We were amused as well as interested by the relation of the experience of a travelled friend on this head, and we will allow him to briefly tell his own story: "One day last Fall," he said, "in company with an eminent clergyman of Lon-

Suppose that I wore a stiff, high-crowned hat, round-toed boots, mutton-chop whiskers, and had a (ace as chubby and red as any in Britain—would you be able to know me for an American then?' 'Certainly I should, as soon as I heard you speak,' the fellow triumphantly answered. 'You Americans invariably begin every sentence with a

"My English friend laughed long and loud at the man's adroitness. 'I believe he is more than half right,' he said. 'See if your nationality is not detected everywhere you go.' "It was even so. In Paris I was im-

So it seems that the individual American is known all over the world, and with good reason. His country and its institutions are the world's admiration, and it is not unaccountably strange that the evidences of his proud birthright should accompany him about the world.—Pack

SOB Inadvertently Kills hi9Father. Mr. Alexes Droit, formerly of St. Louis, lately residing in Illinois, live iqiles from East St. Louis, on the blufis on the Columbia road, was on last Thursday accidentally shot dead by his own son, a youth of sixteen years. Seeing some ducks in the lake, the lad picked up his gun, asked his father if it was loaded, and the same instant raised with his thumb the hammer off the lock. Before the old man could answer, his boy's thumb slipped of the hammer, the gun was discharged, and the contents were lodged in the father's right side. The unfortunate man lingered in great agony till yesterday, when he expired. Th voung man has been in a phrenixed state, bordering on insanity^ since die occurrence, and the family are apprehensive that he will become derangm in consequence of this deplorable casualty.

This carricature has been carried to the last limit of absurdity both by American and foreign pens and pencils and authors so eminent as Dickens and Lever have deemed it quite the thing to swell the volume of ridicule heaped upon "the nni' versal Yankee nation." We believe this to be in the main unjust and uncalled for. We think that if the dress and deportment of the average American abroad could be measured by a fair cosmopolitan standard, they wonld ba found to compare favorably with those of the representatives of other nations.
