press and to be published in a few days by

T. B.

Peterson &. Brothers, Philadelphia. It will "command a very large sale,Jas it is fully equal, if not superior to "The Changed Brides," "The BridesJFate," "Fair Play," and "How He Won Her," which have proved to be four of the best novels ever published, and which are having unprecedented sales, for Mrs. Southworth, as a novelist, stands at the head of the sensational school. Her conceptions are marked by" originality, and there is a purity and sweetness about her language which give a peealiar charm to her writings? Many of her characters are powerfully and touchingly drawn and we learn to love them because they are more natural than affected. "The Family Doom" will be issued in a large duodecimo volume,,and sold at. the low price of $1,75 in cloth or $1,50 in paper cover or copies will be sent by mail to any place, post-paid, by the publishers, on receipt of the price of the work in a letter to them.

Ladies ofthe Olden Time—Reminiscence oi thet Wife of President Madison.

At dinner, Mrs. Madison always took the head of the table, Mr. Madison the middle, and his Secretaries the bottom. Her memory was so good that she never forgot a name, and would address-each of her guejrts, though just introduced with twenty otheys, as if she hadk^own them for years.

She was a magnificent-looking woman in the drawing-room. Her stately, and Junolikc figure towered above the rest of the ladies. When she found a timid young girl, she would attend to her most assiduounlv, conduct her to the piano, and remain with her till she became more at her ease.

At one of her receptions, a tall, dansling youth, froslj from the backwoods, made his apearngacerand took his stand against a partition wh.ll He 'stood in that position like a fixture for half an hour, and finally ventured to take a cup of cofiee, which it was then a custom to hand around.

Mrs. Madison's keen eye had noticed his embarrassmenr, and she wished to relieve it. She walked up and addressed him. The ooryouth, astounded, dropped the saucer on the floor and unconsciously thrust the cup into his brceches pocket

The crowd is ao' g-ea.," remarked the pontic lady, "that no one oan avoid being jostled. The servant will bring you another cup of coffee. Pray, how did you leave your excellent mother? I had once the honor of knowing her, but I have not seen her for years."

Thus she continued, till tbe.poor youth felt as though he were in the company of an old acquaintance. He took care, secretly and soon, to dislodge the protuberance in his pocket.

Richardson

is in the Tombs, and all for one insipid woman, who if she had been either truehearred or clear-sighted might have prevented all this mischief. It is another of the sad histories wrought by the weak, purposeless fingers of inconsiderate Vomcn. Well! they are their own executioners. Let them go on to the end of time, vacillating, yielding to impulses rather than any idea of good, appealing, entangling, ruining those who love them best. Strong hearts and generous ones arc lit sacrifices for such pale-eved idols. One thing strikes me in this and many other cities. The passionate dramas of the world are wrought not by the young and romantic gills and boys in the first llusli of diiring and beauty, but by men and women worn in the chances of life, who already exchange flushness for the languor and shadftwea trace*of exhaustion. The men and women for whom duels are fought and vows broken are neither heroes nor graces, but colorless faces, with circles round the eyes, and contours that promise acertian indifference to present excitements. Isn't it a riddle? Humanity seems to me born with aflame in its heart which the ardent and impassioned employ themselves fanning to a swift end. It is not Qiir idols, but ourselves reflected, for which we destroy ourselves, with a paganism more cruel than that which lurks under the wood-shadows of the Ganges.

SPECIAL NOTICES.

S

The "correct style for full evening dress" is announced to be a black dress coat, with velvet collar and plain lapels, rolling low. A black embroidered cassiniere vest is the most fashionable this season, though white Marseilles vests are much worn, etttltw to show three shirts studs, with a rolling collar, and are in good take. Trousers are made of fine black doeskin cut easy to the legand with a good spring at the bottom. The shirtbosom should be neatly embroidered and the studs jeweled, small diamonds being the most dressy.' The tie should always be white, the ends a little larger than in the centre and embroidered. Gloves also white, though a light lavender or pale creamcolor is often worn. Boots of plain calf-skin, not patent leathsr.,

They are often preventives of Consumption nay, they are believed to have loosened the! grasp of this terrible affliction, and been mainly instrumental in effecting a cure. In variable climates they should be worn on the breast or between the shoulders, or over' the Judneys, by those who are iubjcet to take cold easily. W dwlw

^^Kecp the fc^rciilntioii Active. A free and regular circulation of the blood is &en)ial to health. It places th= whole sys tem In a state of .active defense against all unwholesome influences, and is an especial safeguard against the inimical effect the sudden changes of temperature, and of damp and cold.

If proper attention were paid to this important fact, there would not only be a great decrease in the number of rases of stomach, bowel and renal complaints, but also in the number of deaths by .'consumption and other pulmonary diseases.

At this period 6f the year, When the dividing line which separates a genial from an in* clement season which has just been passed, a course of HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS will be found invaluable service in improving the condition of the vital fluid and gently stimulating its flow. Violent coughs and colds, like intermittent fever, are the frequent effects of a chilly atmosphere upon a debilitated organization. Diseases of the kidneys often, proceed from the same source, HoW .essential it is, .therefore, for personsofcieobleconstitutions, to invigorate the vital organization at the commencement of Winter. Fortified by warm clothing with-out,-and HOSTETTER'S BITTERS within, the frail and delicate may bravo with impunity an amount of cxposuro and hardship which, nmfar other circumstances, would prostrate them on abed of sickness^ Ifl^thcm consider this and be wise in time. dwlw i\ Consumption.

The Throe Remedies. "Schknck's Polmoitrc Syrup" for the cure of Coughs, Colds, Bronchitis, and every form of Consumption. The peculiar action of this medicine ripens the ulcers in the lungs, promotes the discharge of the corrupt matter by expectoration. Purifies tho blood, and thus cures Consumption, when every other remedy fails. "Sehonck's£5ea-Weed Tonic" for tho cure of Dyspepsia or Ihdige&tion, and all disoases rising from debility.

ng from deb This tonic invigorates. the difeostive organs, supplies the place of the gastric juice when that is deficient, and then enables tho patient to digest the most nutritious food. It is a .sovereign remedy for all cases of indigestion. "Schenck's Mandrake Pills," ono of the most valuable medicines ever discovered, being a vegetable substitute for'oalomel, and having all the useful properties ascribed to that mineral, vfithoutproducing anjtof its injurious effects.

To these three medicines Dr. J. H. Sclienck of Philadelphia, owes his unrivalod success in the treatment of Pulmonic Consumption. The Pulmonic Syrup ripens tho morbid matter, discharges it, and purifies the blood. Tho Mandrako Pills act upon the liver, remove all obstructions therefrom, give the organ a healthy tone, and cure,Liver Complaint, which is ono of the most prominent causes of Con-

The Sol Weed Tonic invigorates the powers of the stomach, and by strengthening the digestion and bringing it to a normal and healthy condition improves tho quality of the blood, by which means the formation of ulcers or tubercles in the lungs becomes impossible. Thb combined action of those medicines, as thus explained, Will cure every case of Consumption, if tho remedies are used in time and the use of them is persevered in sufficiently to bring the ease to a favorable termination.

THE REAL VELPEAU FEMALE PILLS. WARRANTED FRENCH.

rrniESE PILLS, so celebrated many _L ago in Paris, for the relief of female

regularities, and afterwords so -notorious for their crihilnal employment in the practico of abortion, are now offered for sale for tho firs? time in America. They have been kept in comparative obscurity, from tho fact that the originator Dr. Velpeau, isa physician in Paris of great wealth and strict consciontious principles, and has withheld them from goneral uso lest they should be omployed for unlawful purposes. In ovprc«mingfemale obstructions they seem to bo truly omnipotent, bursting open the flood gates from whatever cause may have stopped them but they are offerecPto tho public only for legitimate use, and all agents are forbidden to sell them when it is understood that the object is unlawful.

Caution.—Married Ladies should nevor take them when thero is any reason to believe themselves pregnant, for thoy will be sure to produce a miscarriage.
