The Sorrowful History of a Cardinal. Miss Brewster writes from Bome: J'Of course there are a*great many distin^OMh©d prelates assembled together now in Home, and one of the greatest pleasures I had on Monday morning Was the chance of looking at each and all of them leisQrly, as they walked through the Sala Re-
fia.
Cardinal Prihce Schwarzenburg, rahbishop of Prague, attracted the most of my attention. He is a tall, fine-look-ing man of about fifty-five or sixty. Fifteen years ago, when this Cardinal was last in Rome, they tell me he was very handsome, and I can well believe it.
Cardinal Schwarzenburg is tall and ulender, has light hair—now gray—fair skin, high, beautiful temples, a keen, cold eye, thin lip.s and delicate features. We laughingly compare him to some of our intellectual, cold-looking American lawyers. The Cardinal's history is a sad one. He is the son of that famous Prince Schwarzenburg who was the Commander-in-chief of the grand army (Bohemian) in the war of the allied Prince against the first and great Emperor Napoleon. Of this General, Ileercn says in his Historical Researches: 'History consecrates the name of a Schwarzenburg, a Blucher and a Barclay de Tolly." His eldest son, who is now Cardinal as well as Prince, in his younger manhood was disappointed in love. It was a sorrowful story, and the lieir of great estates and an old and princely name sought in religion that resignation and consolation which the loss of his desrest hopes required. •'In Holbein's 'Dance of Death,' when Adam leaves the Garden of Eden, we see Death quietly walking along with him and where our first father delves the
round there is Death laboring clo.se behim, stroke for stroke, not as an enemy, but as a constant companion. And thus it lias been with Prince Schwarzenburg. Ever since his youth, when disappointed love drove him out of his paradise, sorrow has been his conHtant friend. His mother, whom he loved fondly, was burned to death at a theatre conflagration and a darling sister, the Princess Windischgratz, was shot in the Austrian revolution of 1748. The Princess went to the window, and received in her heart the ball that was intended for her husband. So no wonder I looked at this stately, lordly Prince, and recalled his own sad life-history whil^ I remembered that of his ancestors. "When we see the representatives of famous emperors, kings, marshals and generals, it is as if the pages of history had taken 'form and flesh, especially when these representatives arc such truly regal persons as Olga Nicolaiewnaof Wurtembergc and Cardinal Prince Schwarzenburg. This German princely prelate made many whom we had formerly admired appear shorn of their grandeur. Cardinal Bonaparte, for example, looked more like a stage prince than ever. The brilliant Parisian chemical diamond paled in the presence of the real gem."
Gleanings.
Baltimore thinks of spending two and a half millions in improving and straightening the channel around Jones falls, near that city.
A Hartford firm has received an order for 300,000 cards to be used as rewards of jncrit in the New York shools,

The Grand Hotel in New York is crowded. It is said that Higgins, the owner, gave it to his daughter as a wedding gift.
An Irish absenteo landlord is said to have sent this comforting iriessage to his steward: 'Tell the tenants that no threats to shoot you will terrify me."
A Cincinnati milliner engaged to make a five-dollar bonnet the other day. She didn't deliver it in time, in conseqence paid ten dollars. ""Will a horse hair become a Miake?" has formed the subject of a magazine article all ready, and is to be debated by a scientific association. ||A blown-Mown barn in Oakland, Cal., was mentioned by the local journal as the only noticcablc movement in real estate during the week.
A New York peanut vender declacrs that "wery few people cats nor more a pint a day," and it is therefore supposed that a crisis is approaching.
THE Topcka (Kansas) Rerordc savs: About a dozen years ago the Reams lived at Leavenworth, the father of Vinnc beins the landlord of the Shawnee House. Afterward the family removed to Wyandotte, and Ream senior kept the Eldridge House. On the journey to Wyandotte Miss Ream drove the cow, and went with her shapely feet bare to save her shoes. She worked about the hotel at washing dishes, and was remarkable for nothing save her being an uncommonly pretty, plump little girl, with bright eves. If she had artistic tastes or aspirations, none of the boarders of "Shawnee" or the "Eldridge" ever found it out. They ate the hash which Yinnie's fair hand served up, and never dreamed that the same hand would ever mold statues at the Capitol.
The Truth.
The "Veteran Observer"—Hon. E. D. Mansfield—in a letter to the Isew York Times, has this very sensible advice: "Cincinnati is the worst advertised place I ever saw, and Chicago the best. And here is a thing which ought to be said, both for cities and newspapers. Cities need advertising just as much as individuals. When the trader, and farmer, and immigrants lose sight of a town, many who might have gone there don't go."

To theso threo medicines Dr. J. H. bcncnck of Philadelphia, owes his unrivaled succcss in the treatment of Pulmonic Consumption. From my'knowledge of "Barr's Pectoral Elixir," and observing its uniform good effects upon the many customers to whom I have recommended it since its first introduction to the public, I feel warranted in saying that I consider it EQUAL, if not SUPERIOR, to any of the popular Lung remedies before the public.

REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE, ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whitticr publishes a Medical Pamphet relating to Venereal Diseases and the disastrous and varied consequences ef selfabuse, that will bo sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable thoso affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their case that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Thoso having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuable work sending their address, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no sub« ject is of more importance than purity of blood and perfect manhood.
It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study of a certain cl&ss of diseases aud treats thousands of eases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only general practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to the Doctor after reading his Medical Pamphlet. Communications confidential. A friendly talk will cost yon nothing'.
