for January,

is 4*very acceptable holiday number, and is rather better tlian the preceding numbers. Anthony Trollope's "Vicar of Bullhampton" is continued. "The Perseuted Woman," a bright little story by E. Elcourt, i3 given. "The Fairy and the Ghost," a Christ mas tale, by F. R. Stockton,

"On Christmas Eve," a

meditative poem, by Edgar Fawcett, is equally timely. "Our Capitol," by W. R. Hopper, to readable artide on a current topic® I," by Wi A. Th6mpson,Ii« asTfesh and crisp as new lettuce. Lucy Hopper's poem, "The Singer,' ils delicate and descriptive. "The Phiostophy of Self Importance," by Edward Spencer, is quaint and racy. "Beyond the Breakers," the novel being published in this magazine, is continued. James Ross Snowden, who has years been connected with the Philadelphia Mint, contributes an interesting article on "International Coinage." "Going an Errand," is the taking title of a clever Christmas story, by an author whose name is withheld. William Syke's article on "Literary Lunatics" is qiieer. and graplijc. The "Monthly Gossip" and "Literature of the Day" are full of pleaiant chat on the matters of the day.

January number of Putnam's

lion. Edwin M. Stanton. The President has done an act of justice, and paid a graceful and deserved compliment, in the tiomination of Hoi)f. Edwin M. Stanton as Supreme Judge, to the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Justice Grier. The unahiniity of the sentiment of the people upon the fitness of this appointment was as marked as that which dictated tt Mr. Lincoln thc elevation of Mr. Chase to the Chief Justiceship. We believe Mr. Stanton will make a better reputation for himself, and better meet the expectations of the country, than has Mr. Chase. The great services of Mr. Stanton in the War Olfice will never be forgotten, and in view of the vituperation and malice which have relentlessly pursued him since his retirement, by those upon whom his iron hand fell during the rebellion with unpleasant firmness, this marked acknowledgment of the succeeding administration will be heartily concurred with bv the loyal people ofthe nation.

Mr. Stanton's reputation as a lawyer is well assured. During the latter days of the Buchanan administration, wheo» thd old Funtionary wsfa striving hard to do 'something to retrieve' himself, Mr. Stanton was made Attorney General, and, in company with Judge Holt as Secetary of War, accomplished much to preserve the capital and the government from becoming the easy pray of the traitors who infested every department.

Although recently in vervpoor health, Mr. Stanton is now so far recovered as to make it possible for him to discharge acceptably and efficiently the hign duties of his new office. That lie may live long to enjoy his well-earned and merited honor is the wish ofthe Republicans of Indiana.

A Womun Marries Two Wives. A strange disclosure has been made at Ethcrley, near Bishop Auckland, by the death of a woman who has for the past liflv years resided in the neighborhood ami married two wives. It is said that she came from Scotland fifty years ago in the

rmsc

of a young man, and ob

tained employment at one of the collieries, at which shta worked as one of the men for sometime, and paid her addresses to, and ultimately married, a servant girl living at the village-inn. After her marriage, she relinquished worked at the pit, and commenced to make besoms, yellow clav balls, and pipe clay rubbers, which she and her partner vended in the surrounding villages.

They had lived together twenty-three years, when the wife died, and the reputed "husband professed to lament her loss very much but at length the grief wore off and she married a second wife, with whom she lived a number of years, but not on the most affectionate terms, but eventual ly, by mutual consent, they separated. For some time the woman had lain on a bed of sickness, and been dependent upon some kind neighbors, whom, however, she always prevented coming too near her. The other day she died, and then the discover of her sex wns made. The deceased woman gave her name as Josiah Charles Stevenson, and, had often been heard to speak of being heir to some property about Herwick-on-T\veed, but had no money to go and claim it. Many strange stories are told in connection with this singular individual's history.

Served Him Right.

A Pittsburg dandy, after persistently following a beautiful young lady for some time, much to her annoyance, stepped up and asked permission to accompany her home. She granted it, and also her request to enter, when they had arrived. She then locked the door,, and called to her mother that there was a man there who had insulted her. Her mother did not hear, but the intruder did, and hastily proceeded to vacate the premise^, fyut th® damsel armed herself with a brdojh.vnd hit him several blows on the heaS With the handle before he arrived at the back door and made his exit into the garden. Here he awakened the slumbering housedog, and did not scale the fence without leaving his hat and coat-tail behind. He probably won't do so any more.

.U The Bright Side, ,"\ Dr Johnson used to say that a habit of looking at the bright side of every event is better than a thousand pounds a y«ar. Bishop Hall quaintly remarks "For every bad there might be a worse and when a man breaks his leg let him be thankful that it wa3 not his neck." When Fenelon's library was on fire, "God be praised," he exclaimed, "that it is not the dwelling of some poor Aan." This is the true spirit rtf chfeerfuliftss ahd submission—one of the beautiful traits that can possess the human heart. Resolve to see tWMrld oh *ide, and yon have almost won the battle of life at the outset.

guished officers who would be present. The Ex-Senator isfa candidate for Presidential honors, and as he made bat little effort to extend his acquaintance among that class of men during the war, he is now anxious to improve the opportunity. But would the "distinguished soldiers have reciprocated "his "anxiety, had they known he was the individual who makes his boast that he never asked a man to enter the Union army during the war? We think not and yet, on the whole, it is just as well that the ex-Senator made it convenient to be unavoidably absent from the citv at that time.—Ind.
