JiSncces8ful!" I heap you exclaim hy, you have just said that he was un known and poor. How can you call painter who sells no pic tures, and who has no reputation, succ«3ssful? I don believe Mrs. St. John is of your opinion

Softly, my good friend: I haven't said that he was a successful painter. I was ^speaking of the man St. j^ohn and I ask you, Gustavus, or any er.ther of our re spectcd fellow-travelers, what is success in any mnnly and generous sense? You know very well that I appreciate the ad vantages of money, and, had Heaven gifted me with parts, I hive no doubt that I should have enjoyed the possession of glory with the rest of you rising men but I still ask, when we foraa to the bot "torn, to the hard-pan, .whsit is success?

Take a striking illustration which cir cuinstances have lately riorccd upon our attention and pray, my good Gustavus, •don't think that your viartue will be •more evident if you plung'e behind a huge Ifan and cry, "Oh my I say, then, there was a traveler who left ms forty or fifty years ago, by the name of Byron. You iuay have heard of him. Ah yes! there it is. You ask me if I have heard of the sni},. Now if—as his lordship might him self have said—if glory is your game, did he not have it? Had there ever been a more enormous and dazzling contem porary renown? He was yoang, beauti ful, fascinating—a lord in a land where lords were then revered, and the most famous man of his time. Men were mad with admiration of his poetry, and one woman is celebrated solely because he ruined her. "Do you mean—?" I hear you beginning. My dear Gustavus, mean nothing. I grant every thing: his genius, his marvelous poetry, the romance of his career—whatever you claim.

And then I ask you and all ray respected traveling companions, Bretlven, is there one of lis who for all Byron's success would have been Byron?

I think that I hear a unanimous chours I i— No! God forbid!" Now what is the real reason for our feeling? When wo get down to it, is it not that the man

Byron had nothing to do with his own success, and that what he, the man, did was mostly contemptible? He was a lord —yes, but he was born so. lie was very handsome—but he didn't carve his own face. He was very fascinating—so was Lovelace. He was a great poet—did he make his genius? Why, Gnstavus, when I was in Bome, I remember going to the Capitol, by the side of which is the church of Ara Coeli and in that church there is 5- a little doll—a vile wooden or wax or stuffed figure—representing the Madonna. On a great feast-day the doll is brought out with all^ the pomp of the

Church, priests and choirs chanting, and censers swinging, and clouds of incense perfuming the air and the doll is held aloft before the kneeling crowd of worW shipera. The little image is hung with I- the most costly gems so thickly that it is "'a crust of jewels which, I suppose, seems t- !t~ifor the time to most of the worshipers to vbe tha veritable Virgin Mary, imparts its ^benediction to them, and is withdrawn with the same pomp into the church.

Lord Byron was that doll. He was -'Vovered 'with splendor, and the jewels ^were genuine for genius and beauty are "not paste. But he, the man Byron, was as separate from them as the doll from the diamonds. It was not he who hung them around his neck, nor lie who sewed t^ ihem upon his golden robes. Take from 'him tho part of his glory that jrasinde pendent of him, and do you finoBjl^thing ^glorious? Strip his life of the glamour of :ihia genius, and is it a successful life? If any school-fellow of his at Harrow, when

Lord Byron's renown was highest, had thought as we have supposed some one of SNelson's comrades to have thought: "What success! what glory my old schoolmate has won—and I?"—would he not haye been a very foolish fellow? For he -would haye been really saying: "Nature

Port Wine, gin, brandy, and other liquors are often prescribed by medican Men for aged persons, bat the impulse which fermented andttistffled liquors give to the circulation, andthe energy they seem to impart, is transitory, unless the alcoholic principle is modified and qualifled by the presence of medisinal tonics and invigorants.— Of all the combinations of diffusive stimuli with the juice* of herbs, roots and barks than have ever been administered to the aged and infirm, with 'the view of sustaining their waning strength, cheering their dropping spirits and relieving the aches and pains to huh they are subjected, none has been lund so efficacious, so agreeable and so manent in its effects as Hoste tier's Stoma Bitters. A HUMBUG.

HOW OFTEN we bear this expression from persons reading advertisements of Patent Medioinos. and in nine oases out of ten they may be right. It is over 22 years since I introduoediDr. Tobias' Venetian Liniment to the public. I had no money to advertisr it, so I left it for salo with a few drupgistf and storekeepers through a small section of the country, many taking it with groat reluctance but I told them to let any one have it. and if It did not do all I stated in my pamphlet, no one need pay for it. In some stores two o/ three bottles were taken on trial by persons present. I was by many, thought craiy, and that would be the last they would see of me. BntI knew my medioinewas no humbug. In about two two mouths I began to receive orders for more Liniment, some calling it my valuable Liniment, who had refused to sign a receipt when I left itat their store. Now my sales aro millions of bottles yearly, and all for cash. I warrant it superior to any other medicine for the euro of Croup, Diarhcea, Dysentery, Colic, Vomiting, Spasms, nad Soasiokness, as an internal remedy. It is perfectinocent to take internally—see oath acpanyintr each bottle—ond externally for jnio 'Rheumatism, Headache, Mumps, Frosted Feet, Bruises, Sprains, Old Sores, Swellings, Sore Throat, Ac &e.

ConsnmptioB.

The Three Remedies. "Schema's Pdliio-

nio

Syrup" for the cure of Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, and every form of Consumption. The peculiar action of this medicine ripens the uloers in the lungs, promotes the discharge of the corrupt matter by expectoration. Purifies the blood, and thus cures Consumption, when every other remedy fails. "Schenck's Sea-Weed Tonio" for the oure of Dyspepsia or Indigestion, and all diseases (.rising from debility. This tonic -invigorates he digestive organs, supplies the place of the 'gastric juice when that is deficient, and then enables the patient to digest the most nutritious food. It is a severoign remedy for all cases of indigestion. "Schenck Mandrake Pills," one of themost valuable medicines ever discovered, being a vegetable substitute for calomel, and having all the useful properties ascribed to that mineral, without producing any of its injurious effects.

To these three medioines Dr. J. H. bchenck of Philadelphia, owes his unrivaled success in tho treatment of Pulmonic Consumption. •The Pulmonio Syrup ripens the morbid matter, discharges it, and purifies the blood. The Mandrake Pills act npon the liver, remove all obstructions therefrom, give the organ a healthy tone, and cure Liver Com plaint, which is one of the most prominent causes of Consumption*

The Sea Weed Tonicinvigorates the powers of the stomach, and by strengthening the digestion and bringing it to a normal and healhy condition improves tho quality of tho blood, by whioh means the formation of ulcers or tubercles in the lungs becomes impossible. The oombined action of these medicines, as thus explained, will cure every case of Consumption, if the remedies are used in time and the use of them is persevered in sufficiently to bring the case to a favorable termination.
