient cluuige through suffrage, when'they obtain a vote because, in the exercise of the balr lot, intelligence counts for nothing It is an instrument more powerful in the hands of the ignorant and prejudiced mass than in the hands of the educated, thoughtful and tolerant few. women, Marriage in the future may be less universal, but it will be more perfect than it is now, because it will be entered into by both parties from the highest motives of duty and affection. Men and women who wish to "live their own lives," as the phrase is Will not marry, or will consent to, tliat partial justice, has been done, individual freedom. The doctrine of indissolubili'y in marriage would be better than the doctrine of free divorce, for it frould put the idea of duty and obligation in place of selfishness and the indulgence Of caprice and inclination. Duty is the noblest kind of inspiration. It is that Consent of our acts which separates us from animal life, "governed only by its lawless instincts.

IMPORTANT
The attention of Bardteare Dealers, Car and House Builders and tvners is respectfully invited to the PA TEXT SEVER FAILING SELF-LOCKIKO
"WINDOW FAST."
This is decidedly the best and most import ant invention of modern times. Its simplicity and wonderful adaption both for HOUSE and CAR WINDOWS is perfectly astonishim: accomplishing everything that can jmsrib be desired, and yet
being cheaper
than any
other window fiuit. For house windows it dispenses with weights and pullys. operating equally well on top and bottom sash, allowing either to be raised or lowered as much or little as wished to secure ventilation, and yet be I locked securely at every point, from the intruder or burglar, and will never get out of order. It has the peculiar clement of locking I itself in whatever position you leave it. For
Steam or horse car windows they are finished in a variety of styles, making an elegant finish to the ear windows, and the only arrangement ever introduced that can never fail.
The Hoase Fasts fbr sale hy all Hardware Dealers. Liberal-inducements to Agents.— Send for descriptive circulars and prices, te.
