by a German gentleman who is well posted, that tl«S secret upon which the prophecies of the number of FTN'OW storms for the winter is based, lies in THE day of the month upon which the first «now falls. The first one having come on the 19th of October this year, of course we are to have nineteen snows. That is clear enough. But what if the first snow should fall on the 1st of November some year. Would'nt that be taking "snap judgment" upon the rest, and would it not be foul?

SAUSAGE MAKERS.—The
Commissioner of Internal Revenue has just made the following decision, which will be found of interest to our butchers and sausage makers:
The special tax of butchers is imposed exclusively with respect in the selling of butchers' meat, and not for tlia preparation or manufacture of th'E same, and when any butcher, therefore, engages in the manufacture or preparation for sale of any article, such as sausages, mincemeat, cured-hams, etc., which have a separate and distinct commercial value in the market as such, he should be regardas a manufacturer within the meaning.of the law, and he required to pay special tax as such, without reference to the fact that he may have paid tax as a butcher.
THE SECOND MEETING in the interest of the Temperance Alliance, held at Dowling Hall last evening, was even larger than the first, the hall being filled clear back to the rear walls,by an attentive and apparently interested audience. Excellent addresses were delivered by Revs. S. M. Stimpson and W. M. Cheever.
entirely from our midst. These meetings are calculated to do much good, and should receive the encouragement of all good people.

Frank .Redford, well
known as a former resident of this city ,hot and killed John P. Curry, at M'Cune's Mill, in Parke county, on Friday last. We learn an enmity had existed between the two for some time. On Friday they met, hard words parsed, and Curry threw a sledge hammer at Redford whereupon the latter drew a pistol and shot him through the heart. Of course he died instantly. Curtis' wife and child were present and witnessed the terrible scene. He was con-idei ed a desperate character, having repeatedly threatened the lives of several citizens of Parke county. Once before he attempted to kill Redford.
BUSINESS.—
Complaint having been made that certain post office employes upon the railroads were doing a nice business for themselves at the expense of the regular dealers, who were required to pay fare when taking their produce
to
market, the Postmaster
General has ordered the followed incorporated in the instructions: Traffic in merchandise, while on duty, for personal profit,of a railway postoffice clerk, route agent, or mail route messenger, even though the regular tariff rates of the railway company are paid thereof,' absolutely prohibited. Postoffice railway clerks, route agents, and mail route me»sengengers must confine themselves while on the train strictly to the duties imposed upon them by the Department.
This will be considered quite unfortunate by a number of route agents who have been doing a good business in the manner indicated.
GOOD LUCK.—Mr. Frank Cunningham, of the Indianapolis Mining Coal and Coke Company has been absent from the city for two or three weeks, superintending the work of drilling for coal on their tract of land at Newbcrg, on the Terre Haute Railroad, and a few days since had the satisfaction of striking a vein of eight feet. The point where this drill was made was fifty feet north from the railroad track, and the different deposits drilled through were as follows: 17 feet, 15 feet. 2 feet. 2 feot. 12 foot. 8 inches. 5 feet. 1% foot. 8 feet.
