TIIE FEMALE BULLS AND BEARS.
Their Career in Chicago—How Miss Tennie. C. Claflin Didn't Cure a Female Patient.
The Chicago
Times
of the 15th, gives
the following account of the female firm of Wall street brokers, known to the commercial world an "Woodhull, Glaflin & Co." AH the ladies are well known in St Louiri, in connection with Col. James H, Blood, formerly City Auditor, and Presi dent of the Fifth street Horse Railroad Company, this statement of the
will be of interest to our readers: The latest sensation of that somewhat easily excited metropolis, New York, is a bona fide
erMiss
firm of female brokers, doing an
apparently thriving business on Broad street, under the name of Woodhull, Claflin & Co. From the time that these ladies commenced business, the local journals of that city have devoted certain por tior.s of their columns daily to descriptions of their office, actions, looks meth od of labor, as well as to a tedious amount of mysterious speculations as to who they are and what will be the result of t1-"-novel venture.
It is not of course to be supposed that Ne# York will contain such a darling pair of females wlio pould claim nativity or business training in that place, ahd.it is equally certain that they, like all other individuals of striking originality of enterprise, must have received their education iir Chicago—and such proves to^ be the case. If there is any persona living in New York or elsewhere, who is in doubt concerning the success of these ladies in their new sphere, a few reminesences of their doings in this city will serve to show that they ought to be eminently fitted for the trade of professional sharp-
fclaflin, the junior member of the
firm, came to the notice of the Chicago public about three years ago as "Miss Tennessee, Clairvoyant Doctress." Her rightful name is Tennessee Claflin, and she is a sister to Dr. Hebern, a celebrated cancer physician now residing in this city. She has modified her name a trifle since her appearance on 'Change, and has ingeniously contrived to give it a somewhat prettier sound and look, by calling herself "Tennie C." Claflin. She occupied an elegant marble front building at the corner of Randolph street and Wabash avenue, facing on the latter thoroughfare, and is well remembered by the amount of style which she assumed at home and upon the streets.
In the matter of getting herself up with elaborate toilets, for the benefit of corner loungers, it is generally admitted that* she was an unqualified success, but £u a minister to the necessities of the sick and injured, she has "not left
t'beliind
her
an especially remarkable reputation. Well authenticated instances are related of her medical experiences, or rather of the experiences of those who looked to her for assistance in the hour of suffering that almost cause it to be regretted that she did not turn professional broker here, instead of practicing as a spiritualistic physician. Several of these cases are of a nature that would have brought the maledictions of the entire community upon the head of the offender had she been a man, but which were probably looked upon as evidences of natural talent and' shrewdness in a female.
To endeavor to give any detailed notices of her doings in this respect would require altogether too much space, but there is one case |that is deserving of mention.
The wife of Mr. Edward Silver, residing at Lamont, was prostrasted with an incurable ease of softening of the spinal cord. Her husband was nearly distracted, and refused to believe that his wife could not be restored to health Again, although several leading physicians of this city, among them Dr. Dyas, 'had assured him that she could not live. The husband finally sent for Tennessee, or "Tennie C.," as she is now known, who informed him at once that she could effect a perfect «»ure without*any trouble, stating, however, that she must have her full fee paid down at the start. Mr. Silver had ex]ended nearly all of his funds in endeavoring to bring his wife to health through legitimate means, but lie had still a little property left. The doctress was well aware of this fact, for she pulled out a legal document, which she had previously prepared, making over the property to her. This he signed. In thirteen days his wife was dead. By the advice of friends he sought the aid of the law to recover hiB property, but before a decision was reached he had died broken-hearted.
This method of getting a huge fee in advance was "Miss Tennessee's" favorite dodge, and a large number of instances are known of those whom she has duped in this manner. One sick gentleman paid her $150 on condition of being enabled to travel in three weeks. He did travel, but in a hearse.
Miss Claflin became acquainted with her present partner, Mrs. Woodhull, in this city. The latter female was the wife of a shiftless fellow who knew a little of medicine and had an office on Clark street, where he attended to private diseases under the name of "Dr. La Croix." She finally left him and hung out her sign as an "electrical physician" on Wabash avenue, near Elaridge court. She is remembered as a very sharp female, although she tras never so much of an adventures as Claflin. The proclivity of birds of a feather to seek each other's company finally brought these women together, and a mutual regard and esteem were the evident result. They finally left Chicago, possibly for Chicago's good, and were next heard from in New York, as the managers of a hospital on St. John's street. But it seems that medicine has ccased to have charms for them, and that they have appeared as feminine brokers in a $7000 office on Broad street. im
In reply fb a challenge M. Veuillot lately replied: "My life belongs to Je-uis Christ, and he has none too many defend* CT8 just now.".
Cruel Pedagogues.
From the Albany Argus.] There must be many heartless wretches among the school teachers along the river counties, if we can believe the newrpaper accounts of their ferocious conduct. One of the teachers in Kingston, Ulster county, punished a little girl, who had matches in school, by burning one of them under thejchild's nose, nearly causing strangulation whileja Poughkeepsie master obliged a student to run around the school room four hundred times—whole distance, five miles. The scholar went home at night and hasn't been out of the house since, His punishment was'for delinquency.
Ever so long ago, when we were little boys, the teachers were kindly di*positioned, and, as a consequence, their scholars never cut up any very mischievous pranks. The hardest punishment was when Old master Brown brought his fcrolo down.
His face was "angry antfrcd "Anthony Blair, go sit you there, .„•• ..... Among the girls," he said.'
So Anthony Blair, with a mortified air, And his head hung down on his breast, •. Went right away and sat all day
By the girl who loved him best.
Try
a little of our old master's preventive of mischief, and both scholars and self will be happier.

SPECIAL NOTICES.
A Torpid System.
Sometimes, without any assignable cause the physical strength and animal spirits give way, and a strange torpor falls on the body and intellect. There is little or no pain per haps, bnt the natural vigor and elasticity of the nervous and muscular system seems 'to havo departed, and an indifference to the pleasures of life, and even of its grave responsibilities, takes the place of that earnest in terestin both which characterizes every well balanced mind when in a healthy condition
This state of partial collapse is often the premonitory symptoms of some serious malady. It indicates unmistakably that the vital powers are languishing and need a stimulant In such cases tko effect of a few doses of Ilostettcr's Stomach Bitters is- wonderfully benoficial. The great tonic wakes up tEc system from its drowse. Tho secretions and tho circulation receive a new impetus. Tho relaxed nerves recover their elasticity under the operations"of the speeific, like the slackened strength of a musical instrument in the process of turning, Lethargy and liability aro rtplacod by energy and vigor, the spirits rise, and life that almost seemed a burden while the season of depression lasted, becomes once more enjoyable. That such a radical change should be produced by a remedy entirely devoid of the powerful alkaloids and minerals so extensively used in modern practice, may seem incredible to those who pin their faith on the medicinal efficacy of active poisons, but if thqse skeptics will take the trouble to enquire of those who havo tested the corrective and alterative virtues of the Bitters under the oircumstances describod, they will find the statement to bo true. 16-dwlw.
THIRTY I)EAI»i P0I80SS, according to tho "Journal of Commerco," aro sold in this market to change tho color of tho hair. The "Medical Gazette" says they aro 'worthless as dyes, and that their sale is a

The Throe Remedies. "SCHHSCK'S PULMONIC SYRUP" for tho euro of Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, and every form of-Copsumption. Tho peculiar action of this medicine ripens the ulcers in tho lungs, promotes the dischargo of tho corrupt matter by expectoration. Purifies the blood, and thus cures Consumption, when every othejr remedy fails. "Schenck's Sea-Weed Tonic for the cure of Dyspepsia or Indigestion, and all diseases arising from debility. This tonic invigorates tho digestive organs, supplies the placo of the gastric juice when that is deficient, and then enables the patient to digest the most nutritious.food. It is a sovereign remedy for all cases of indigestion. "Schenck's Mandrake Pills^ one of tho mostvaluablo medicinos over discovered^ being a vegetable substitute for calomel, and having all tho usofnl properties ascribed, to that mineral, without producing any of its injurious effects.
To these three medicines Dr. J. II. achenck of Philadelphia, owes his unrivaled succoss in the troatment of Pulmonie Consumption. Tho Pulmonic Syrup ripens the morbid mattor, discharges it, and purifies tho blood. The' Mandrako Pills act upon the liver, remove all obstructions therefrom, give the organ a healthy tono, and cure Livor Complaint, which is one of tho most prominent causes of Consumption.
The Sea Weed Tonic invigorates the powers of tiie stomach, and by strengthening the digestion and bringing it to a normal and healthy condition improves tho quality of tho blood, by which means the formation of ulcers or tubercles in the lungs becomes impossible. Tho combined action of these medicines, as thus explained, will cure evory case of Consumption, if tho remedies aro used in time and the use of them is persovered in sufficiently to bring the case to a favorable termination.
Dr. Schenck's Almanac, containing a full tcfifitiso on tho various forms of disease,_ his mode of treatment, and general directions how to use his medicines, can bo had gratis or sent by mail by addressing his Principal Office No. 15 N. Sixth street, Philadelphia, Pa.
