THE GA|tE|TERS' PALACE. Crossing the Gilded Threshold of aNew York Ilell,

Fashionable Ruin In Its Most Gorgeous (iarb—The Pademoniiim of Poker— The Maelstrojni of Many New York* crs' fortnpes-—Tli« Cpstl|est of tiam-ing-houses.

From the New York Sun, Dceembcr 11,] Some years ago a gentleman of wealth, residing in Albany, became involved in domestip difficulties which culminated in a separation. 15roken-liearted, wretclred and reckless, Gen. Hansom eame to New York, purchased an elegant brown-stone^ mansion adjoining an Episcopal church in one of the fashionable streets up town, and opened a first class gambling establishment. The elegance and liberality of the house led many to predict that its grandeur could be but temporary—that no faro-bahk could sa-tain any such palace. All prediction proved false, and to-day Gen. Ransom's gambling-house, not one thousand miles from Chamberlain's establishment in Twenty -fifth street, is one of the most sumptuous and exclusively patranized of any in the United States.

THE BEWILDERING DISPLAY. The house is 50x150, four stories high, brown-stone front, high stoop, and furnished throughout luxuriously. At the ringing of the bell the immense plateglass doors arc opened, and a young colored boy appears and ushers you into the drawing-room. A stranger is at once struck with the magnificence of the apartment. The main parlor is a long room, artistically frescoed and eleborately furnished, and carpeted with a velvet medallion. Between the front window is a long French mirror stretching from ceiling tofloor, and on its sides hang heavy blue satin curtains over the two mantel-picc&s, which are solid black walnut, hung with blue and gold, arid a mirror is inlaid in the back of every door in the entire house.

THE BANQUET.

In the center of the room is-a long black walnut table, where every'night at eleven o'clock supper is Served—suppers that cannot be bought—suppers that would delight the palate ofEpicursu. establishment does not

The steward oftjifi hesitat^o boast that no other mail in the United States can serve supper an he does, and certainly he should be permitted to indulge in a little egotism. Everybody is welcome, is pressed to sit down and eat as much as he will, free fjf ..all expense, whether inclined to gamble or not. There is no obligation—the courteous and handsome proprietor seeming pleased that you enjoy the repast. Two colored_ servants noiselessly move about with silver travs, niid it is a rule of the house that they never accept a fee, the wages they reccivc being sufficient com pensation for their s«!'vi(X!-i. Two great side boards, loaded with fruits and wine, stand in the room close to the wall. Any one is free to call for liquors and cigars, and to offer monej an payment is an insult. ,(

THE GLITTER OF THE BANQUET HALL. The walls of this banquet hall are frescoed in blue and gold all the furniture corresponds the chandeliers areofgold, mounting a dozen globes each, flooding .(he room with gas-light and the oil paintings on the wall are valuable. In,the jparlor there is no evidence of gambling— no table, no iixture-s nor appartus of any description. The men all around in easy chairs, read, smoke and talk. No singing, whistling or disordely conduct is allowed, and at all times the profoundest 1 uiet prevails. Adjoining the parlor-is the

FAHO BANK.

You cnterbeneath a beautifully frescoed arch into a large circular room, with an umbrella ceiling surmounted by a cupola. The walls and ceiling are painted in dark green and gold, the carpets is of green Velvet with gold figures, the furniture is of black walnut and green reps, and a gorgeous chandelier is suspended with gold chains from above. A cosy soft coal fire throws a glare of scarlet light upon the rich carpet, and the mantle is ornamented by a large mirror and handsome bronze clock. At the head of the room is a long table, around which are always seated a numher of men ongagod in the game of faro.

THE DEALELL.

A line-looking man, known South as "Major", sits behind the "green-cloth" frequently from eight in the evening until live the next morning. The cards are all of the best material, and in the faro-deal-ing they are ineloscd in case ot solid silver, pushed gently out one by one by the dealer. On the other side of the room stands the roulette table, elegantly mounted in silver. Opposite is the whist, poker. and euchre table, around which throngs continually gather to play or to watch the progress of the various games. The"cliips," "counters," &c., are all of the best that money can buy, and new packs of cards are called into requisition nightly.

THE PLAYING

is, in gamblers' terms, "on the square," the proprietor priding himself upon his

honorable

and

conscientious

dealing at all

times. Large sums of money change hands every ni^ht, and $"00,000 is the reputed strength of the'bank. The /intimites of the elegant establishment arc men of all classes. Bankers, merchants, lawyers, artists, generals, and young men about town are frequenters of this palace of the gamesters. Even the reverend clergv have been known to gamble here, and a once prominent General of the Union arniv is a constant visitor and determined gambler. Many of the stylishly dressed men who congregate in front of the Hoffman House during the afternoon, or at Ford's famous bar, under the St James, are the "friends" of the house.

DURING THE PAY.

it is very quiet in and outside the place. The shades arc all pulled down, no one goes in or out, and one at first regards the place as the private re«idence,of some re tired merchant.' Gen Hansom is very jKipular, dresses in good taste, wears no diamonds or jewelry, and is on good terms with his brother professionals and associates.

gang of native thieve?. It is, of course, well known that among the Hindoos V'"St

even

criminal pursuits, such as theiving, pimping and other harmless modes of getting a living are hereditary and form castes from which no one born in-tkem pan escape. The father-fa a pander, and .all his male children must De panders •aLso, jwhile his daughters must marry men who follow the same dicreputable calling.

These people, of course feel no shame at *heir mode of life it is the destiny that fate, and what is equally strong in India, "dustoon," have allotted to them. These thieves form a caste several hundred, stronge. They have no fixed abode, but •wander all over the country and recently a Couple of hundred of them spread themselves over Bombay. Their regular

U0J14 are very singular, and their arrangeii&nis for disposing of their booty perfect. 'AH over the country they have confidential bunniahs, who receive the stolen good? and money. When the thieves arrive'in a place these bunniahs advance them money for food and whatever they may want, and the reaultsof their predatory excursions are day by day handed over for sale. Every now and then the thieves and their banker settteup their accounts.

The gootts taken are rated ait Ihreefourths their value, but the receiver is allowed an additional ten percent, for commission, which makes alltogether thirtyfive per cent. One of the thieves confessed that last year the two hundred who v3si(ed Bombay carried away, at the end of (fie season, no less than 18,000 reals, ($9,000) a very large sum in India, where three-fourths of the population have incomes of only fifty dollars a year. He said that during the week before he was captured "the weather was wet, and umbrellas were the principal booty, but some

brass chattels^ waist cloths, turbans, pockifefejiandkerchiefs, three rupees in money and a gunny bag were also brought in." Some of the internal rules of the thieves are very singular. They may take whatever they can get from the shops, or the ground, or a carriage, but they must not commit even the mildest form of violence If (,'they attacked a man for a purpose of robbing him, they would break their caste, and be turned out by their fellow members. Nor may they steal anythiil^ except between sunrise *and sunset. If a heap of gold were lying in their path after the sun had gone down, they would not touch it. And not only must they steal by day, but the goods must also be disposed of the same day, .either by burying them, or by handing them over to a bunniah.

MORTON'S GEORGIA BILL. It would be a strange thing if a bill of any importance should be referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee and reported back with its original features, unless its author should happen to be a member of the Committee. One of the most notable instances of this kind recently occurred in the action of the Senator Judiciary Committee on Sena MORTON'S Georgia bill. The Committee cut it up until it was stripped of all its important feature?, but the Senator was not to be bafHed in that manner when it was reported back on Monday, he offered three amendments, restoring the essential features of the bill These amendments provide for making the admission of Georgia contingent upon the ratification, by the Legislature^ cf the Fifteenth Amendment for declaring it a penal offence to hold office contrary to the condition^ of the third section of the Fourteenth Amendment, and for making it a fundamental condition that there shall be no discriminating conditions on account of rac.e or color in ability to hold office.

There are several Senators in that body who arc FQF-Vt&ibns to appear conservative, thai in?iiyr of their acts inure directly to the'1 benefit of the Democratic party. Every Senator in that body, knows very well that the vote of Georgia is essential to the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment, and yet, for some reason, they deliberately struck from an important bill a clause that might prove fatal to the Amendment.

Ifthe Fifteenth Amendment is ratified,:, it will be owing.,to the foresight, sagacity arid determination of Senator MoRTon more than any other member of thajbody. It was on his motion that the clause was inserted in the enabling bill providing for the reconstruction of Virginia, Mississippi and Texas, that required those States to ratify the Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution before they should be eligible to re-admissoin. JIad that clause notbeen put in the enabling act, the Fifteenth Aniendment'Would have been'tt dead letter.

It was through the influence of Senajoj' INORJON that the President was induced ih make the recommendation he did, with reference to Georgia, in his recent message.—Tnd

Undefined Ailments.'

There are many ailments, trying in their nature, but the symptoms of which are not sufficiently specific to cnablo physicians to classify them nnder any particular head. As a generat rule they arise from a general debility of the whole organization, but their primary cause, in at leaBt three eases out of five, is a lack of brisk vital action in the stomach and liver. Stimulate and tone the relaxed digestive and *-j»eretive organs, and bodily ease, health and rigor will follow the treatment. 4raongr all the medicines Wkieh have been recommended as conducive-to this end, none have been administered with such uniform and entire success as HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS.

Its ingredients were selected from the vegetable kingdom, originally, with a view to the inrigorstion of the physique and the constitution, and alsp for their anti-bilious and slightly laxative properties. Twenty odd years of experience has. proved that these herbal res-torati-q^Weip wisely chos«n andbavc been judiciously apportioned in this celebrated preparation. To these three medicines Dr. .T. II. Sclienck of Philadelphia, owes,, his unrivaled success in tho treatment of Pulmonic Consumption. Tho Pulmonic Sj'rup ripens tho morbid matter, discharges it, and purifies the blood. Tho Mandrake Pills act upon the liver, remove all obstructions therefrom, give the organ a healthy tone, and cure Liver Comillaint, which is one of the most prominent causes of Consumption.

Tho Sea Weed Tonic invigorates the powers of the stomach, and by strengthening tho digestion pnd bringing it to a normal and heaU thy condition improves the quality of the blood, by which means the formation of ulcers of tubercles in the lungs becomes impossible. The combined action of these medicines, as thus explained, will euro every ensoof Consumption, if the remedies arc used in time and the use of them is persevered in sufficiently to bring the ease to a favorable termination.

Power.and rendering Marriage are permanently cured. The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice aro unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis apers provo that he has been located there onger by years than aay other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in tho West, unrivalled anywhere. Age, with cxporienceS can bo relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past success and present posiion he stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PHYSICIAN WHOSE

REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE, ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whittier publishes a Medical Pamihet relating to Venereal Diseases and the Jisastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse, that will bo sent io any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable those affected to detormine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their case that will answer almost as well for the purpose of troatment as a personal interview but whero it is convenient tho Doctor should be consulted personally.. Those having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuablo work sending their address, with stamp. Thus rou can assist tho unfortunates without their mowing their benefactor. Certainly nosub ject is of more importance than purity of blood and perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study of a certain class of diseases and treats thousands of cases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only peneral practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to the Doctor after reading his Meaical Pamphlet. Communications confidential. A friendly talk will cost you nothing.
