The Kissing Deacon.

In one of our Puritanical towns of New England, says an Eastern paper, lived Deacon Brown, a very staid, dignified sort of Christian, a perfect model of propriety. Deacon Brown had the misfortune to lose his wife, and at the age of forty he found himself with a family of four small children, without a mistress to his farm house. As he could not immediately take another wife and avoid exciting scandal, and could not get along Without some one to take charge of the kitchen and nursery, he had recourse to employing a young woman as house maid.

Nancy Stearns was a laughing, romping beauty, who delighted in experimenting upon the Deacon, by way of testing the strength, of, human nature. For :t long time the Deacon was invulnerable, but at last, in a moment of unguarded weakness, he was led into temptation, and committed a "slight indiscretion" with his beautiful house-maid. When he recovered his wonted coolness and presence of mind, he was horrified at the enormity of his sin. Jn vain he repented and grieved over lost virtue. Finally, as a last effort of easing his consciousne, at the services on the following Sabbath morning, he arose and requested the forbearance of thebrothers and sisters a few moments, when hii electrified them by making the following confession.

My Christain friends, you know that 1 lost my wife some months ago (sobs and tears),and that Nancy Stearns has been keeping house for me. And you know that I nave a little child not a year old. Well, sometimes that child would cry at night, and it would be a long time before I could quiet it: and last Tuesday night, God forgive |nc !•—the child cried so hard that Nany arose and came into the rcom, and leaned over the bed, to hush the child —and, brothers and sisters, her leaning over me there made me forget Ch ist," "What did you do?" demanded the minister, sternly. "I—I—ki—ssed her!" stammered the Deacon between his sobs, "but I've been very sorry about it, and prayed to be forgiven, and I want you to forgive and pray for me, brothers and sisters/'

As the Deacon bowed himself upon his scat, like the mighty oak before the tornado, Deacon Goodfcllow arose and astonished the audience still more by saying: "Brothers and sisters, you have heard what brother Brown has said: now he wants our forgiveness. For my part I believe brother Brown is truly penitent, and lam willing to forgive him with my whole heart. And, brothers and sisters, I will add still farther that if I had no wife, and a pretty girl like Nancy Stearns should coine into my

"WHO WOULD SUPPER?" It is now 22 years since Dr. Tobias first introduced the "Venetian Liniment" in the United States, and never in a single instance has his medicine failed to do all, if not more than is stated in his pamphlet. As an external remedy in cases of Chronic Rheumatism, Headache, Toothache, Bruises, Bonis, Cuts, Sores, Swellings, Sprains, Stings of Insects and Pains in Limbs, Back and phefct, its wonderful curative powers are miraculous. Taken internally for the cure of Cholera, Cholic, Diarrhoea, Dysentery, Sick Headache and Vomiting, its soothing and penetrating qualities are felt as soon as taken, The oath with which each bottle is accompanied will show that there is nothing injurious in its composition. Thousands of certificates have been received sneaking of the rare virtues of this valuable article. Any person after having used it once will never be without it. Every bottle of the genuine has the signature of "S.I.Tobias" on the ottside wrapper-

^Consumption Can Be Cured, if

KEAO THB rVIDKSCE,

Facts are stubborn things" and it is to facts alone that it. is desired to direct the attention of the readers of this article.

Many years of severe and thorough practical trial have demonstrated beyond the peradventure of a doubt the fact that the medicines prepared by me and known as

have proved extra

ordinarily successful in the cure of diseases of the Pulmonary organs, or what is usually termed Consumption.

I am fully aware that there are many persons whose prejudices ruiwtbem so completely that "proofs strong as Holy Writ" would fail to convince them of the efficiency of my remedies and that there are others who, under no circumstances, could be prevailed upon

to admit their merits, simply because such an admission would prove detrimental to their particular personal interests

Fortunately for the welfare of mankind, these doubting people form a. comparatively small portion of the community at large. They arc to be found here and there, but, coinpar»d with the groat mass of the world's population, their numbers are so small that I dismiss 4hemi and address myself to those who are willing to listen to the dictates of reason, and who are disposed to admit the strong logic of well-estahluhed facts.

We are told almost daily that

they will cure Consumption•

Oontumptton,

the scourge of the American people, is incurable that a man whose lungs are diseased, must be given over to die that he must abandon hope, and that the arrangement of his temporal as well as spiritual affairs should claim his earliest attention. If there were not facts as undeniable as that the sun will shine in a clear heaven at mid-day, to controvert these random and, not unfreguently, harmful assertions, I should feel unwilling to take up the gage of battle against them, but, fortified with results—facts—which neither theory nor mere assertion can overturn, I propose to prove that

Consumption can be cured,

and that the medicines I prepare—(Ae

drake Pillr, Seaiceed Tonic

and

Pulmonic Syrup

—will, if used in strict accordance with the directions, in a majority of cases effect that whjoe the faculty pronounces impossible—

An oHnce of solid fact is worth a pound of theory. Let me, therefore, present the facts connected with my own individual experience. Many years ago I was a confirmed consumptive, and, like thousands of other unfortunates, was given up to die. Eminent physicians pronounced my case a hopeless one, and told me that if-1 had any preparations to make for th« final solemn event, that I had better make them speedily. I believed this just as confidently as did the persons who thus affectionately informed me that my days wore numbered and that my recovery was impossible. Still, the desire to live lingered in my bosom. I was young, and clung to life with the same tenacity that young men and old men too, ordinarily do. I did not feel willing to abandon hope as long as a single vestage of it remained. had full faith in the sad information conveyed to me by my physicians, but still there was a lingering belief that something could be done, though I know not in what direction to seek for the much desired relief.

It was at this gloomy and evontful period of my history that I first learned of the roots and herbs from which my remedies for this dreaded disease are now prepared. I procured and used them and, to the utter amazement of all—physicians, friends'and neighbors—began to improve. My entire system commenced to undergo a complete renovation. Expectoration, which formerly had been difficult and painful, now became comparatively easy. 1 threw off daily large quantities of offensive yellow matter. At the same time my long-lost appetite returned. ate freely of such food as was palatable t» me, and which was at tho same time, nutritious and wholesome. Expectoration became less copious and less offensive exhausting night sweats ceascd the racking and harassing cough abatco tho fever broke the pain departed flesh planted itself on my sadly wasted frame, and with flesh clime snd full health From a mere skeleton I became a stout, strong, robust man, and I have maintained both strength and flesh to this day. I weigh two hundred and thirty-five pounds I am blest with an appetite vouchsafed to but few men, while my digestive organs are amply equal to' all the requirements of a healthful condition of my system.

Now, be it remembered, all these wonderful changcs were wrought by the use of the medicines I prepare—Mandrake Pills. Seaweed Tonic and Pulmonic Syrup. A cure, seemingly so miraculous, naturally created astonishment in th8 minds of those who knew me. I was literally besieged on all sides. I had visitors daily who besought mo to give them tho remedies which had wrought tho wondorful restoration and had wrested mo from tho very jaws of death. Letters were received by scores, importuning me to impart the secret and inform the writers where tho specifics for consumption could bo obtained. Others, who were too weak to travel, not satisfied with writinf, sent for and consulted me in regard to their cases. To all these applications I responded aslwas-ablo.

I had fully regained my health, and gratitude for tho happy result prompted mp to turn iny attontionto the science of medicine, with the hope of thereby being able to be ot service to my suffering fellow-creatures. I devoted myself closely to my studie., and more especially to that branch of them relating to the terrible disease from which I had suffered so long and so much. I investigated it in all its fearful phases, in order to assure myself that my caso was not an exceptional one. The closer my investigatiens the more satisfactory were myiconclusions. I felt convinced that tens of thousands of my fellowcreatures were not as desperate and apparently hopeless as mine had been, and Iarguod from this that remedies which had proven so cffectivo with me would provo equally so with others. I prepared my medicinoa in a pleasant and attractive form, and announced them to the world. The results are well known. Thousands of sufferingmon, women and children, who were on their way to.the grave, have been cured, and are to-day living evidences of the fact that

Many of his old customers and themost prominent and leading men of-Cincinnati have advised him to make a GRAND DISTRIBUTION of his entire Stock and Fixtures, and have promised him their aid and influence. This Jewelry Store was established by Joseph Draper, in 1832. He was succeeded by H. P. Elias, in 1853. R. HElias, the present proprietor, has been engaged in the Jewelry Business Twelve Years. He can refer with just pride-to all the Jewelers of Cincinnati, and most of the principal business houses with whom he has had the pleasure of doing business. Power, and rendering Marriage aro permanently cured. The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis papers prove that ho has been located there longer by years than any other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in the West, unrivalled anywhore. Ago, with experience! can be relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past success and present posiion he stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PHYSICIAN WHOSE

REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE, ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whittier publishes a Medical Pam-

relating to venereal Diseases and the isastrous and varied consequencos of selfabuse, that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enablo those affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their case that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should bo consulted personally. Those having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuable work sending their address, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no sub* ject is of more importance than purity of blood and perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to tho study of a cortain class of diseases and treats thousands of eases every year, must acquire greater skill in that spocialty than onty general practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduoe patients to the Doctor after reading his Medical Pamphlet. Communications confidential. A friendly talk will cost yem nothing.
