TO
THE MENDELSSOHN QUINTETTE CI.UB. —It will be observed, by reference to the advertising columns, that this justly celebrated musical organization announces one tyf their grand concerts, to be given hereon the evening of the 19th instant,at Dowling Hall. They have been for twen-ty-one years recognised as the finest performers of chamber music in the United States, and their popularity has, during all that time, been steadily increasing in proportion to the progress of musical education in the public mind. Each member of the Club is a thorough artist, capable of the finest solo execution, while together they play with absolutely prrfeot accuracy of time, delicacy of shading, Mid beauty of expression, Their Quintette playing is indeed wonderful in these respects, and seems to proceed from one great instrument of enchanting sweetness and purity, in the hands of one master musician, rather than as being the concerted efforts of five different ihstrn. meats. Their programmes are made up of selections of the choiest genis of the greatest masters, and iflntd a rich vatiety of truly classic musid,l^W« heartily advise our readers to attend tlie concert of the Mendelssohn Quintette Club.

THE INDEPENDENT of last week closes a leading (editorial tribute t$ John Bartholomew Gangh in the following handsome style: "If anybody wants to know oiir opinion of Mr. Gough as a man, tlieso lines aro to certify that we esteem hi 111 one of the humane, great-hearted, God-fearing souls who area dailjv blessing to their fellow beings, and \vli7wo lifers mission is to make the world better by living in it. His1 countrymen owe him a more than common sympathy and approbation.— May Heaven continue to prosper him in his word and work."

THE ROMANCE
"-.-I-.
OF A
PIANO.—Some
Gotham gehins ha? written a little work of this title. It is a smart brochure and contains some facts wjiich may interest our readers. In every instrument, such as the one alluded to in this book, "there are sixteen kinds of wood, namely: Pine, maple, spruce, cherry, walnut, whitewood, apple, basswood' and birch, all of which are indigenous and mahogany, ebony, holly, cedar, beech, rosewood, from Honduras, Ceylon, England, South America and Germany. In this combination, elasticity, strength, pliability, toughness, resonance, lightness, durability and beauty are individual, qualities, and the general result is voice. There are also used of the metals, iron, steel, brass, white metal, gun metal and lead. There are in the same instrument of seven and a half octaves, when completed, 214 strings, making a total length of 787 feet of steel wire, and 500 feet of white (covering) wire. Such a piano will weigh from 900 to 1,000 pounds, and will last, with constant we (not- abuse) fifteen or twenty yfears. The total manufacture of pianos in New York alone averages 15,000 per annum." With a few exceptions, the American pianos are very ordinary, and in a short while have a rattling "tin panish" sound, the action becomes stiff and unequal, and the owner finds that he has a piece of furniture but not an instrument. The instruments of Erard andPleyel, of Paris, Collard, of London, and some of the Leipsic makes are wondei^ of mechanism, durability power, and sweethess of tone and remarkable for elasticity of touch and dis tinctness of articulation! The reasonpianos get out of order, in ltiany instances, is thsCfc they are either put near a draught, too n^ar the fire, with the back to a window or outside wall, are not kept tuned, are not shut after use, and are selected as much as a piece of furniture as an instrument. This, with the amount of "banging" they are subjected to, finishes them. Thalberg once remarked that a piano was a friend to whom he could tell his hopes and thoughts and besure of sympathy and silence that it was something to be caressed, not beaten that, it had soul, even if it was made of wood, iron and other materials, and always sang its sweetest songs to those who dealt kindly with it. -jn.
Rockville Items. 'V"!.',\
From the Rockville Republican we get the following items pertaining lo our neighbor town:
On Wednesday night last, the store of Harding & Bro., in this place, was broken into by burglars, and their safe robbed of $19,235 83, in money. The burglars effected an entrance through a back window, by forcing the shutters apart, and removing the cross-bar, by means of which they were fastened, when by breaking a pane of glass, they were enabled to reach in and unlock the sash, thereby gaining unobstructed admission. By means of a key they succeeded in opening the safe from which, Mr. Harding informs us, they extracted the sum above mentioned. Through fright, or from some other cause unexplained, the burglars left in the room their key files, drills, a dark lantern, a can of powder, and a number of yards of fuse,, which they doubtless designed using in opening the safe, in case it became necessary. As yet no clue has been gained to the perpetrators of the robbery.
As there has been considerable speculation as to whether this loss would not be the cause of a suspension of business, we will state in this connection, that W. H. Harding (upon whom the whole loss falls) informs us that the business will be continued as heretofore, and that he hopes a generous public will still continue tobestow upon llieni a liberal patronage.

INSTITUTIONS.—
Win.' Tenbrook & Co., we understand, li.ive purchased tVo acres'bf land immediately east of the E. & C. Railroad depot, upon which they design erecting a stave factory. Already they have contracted for the erection of the building, are getting out a large amount of timber, and are rapidly making every other needed preparation to put the machinery iu opeat.ion at an early period. Success Io the (enterprise.

The same paper offers thi:* good advice: When you visit the Prairie City don fail to stop at the National House. You will find the gentlemanly and accomodating proprietors ofthis Ilouse prompt in their attention to guests, and their table is always bountifully supplied with the very best the market affords. Long^ may the National continue to enjoy the liberal patronage now bestowed by an appreciative public.
