needed, and which we hope to see carried out into practice immediately:*'is to dispense with the present hiocte rtf dispensing pension moneyed widows and orphans, and substituting, therefor a, system of postal orders, by which the recipients will get their pensions bi-monthly. The present ageney system is both cumbrous and expensive. In fact, it is eating Into a very large portion of the present dole to the widows and orphans of our. soldiers. On Thursday Mr. John W. Zehner, Mt Charles Zehner. his brother, and Mr, Joseph Forrest, engaged passage to Jefferson, Texas. These gentlemen had been in this city for some days, stopping at the Laclede Hotel. On the afternoon of the day mentioned, Mr John Zehner went to the Fourth National Bank and:drew,

He placed the bills in a pocketbook and went down to the boat, accompanied by .his brother and Mr Forrest, The Stateroom allotted to them was double pne. and they occupied it together, the clerk giving it to them in accordance with their request. They took supper on board, and then started for a walk up town, and returned to the boat about 9 o'clock, and Retired to .bfd in room No. 4. Mr. "Worsbanij the clerk, before the boat left in the .evening, was particular to warn'the passengers about locking their stateroom doors, and, moreover, cautioned them to

Mr. John Zehner woke up, as he thinks, abouH2 o'clock in the night, and found the door of his room unlocked, but being confused with sleep, did not' think much about it, but merelv reached over and turned the kev, looking the door, then, as though to satisfy his mind, reached under his pillow, took out his pants, felt in his pocketbook and found the money all "O. The facts oft he robbery were promptly conveyed to the Central Police Station, and a dective! was sent down, who made an examination and quickly ascertained that the kteV of the door had been turned from the outside by, the use of a well-known thiefs inclement called an "outsider." Every effort was made yesterday to trace the thief, but no success had attended the oficcers up to a late hour last night. Mr. John Zehner decided to rmeain in the city for some days to assist in looking after liis money, but his brother and Mr. Forrest go on to Jefferson with the Shrevc, which will leave this morning. It seems this steamer was advertised to leajp Thursday evening, and this jk»U poneifspt resulted *nost tnfwfthif^f^M least to one party. Most probably, had she left as announced, the robberv ould not have occured. It nuist be«ud, however, that there is a safe on board of every boat, and passengers having valuables should always place them with the clerk for safe keeping over night, and if thieves secured no plunder they would forsake the boats, and the unsuspecting would travel with more security and larger wallets. fcWmV*
