ONE of the most absurd acts ever passed by an Indiana Legislature, not even excepting the "provoke law," is the exemption of five acre lots from city taxation, provided said lots are held for agricultural purposes. The idea of raising corn, potatoes and other "truck" within the limits of a pupulous city is of itself an absurdity. Land is too valuable for that. But the law was only intended to enable rich persons to hold large lots of land on speculation, without being compelled to pay city taxes.
"OROIDE" WATCHES.-For a considerable time past "oroide" watches have been widely advertised, and to a gullible public has doubtless made the trade in these inferior and often worthless time-keepers a profitable one. We know of quite a number of watches and purchasers which have been "Rold" in this community. The following sketch shows the manner in which the watches are'manutactured:
In Switzerland the several pieces that go to make the complete watch are made at separate factories remote from each other, and the watchmaker is the party who puts the different pieces together. The watchmaker purchases his stock bv the thousand or ten thousand pieces from the different factories. As a consequence of such a want of svstem in making the different pieces, there are always large quantities improperly finished and imrfect. These imperfect pieces are slightly altered and put together, and constitute the movement for the 'oride watch.' These movements are placed in brass cases manufactured for this very purpose, costing about seventyfive cents each, and exported to England and America, where it has been definitely settled the greatest number of fools exist. The French Government will not admit them^unless they are truly and correctly described, and the English Government places them under the ban in so far as to prohibit the use of genuine names or trade marks but like our own Government, it reaps a profit from their importation and paJe These are the famous 'oride' watches. They are worth, according to some of our largest genuine practical dealers and watchmakers in this city (New York), from $1 80 to $4 each. The very best quality cost but $55 a dozen. They sell in the bogus stores from $7 to $2o each, and often for double and treble those

MORRISON'S RESIGNATION ACCKFTED!—At a large meeting of the members of the Presbyterian Church held last evening, after a protracted and excited discussion, the resignation of Rev George Morrison was accepted by a vote of 50 ayes to 48 nays. .RAILROAD ACCIDENT—On yesterday morning a laborer who had jtist engaged work on the road now building to Indianapolis, fell from the top of the cabooset a short distance out of town, and the wheels passing over him crushed one leg almost its entire length in a horrible mannerDr. Link amputated the limb, and for a time it was feared the man could not recover, but we learned last evening that hopes were entertained that he would survive the operation. The injured man sent a request last night that we do not publish his name. We cannot imagine the reason for this strange request, but of course will comply with the same.
