DEEP-SEA DREDGINO^w
The Wonders of the Deep—What Science Develops—Animal Life Fourteen Thousand Feet Below the Surface—Temperature of the Water.
From the Providence (R. I-) Journal 1 f- The enterprise of scientific minds is ohe of the distinguishing characteristics of the present age. We listen with breathless attention to the wonderful discoveries 'which Lockyer, Yapnsen, Secchi and a hiipt of other astronomers have made in spectrum analysis we are lost in a labyrinth of doubt over the ingenious theories by which Darwin builds np his tie velopment of vegetable and animal life we lire startled at the bold speculations I $ taLawi* of the geologists, by which they account -.(."n# for the condition of the earth by giving to it an existence of millions of ages and I E j.-vili nov. Dr. Carpenter and Prof. Thompson, with their dredging machine, have drawn INVENTIQN
from the depths of the sea specimens animal and vegetable life which laugh to ncorn all the most plausible theories of philosophers, and initiate the necessity of
entire change in the vievrs of geologists. Deep sea dredging has reached the dignity of a science, and interesting details of what it has accomplished have recent-
the Royal Geographical Society in don. Messrs. Thompson and Carpenter, on board her majesty's ship, the Porcupine have been diligently at work-between the months of May and September last, in sounding the depths of tho Atlantic bcean, and have brought
up
erns of the
fee^

from the deep cav
sea, specimens of
the myriads
of living creatures with which the ocean boM.om is covered. They have found seas so deep that many of the loftiest summits of the
Alps
might be buried
neath them. Dredges weighing with their deposits nearly half a ton, have beeri hauled up from the depth of
14,000
or two and two-thirds miles below thtBsurface. There are only three or fed!
mountain peaks in Europe which

to the
Very curious are the
facts brought to light by this revelation of the wonders of the deep, and very suggestive are the materials for thought which they give.
At one point, Mr. George Jeffers, who had
.scientificcharge
of the vessel,dredged
to the depth of fourteen thousand feet, and brought up a hundred weight and a half of mud from the bottom of the ocean. In these abysses, he says, there is an extraordinary abundance of animal life. Animals of much complexity of organization, and with eyes
as perfect in every
respect as those of the fishes and reptiles best kntfwn to us, have been brought to the surface.
A
great number of entirely
new specimens have been found. One haul brought up a small family of
suggests

members of a single form of ochinns. By a variety of ingenious contrivance*, men of science have been enabled to measure the temperature of the sea at depths, where the pressure is so enormous as to be equal to a weight of four hundred and thirty tons on everv square foot of surface.. No sunlight can Penetrate these depths, no air forces itself through such an interposing medium. Nothing is there but intense cold darkness unillumined by a ray of lig^tjan.a downward pressure of two'or threes-tons to the square inch. But recent sea dregdings have proved that unconceivable quantities of beings exist under a load of water above them nearly three miles in height, and that they have eyes which the ablest naturalists say are perfectly developed. Light of some kind must en'.cr the abysses to bring the visional organs into action. Sir Charles Lvell
that these sea home3,
"deep
in the wave," must be lighted by phosphorc.scenco^)ut the science of sea-dredg-ing is yet in its infancy, and we can only speculate and wonder.
Moreover, geologists have considered themselves safe in asserting that the various strata of the earth was formed at different times, and that each formation represented a period separated from ano:her by long intervals of time. But the
creatines

leave
the geologists to account for this strange anomaly which strikes at the root of their assumptions about geological time.
The varying temperature of the deep sea regions is a still more interesting subject. The method of oceanic circulation has long been a matter of controversy. Now it is ascertained that the depths of the equatorialjand tropical seas are colder than those of the North Atlantic. In the tropics the temperature is always below the freezing point, but in the deepest
is
to
found to
several degrees above
it.
This gives
the theory that the water of
equatorial and tropical seas must come from the Antarctic regions, although narrow currents may carry the Arctic waters to the tropics. The water under the equatorial regions must have traveled from the polar regions.

belonging to a condition of the earth which occurred millions of years ago.— Removing the dredges a few miles, the explorers find the sea depositing sa.ndstone debris, and in it are other creatures corresponding
.to
the sandstone fossils
which geologists have always referred to another epoch remote from us,' and divided by unmeasured eras from the former. And now wc find that at points of the sea-bottom only eight or ten miles apart, there is in progress a cretaceous deposit and a sandstone region, each with its own proper fauna.

degrees could be explained in no other way. Wp shall not enter into a discussion of the influence of the trade winds, or the force of the*galf-etream, but the facts which we have recorded certainly favor the theory recently advanced that lhe continual progress of evaporation going on in the equatorial regions leads to an indraught ofcold water in bottom currents from the polar seas.
These are all fac of great interest, materials for thought, as we have already said. We must wait patiently while

is at pa a a is of he premonitory symptoms of some serious malaI dy. It indicates unmistakably that the-vital powers are languishing and need a stimulant.
In such cases the, effect of a few doses of I Hogtetter's Stomach Bitters is, wonderfully beneficial. Tho great tonic wakes up the system from its drowse. The secretions and the circulation receive a new impetus. The relaxed nerves recover their elasticity under the operations of the specific, like the slackened strength of a musical instrument in the process of turning. Lethargy and debility are replaced by energy and vigor, the spirits rise, and life that almost seemed a burden while the season of depression lasted, becomes once more enjoyable. That such a radical change should be produced by a remedy entirely devoid of the powerful alkaloids and minerals so extensively used in modern practice, may seem incredible to those who pin their faith on the medioinal efficacy of active poisons, but if these skeptics will take the trouble to enquire of those who have tested the corrective and alterative virtues of the Bitters under the circumstances described, they will find the statement to be true. •16-dwlw.
TimtTY nF.APLY POISONS, according to the "Journal of Commerce,' are sold in this market to change the color of the hair. The "Medical Gazette" says they are worthless as dyes, and that their sale is a 'CBiiiit." The proprietors dare not submit them to chemical analysis.
Criatadoro's Excelsior Dye Ion the contrary, has been analyzed by Professor Chilton, the great analytical chemist, and pronuunced absolutely harmless, as well as efficicient. See his written certificate, at

They seem to accumulate electricity, and aid the circulation of tho blood through the part where applied, by which healthy actions are indueed.
