in the permanent nearnas.-? of the reading ^natter to the eye, connected with the bending forward of the heads. Alterations of light and shade are also injurious to the vision. Scholars"shut up.in semi-darkness find their eyes seriously affected for some minutes after coining into a strong light. This weakens the optic nerve, and reduces the length of vision. The light should be kept as near medium in quantity as.possibler -.Dullness in the head, headache, and congestion of the blood to the brain, are also set, down as peculiar scholastic diseases, in Newcastle, in Switzerland, 296 pupils out of 731 or up ward of 40 per cent. -Biiflered from hcadache, the girls being about twice as much affected from it as the bovs. In Darmstadt, 3,504 boys and girls belonging to public and private schools.were examined by a competent physician 974 of the whole number suffered from headache. In the uppper class of the college of that city, upward of 80 per cent, suflered from the same, complaint. The percentage increased with the increase of studies and intellectual exertion. The Doctor attributes this class of ailments to bad ventilation, and heating school rooms with iron stoves, which imparts a dryness to the air, and takes from it its life-giving prinple. Bleeding from the no.se i« also pidly on the increase in German schools. This is accounted for from the cause just given. The higher classes are more disposed to this manifestation than the lower. Increased mental labor would account for thedifference in the numbers. Curvature of the dorsal column is strikingly noticeable among the pupils of the schools, who have been in attendance for some years. It invariably commences between the age of six and fourteen, and as the curvature of the spine in Gli) cases out of 742 which were examined, corresponded to the bending of the spine, as it is caused in writing, figuring, drawing, and by almost every kind of needle-work, it evidently can not be attributed to any other cause except the habitual deflection of that part of .the body. How trifling a matter will change the proper direction of the human frame at an early age may be gathered from the remark of a skillful orthopedist, who found one shoulder of almost every girl of a class higher t-h%n the other, in consequence of sitting one-sided upon their garments, which by constantly entering into seats on the same side were unequally spread. Pulmonary diseases arc also ranked among those which may be induced by the imperfect construction of school houses. Poor ventilation, dust in school rooms, and especially the defective movements of the lungs and of the diaphram, must, occasion many pulmonary diseases. Scrofulous taints are also developed and aggravated by causes such as those mentioned,' while a large class of abdominal complaints find their origin in defective seats, improper confinement, and false habits in the schools, whereby the circuit ion of the blood in the abdominal regions may become interrupted. These are the facts underlying the report They are intensely interesting, and should be studied attentively and thoroughly by the friends of education in this country. In all the large cities our school houses have been vastly improved within the last few years.

There is more room, ventilation is freer, light better, anil the heat distributed .more equally, lint the end of needed improvements has not been reached.

Scrolalons Complaints. The celebrated fierrnnn physiologist, Dr. Vircliow, of Berlin, lately addressed to the Minister of Public Education of Prussia a report upon the diseases incident to and connected with school-rooms, which is full of valuable information upon this subject. A leading disease, which, to some extent, is believed to originate in the school-room, is nivope or short-sightedness. Of the 10,000 scholars in the schools near and in the neighborhood of Urertlan, the capital of Silesia, seventeen per cent, are near-sighted. The smallest per rentage of diseased eyes was found in (lie villago schools, and the largest in the highest classes of the colleges in the city. In the "gymnasium" thirty-two per cent, of all the students were near-sighted, while afiiong every hundred students of the University the eyesight of sixtv-eight was impaired. The causes of this disastrous condition were found, not only in (lie insuflicicnt Jight of ihe school-room, but principally

Man ShootH liis Entire Face Away with a Horse Pistol.'* From tho Baltimore American.1

A Iloiible case of suicide oecured yes terday morning at dwelling No. 190 south Charles street, the victim being John Phillips, aged 54 years, and by occupation a tin and sheet iron worker. A short time since Phillips became peculiarly embarrassed, aud gave a bill of sale upon his furniture for a debt of !?(0, the money to be paid on the first of the present month. The first of the month found him unprepared to liquidate the bill, and he was informed that a constable would distrain upon the furniture unless the money was pdtid yesterday. At 10 o'clock yesterday morning the party who held the due bill in company with a constable, called at the house of Phillips for Ihe purpose of having a settlement. Phillips, when ap prised of their visit, became very melancholy and refused to speak upon the subject. Finally, however, he remarket! to the constables, "Do whatever you please," and then proceeded up stairs. He had not absented himself upward of two minutes, when the report of a pistol rang through the house. The wife of Phillip* and the constable immediately repairqjl to the attic, where a sickining sight met their gaze.

Upon the floor was stretched the dead body of the wretched man, and by his side a weapon known as a "horse pistol," and from the manner in which his face was rent into shreds, itSs supposed that he shot himself in the mouth, the bullet passing entirely through the head and embedding itself in the ceiling. So terrible was the force of the charge contained in the pistol, that the entire face of the man and the greater part of his head was blown off. His nose and tongue were found sticking to the ceiling, while bits of

blackened llesh and tufis of hair bespattered the walls. Coroner t'arr waa notified of ihe tragic affair, andjieald an iaquest, ihe jury rendering a verdict of I death by suicide. Phillips leaves a wife I and five children. I

Distance Accomplished.

Prom the Aurora (III.) Beacon, Jan. 29.J Yesterday evening a party of two women andjfive children, three of them nnder eleven years of age and one only a babe of five months, reached this city on foot, having walked a greater part of the distance from Philadelphia. here at Hill & Rice's auction room, on the island, where Mr. Hill noticed their fatigued and impoverished appearance, made inquiries, and learning the above facts, called in Marshal Fish, who at once provided them with comfortable quarters under the Court House

After supper Jfthn Hilt, Wilder Gates,

were where they had a sister living—and stopping on the way to Qnincy, where a'noth er lived. Four of the children are girls the other a boy aged ten. They walked the whole distance, from Philanelphia to Cincinnati, at which latter place the Mayor procured them a railroad pass to Chicago. From Chicago they walked to this city, traveling the last day fifteen miles.

The party seemed as cheerful as could be after supper, and recounted somewhat with pleasure the hardships they had endured on ,tlie journey. The gentlemen we have named, with those true feeling!? ofphilanthrophy which are characteristic of our citizens, told them that they would not be allowed to leave this city on foot, nor without money and we were happy to learn -this morning, that the poor wanderers were sailing pleasantalong over-the Chicago, Eurlington and ly and Qnincy road, thehffare paid to Qnincy, and money in their pockcts.
