The steamer Gronendyke had the upper portion of Its works torn off by being drawn under the bridge at Clinton on Friday night.

Tub FUNERAL of Capt. Carlton A. Goodwin will occur on Toesday at two o'clock P. M., from his late residence, on South Eighth street

Tback IiAYIHG on the new road to In dianapolia, which has been retarded up to Saturday evening, by a hard pan cut about seven miles out, will be resumed this morning, and for a stretch of four teen miles the iron will be laid down at the rate of one mile a day, with favorable weather.

*.r

Wb were incorrectly informed wlien we made the statement a few day? since that Capt. Barrick had purchased the steamer Gronendyke. He is running the steamer Zanesville for a short time. On Saturday he brought up from points below the largest load of pork ever carried by that boat.

The Comrades-ln-Arms of C. A. Good win are requested to meet at the Central Engine-house, at 1 o'clock on Tuesday, armed and equipped, for the purpose of paying the last tribute of respect to his memory. Soldiers having arms and equipments are requested to bring them to the above plaee.

The Republican Executive Committee met on Saturday afternoon, and resolved upon calling a Mass Convention of the Republican voters of Vigo County, to assemble at the new Court House, on Saturday, February 12th, for the purpose of se lecting delegates to the State Convention and for the transaction of such other busing* as may be brought before the meet ing.

Three ladies got out of a carriage on Ohio street, near Dr. Pence's drag store, on Saturday afternoon, in a sudden and most unexpected manner. The front wheel eame off while they were driving at a rapid rate, and headlong they went upon the ground, greatly to the damage of their clothes, but with no serious damage to their persons, beyond a few bruises upon the face of the lady driving. She held the reins, manfully, until assistance arrived, thus preventing a runaway.

Most of our city readers are already aware that on Saturday evening an unprovoked assault was made by a middleaged man, well-known in this city, upon a highly esteemed citixen, far advanced in life and feeble in health The attack was made upon the gentleman in liia room at his own residence, atai-so ftr W we cau learn, was of sOjdi a character as demand the severest dMRMtiaiiou.— We had report of the affair for pu issue, but at the urgent friends of the gentleman have reluctantly consented to suppreMr it, There are numerous versions of the assault circulating about town, in which, it is represented that great violence was used, and that the party attacked was knocked down with a chair and severely ii\jored. Such, however, is not the fact. The gentleman received only a single blow with the fist, and that not a severe one, and no serious or permanent injury was produced. The truth in this case is bad enough, and there is no necessity for exaggeration. -t,

Carl Goodwin Destroys his Life!

Yesterday morning Carltjpn A. win, a well-known citisen, committed suicide by shooting himself through the head with a pistol. It appears that he had been away from home all the night previous, and returning at about eight o'clock yesterday morning he entered the stable at the rear of his residence, unperceived by his family, and ascending to the loft, pulled a delicate trigger, thereby ending his troubles on earth and sending his soul unbidden in the presence Of his Maker.

POST OFFICE DIBECtOKY.

Coroner Christy summoned a Jnry directly after the commission {f the act, who, after hearing the evidence, returned a verdiet in accordance with the above facts.

Capt. Goodwin enlisted at the breaking out of the war, and served with much credit in the Eleventh Indians. 3y a wound in the head, causing the loss of an eye, he was obliged to retire from the service. His Bepublii friends nominated him soon after to the office of City Treasurer, and spch was his popularity that he ran far ahead of the ticket. Unfortunatly during thetfme he held this office he formed habits of dissipation caused mainly by the wound in his head, which at times caused iniense and prolonged pain. His accounts were kept in such an unsatisfactory shape, that his friends declined to renominate him at the last city election. He felt the rebuke most keenly, and from that date his intemperate habits steadily increased, until at last we are called'to write his sad taking off, with mingled feelings of sorrow and pity. Alas! poor Carl, yon were your own worst enemy.

The City Council held a special meet ing Saturday night last, all the members beiug present.

The ordinance was passed by a unani mous vote and ordered to be published The majority of the Special Committee on the Sunday Law question, Messrs. Not voting—Mr. Scudder. Mr. Coats, of the same speoial committee, submitted a minority report against the passage of such a local Sunday law. This report was adopted by the following vote:

Ayes—Messrs. Cox, Coats, Dowling, Fouts, O'Connell, Scudder and Seeburger. Nava—Miller, Mattox and Rockwell.
