Criminal Court.—Yesterday morning Peter McCarty and Peter McConnell were arraigned for grand larceny. McCarty, who stole a watch last week, plead guilty His punishment was not fixed. McConnell plead not guilty and his. ^"aj was fixed for Friday. nJ5

Capt. Barnard was in town yesterday morning showing around a pound chunk of yellow ore taken from the "gold diggings" near Marshall, and which he fondly hoped was composed wholly or in part of gold. The application dis elled any belief of this kind

Valentines. The dealers in the comic and sentimental valentines are making quite a spread. It is not com] —-mentary to the tastes of those who buy, to see the largestjspace devoted to the display of the blood red daubs, which are sometimes made the channel for sending forth a great deal of malice and bitterness by the thoughtless and unprincipled.

Dan Shelby hail an audience respect able in numbers at Dowling Hall last evening, and, as usual, gave a good perforroance. Dan Morris, the only new addition to the company, is one of the best delineators of Irish characters that has ever appeared in this city. His dancing is especially good. Another per formance will be given this evening.

Pig Iron.—We hear a great deal about pig iron of late, and the cost of production is a matter upon which manufactnr .era and free-traders widely %-arv. But there are few, we imagine, who know whence the name—pig iron—is derived

At the mouth of the furnace a bed of sand is prepared, and from the mouth deep trench is cut in the Sand, directly in the line of the flow of the liquid iron when it shall pour out of the mouth From this trench smaller trenches are made at right angles—like teeth of coarse comb—into which the iron runs from the main trcnch—or the back of the comb. These side seams are called pigs and the main trench the sow. nence the iron is called pig iron.

About Buying Land.—Mr. Greeley concludes his third article on farming as follows:

When I was last in Illinois, 1 rode some hours beside a gray coated farmer of some 60 years, who told me this: "I came here thirty years ago, and took up at $1 25 per acre, a good tract of land, mainly in timber. 1 am now selling off the timber at $100 per acre, reserving the land." That seems to be a good operation—not so quick as a corner in the stock market, but far safer. And, while I would advise no man to incur debt, I say most earnestly to all who have the means, "Look out the place where you would pre"fer to live and die, take time to suit yourself thoroughly choose It with reference to your means, your calling •and your expectations, and, if-you can pa^ for it, btiy it. Do not imagine t#at land is cheap in the West or the South only it is to be found cheap in every State by those^ able to own and who know how to use it.

that was current Upon our

streets, a few days since, that Hunsucker, formerly of this place, had been sentenced to be hung in Kentucky was false, as he has come back looking aa usual. How, and for what purj jose, such reports are put in circulation, is a mystery to us. We made mention of the report two weeks ago, simply because Hunsucker was well known here, andthis correction is due him.—Sullivan tJnum.

Wicked Sport.—Some person or persons, with less soul than sense, and a mighty small quantity of either, tied an oyster can to the tail of a poor dog yesterday and then started the frightened animal up Ohio street, following it with shouts of laughter as if such brutal treatment of a poor cur was an excellent joke. Ill treatment of anything that cannot defend it self, is about as low an act as cau be committed.

The wooden foot bridges now so^omer ous on the streets of the city, are put down at an average cost of $15 each They will last two or three years only. A permanent stone or iron bridge would be far more economical in the long run •Journal. ...j -•••-•. I

If that is trie, an outrageous swindle is being perpetrated on the taxpayers of the city. These foot bridges cannot cost more than three dollars each, and might be had for less than that amount. We ask any practical carpenter to look at them and hand us an estimate of their cost. It is possible that the Journal is misinformed but if it is not, a job has been put up for no other purpose than to rob the treasury for the benefit of somebody. Who is the party benefited by the swindle? We shall try to ascertain all the facts and ventilate the matter,

Olive Logan is drawing the largest audiences this season of any lecturer in the field. In Philadelphia, the Acswlemy of Music, which holds five thousand people, was packed from parquette to dome, and hundreds were turned away unable to find even standing-room, while tickets were sold on the day of the lecture at |o premium. In Boston, a vast assemblage filled the Tremont Temple. In New York, the immense space of Steinway Hall was black with a dense throng, both on the floor and great galleries. In Bal timore, the Maryland Institute, largc^ as it is, could not hold the crowd which poured forth. In Buffalo, St. James Hall was filled to overflowing. In fact, the story is the same in all the large cities where the brilliant Olive presents her "Girls," while in the small towns, lecture committees grow radiant with delight over the unwonted sight of a crowded house.—New York Tribune.

Olive Logan delivers her lecture "Girls" at Dowling Hall on Friday even ing of next w^k. The sale of seats will commence on Tuesday morning

ant Postmaster General, in charge of the contract-office, has issued a circular to the different railroads in the country that are engaged in the transportation of the mails, setting forth that ."it is the purpose of the Post-office Department, as existinr contracts expire, and it becomes necessary to enter into new engagements, to insli tute such a systematic revision and rc-ad justment of the rates of pay for the trans portation of mails on railroad route? as will eventuate, ultimately, in the nearest practicable approach to a perfect classifi cation of such routes, and graduation of their pay, according to the comparativ value and importance of the service they perform, as the law requires." He, there fore, requires each railroad to ascertain by actual experiment, and furnish the requisite information on the following topics: 1. The actual amount of all mail matter conveyed on the route, to be ascertained by weighing each parcel and pack age received from,-or delivered to, each station. 2. The rate of speed, in miles per hour, with which the mails are conveyed oh the route. 3. Whether a separate car, or apartment, is provided for the mails or agent and, if so, what are its dimensions, fix tures and furniture. 4. The number of times per week the mails are carried in each direction, and tlie number of times they arc accom panied, if at all, by route agents or rail way post-office clerks—the run outward and inward consisting* together, one time or round trip. /S&Sfe-SIWit

The instructions are, that for thirly consccutive working days, commencing on the 1st day of March next, all mail matter that is received or delivered on each railroad, shall be actually weighed by some competent person in charge of such service and the report made accord
