The Charms of Married life.
fcY If in that chair yonder, not the one your feet lie upon, but the one beside you, closer vet, were seated a sweet faced girl, with a pretty little foot lying out upon the hearth, a bit of lace running around the swelling thoat, the hair parted to a charm over a forehead fair as any of your dreams and if you could reach an arm around that chairback, without fear of giving offence, and suffer your 8ngere to play idly with those curls that escape down the neck, and if you could claap with your hand those little white taper fingers of her's which lie so temptingly within reach, and so, talk softly and low in the presence of the blaze, while the hours slip away without knowledge, and the winter winds whistle uncared for i' if in short, you were no bachelor, but the husband of some sweet image, would it not be far more pleasant than a cold, sin.gle night sitting, counting the sticks, reckoning the length of the blaze, and the iheight of the falling/mow? Surely imagination would be stronger and purer if it ••could have the play ful fancies of -drawing womanhood to delight it. All •toil would be torn from mind labor if but "another heart grew into the present soul, quickening it, charming it, cheering it, bidding it ever' God speed. Her face would make the halo rich as a rainbow, a stop of all such noisome things as we lonely souls call trouble. Her smiles would illume the blackest of crowded cares, and darkness, that now seats you despondent in your solitary chair for days together, weaving bitter fancies, dreamintr bitter dreams, would grow light and tlun and spread and float away, chased by the beloved smile. Your friend, poor fellow, dies—never mind that gentle clasp of her fingers, sis she steals behind you, telling you not to weep, is worth ten friends. Your sister, sweet one, is dead— buried. The worms are busy with all fairnew. How it makes you think earth nothing but a spot to dig graves upon. It is more, she says she will be a sister, and the waving curls' as she leans upon your shoulder, touch your cheek, and, your wet eyes turn to meet those other eyes—God nas sent his angel. Surely!
Your mother, alas, she is gone! Is there any bitterness to a youth, alone and homeless, like this? But you are not homeless, 3'on are not alone, she is there, her tears, softning yours, her grief killing yours, and you live again to assuage that kind sorrows of hers. Then these children— rosy, fair haired, no they do not disturb you with their prattle now—they are yours. Toss away there, on the green sward, never mind the hyacinth, the snowdrop?, the violets, if so be any arc there, the perfume of these healthful lips is worth aH the flowers in the world, ho use to gather wild boquets to love and cherish flower, tree, gum, all are dead things things livelier hold your soul. As she, the mother, sweatest and fairest of nil, watching, tending, caressing and loving, till your own heart grows pained •with tenderest jealousy, and ours itself with loving. You have no need of a cold lecture to teach thankfulness your heart is full of it. No, need no—as once, of bursting blossoms, of trees, taking leaf
bursting blossoms, ol trees, taking leat and greenness, turning thought kindly and thankfully forever beside yon there is fruit, for which eye, heart and soul are full of unknown, unspoken—because of unspeakable—thank offerings.
T1IE INQUISITIVE TRAVELER.
A Sharp and Aggravating Specimen.
A correspondent relates the following as his own personal experience: I lelt New York for Albany in no very pleasant mood. Getting up for an early train is neither customary nor agreeable with me the coffee was muddy and the toast abominable. I got into a muss with a hackman about mv fare to the depot, my linger was jammed in the car door, and a fat man stepped on mv toe as I moved to my seat- My face I knew looked forbidding, and though the car was full, the seat beside me was not taken.— "We had gone past one or two stations, when a tall, broad-shouldered, farmerlooking fellow got into the car, and without a Bv your leave," or"Is this seat engnged!" down he sat by me. I gave him a severe look that ought to have annihilaed him, but it didn't. Then I looked out of the window, "and the car moved, on. By and by my attention was attracted by a gentle touch. "Pleasant day." ,,
I gave him to understand,' ill a curt way, that I dtdn'tcare if it was. After a while he reached his long neck out by me and said «wningly: "Looks as ef we should liev some rain, soon." 1 let the remark pass without reply, determined he shoula not draw me out. After some miles he again spoke: "Killed a hog last night." "Well, what's that to me?" I said sharply. "Guess how much it weighed." •'Oh, don't brother me—six dred pounds." "Guess ag'n," after a pause. "Well, say a hundred pounds." The challenge to guess had a trifle of interest in it, but in a moment, ashamed of having shown any at all, I thrust my head out of the window, awaiting my sturd.Cassociate's further advances, lie made none, and after riding some ten or fifteen minutes, I looked round. He was staring out of the window, apparently lost in reflection. "IIow much did yonr cussed hog weigh, anyhow?" I asked as surly as I could. "His face didn't change a muscle, thought thought his eve looked a trifle mischievous, as he replied: "Don't know, we did't weigh him."
Fortunately for my peace of mind, he got out at Rhinecliffe station.
Uulvcrsalist Centenary
The following is an extract from the report of the Centenary Committee appointed bv the lateGeneral Convention of Universal ists, at Bufialo. The year 1870, being the hundredth anniversary of the founding of the Universalist denomination in the Unired States, is to be made a year of special work and effort in behalf of the Church 1
The new century on which we are to enter is to witness an advance of the nation in all that is highest and noblest in polilcal, achievement—a result never before possible to American civilization, because cursed with the barbarism of human slavery. It will also, so the signs of the times clearly indicate, witness as its religious characteristic the supremacy of that Church whose doctrines give t-he most unmistakable support to its advanced civilization. All harsh and partial theologies will surely be out-grown and repudiated, and whatever puts contempt on human nature here, or intimates its hopeless ruin hereafter, will be spurned with righteous indignation. The American Charehsetthe future, based •.**. the divinity of Jesus Christ and. his itoiigioa, firm in its conviction of the truth of the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of. man, and accepting all the logical results of these for its theory of retribution and of destiny, mnst, whatever name ft may choose to be called by, rely, for its organized effort, on those who are already faithful to these Christian doctrines llniversalists of America! All the organs of the body are, 00 to speak, the pensioners of the stomach. In that living laboratory is prepared the nourishment to snstainthem.and by the vessels and duct* connected with the digestive apparatus, that nourishment is conveyed to ever* part of the system. Upon the quality and quantity of this element of life, and upon the manner in what it is distributed and apportioned, physical health mainly depends,' and asrthe mind inevitably sympathises with the body, the vigor of the one is absolutely necessary to the well-being of the other,
It is because HOSTETTE&'S STOMACH BITTERS accomplishes this double object that it enjoys a reputation ai a preventive and curative never heretofore attained by any medical preparation. Bat its direct beneficial operation upon the weak or disordered stomach is not its sole recommendation. It is the most comprehensive of all known remedies. It tones, strengthens and regulates the discharging as well as the assimlating organs gently moving the bowels, promoting health ful operation through the pores, rousing the inert liver from its torpor, and inducing harmonious and natural action in the whole animal machinery. This benign result is no produced by any of the reactionaiy drugs which are used so lavishly in the old school practice, founded by Paracelsus but by mild, safe and agreeable vegetable agents intermixed with a pure and mellow stimulant which diffuses their influence through the system and renders their sanitary properties active and effective. dwlw
Consumption Can Be Cured.
BEAD THE EVIDENCE,
Facts are stubborn things" and it is to facts alone that it is desired to direct the attention of the readers of this article.
Many years of severe and thorough practical trial have demonstrated beyond the peradventure of a doubt the fact that the medicines
prepared by me and known as Man- "een "ceivea
An ounce of solid fact is worth a pound of theory. Let me, therefore, present the facts 'Connected with my own individual experience. Many years ago I was a confirmed consumptive, and, like thousands of other unfortunates, was given up to die. Eminent physicians pronounced my case a hopeless one, and told mo that if I had any preparations to make for the final solemn event, that
drake Pill*, Schendc'e Seaweed Tonic, and this valuable article. Any person after having used it onco will never be without it. EvSehenek'* Pulmonic Syrup, have proved extraordinarily successful in the cure of diseases of the Pulmonary organs, or what is usually termed Consumption
I am fully aware that there are many per_jns whose prejudices rale them so completely that '"proofs strong as Holy Writ" would fail to convince them of the efficiency of my remedies and that there are others who, under no circumstances, could be prevailed upon
ftdml^ion^wo^d'p^ove'c^trimcntaf I Dr. Richau's Golden Remedies. particular personal interests.
Fortunately for the welfare of mankind, these doubting people form a comparatively small portion of the community at large. They are to be found here and there, but, compared with the great mass of the world's population, their numbers are so small that I dismiss 4hem, and address myself to those who are willing to listen to the dictates of reason, and who are disposed to admit the strong logic of well-estahhshed facts.
We are told almost daily that Consumption, the scourge of the American poople, is incurable that a man whose lungs are diseased, must be given over to die that he must abandon hope, and that the arrangement of his temporal as well as spiritual affairs should claim his earliest attention. If there were not facts as undeniable as that the sun will shine in a clear heaven at mid-day, to controvert these random and, not nnfrequently, harmful assertions, I should feel unwilling to take up the gage of battle against them, but, fortified with results—/acts—which neither theory nor mere assertion can overturn, I propose to prove that Consumption can be cured, and thnt the medicines I prepare—the Mandrake Pillr, tkaiceed Tonic and Pulmonic Syrup —will, if used in strict accordance with the directions, in a majority of cases effect that whice the faculty pronounces impossible— they will cure Consumption-
I had better make them speedily. I believed this just as confidently as did the persons who thus affectionately informed me that my days wero numbered and that my recovery was impossible. Still, the desire to live lingered in my bosom. I was young, and clung to life with the same tenacity that young men and old men too, ordinarily do. I did not feel willing to abandon hope as long as a single vestage of it remained. I had full faith in the sad information conveyed to me by my physicians, but still there was a lingering belief that something could be done, though I knew not in what direction to seek for the much desired relief.
It was at this gloomy and cventfurperiod of my history that I first learned of the roots and herbs from which my remedies for this dreaded disease are now prepared- I procured and used them and, to the utter amazement of all—physicians, friends and neighbors—began to improve. My entiro system commenced to undergo a complete renov.'w tion. Expectoration, which lormerly had been difficult and painful, now became comparatively easy. 1 threw off daily large quantities of offensive yellow matter. At the same time my long-lost appetite returned. I ate freely of such food as was palatable to me, and which was at the same- time, nutritious and wholesome. Expectoration became less copious and less offensive exhausting night sweats ceased the racking and harassing cough abatce the fever broke the pain departed flesh planted itself on my sadly wasted frame, and with flesh came snd full health From a mere skeleton I became a stout, strong, robust man, and I havo maintained both strength and flesh to this day. I weigh two hundred and thirty-five pounds I am blest with an appetite vouchsafed to but few men, while my digestive organs are amply equal to all the requirements of a healthful condition of my system.
Now, be it remembered, all these wonderful changes were wrought by the use of the medicines I prepare—Mandrake Pills, Seaweed Tonic and Pulmonic Syrup. A cure, seemingly so miraculous, naturally created astonishment in the minds of those who know me. I was literally besieged on all sides. I had visitors daily who besought me to give them the remedies which had wrought the wonderful restoration and had wrested me from the very jaws of death. Letters wero received by scores, importuning mo to impart the secret and inform the writers where the specifics for consumption could bo obtained. Others, who were too weak to travel, not satisfied with writing, sent for and consulted me in regard to their eases. To all these applications I responded as I was able.
I had fully regained my health, and gratitude for the happy result prompted me to turn my attention to the science of medicine, with the hope of thereby being able to be of service to my suffering fellow-creatures. I devoted myself closely to my studie., and more especially to that branch of them relating to the terrible disease from which I had suffered so long and so much. I investigated it in all its fearful phases, in order to assure myself that my case was not an exceptional one. Tho closer my investigations the more satisfactory wore myieonclusions. I feltconvinced that tens of thousands of my fellowcreatures were not -as desperate and apparently hopeless as mine had been, and I argued from this that remedies which had proven so effective with 1110 would prove equally so with others. I prepared my mcdicinej in a pleasant and attractive form, and announced them to the world. The results arc well known. Thousands of suffering men, women and children, who were on their way to the grave, have been cured, and are to-day living evidences of tho fact that Conmnnption can be cured and I think I may say, without arrogating to myself any moro than is justly my duo, that I have had as much experience in the treatment of consumption as any other person in the country, ana that my success has been wonderfully great.
Let the reader remember that tcosc are not mere fancied statements. They are positive, living facts, of which I am the living evidence, There is an old adage wnich says,
What has been done may beiuone." I have been completely cured of Consumption by the remedies I now offer to the public. Thousands of others have testified to similar happy results from their use, and thousands of thers still might be benefited as I have been, could they but he prevailed upon to try the virtue of The Mandrake Pill*, Seaiceed Tonic and Pulmonic Syrup. All that is necessary to convince the most skeptical of their merits is a fair trial.
Full directions accompany each of the medicines, so that it is not absolutely necessary that patients should see me personally, un less tney desire to havo their lungs examined "1 HAaniAnnllo a mi For this ^m-pose I am personally cc, No. 15 North Sixth

A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINE, as Diploma at office will show, has been longer engaged in the treatment of Venereral Seyual and Privace Diseases than any other Physician in St. Louis.
Syphillis, Gonorrhea. Gleet. Stricture, Orchitis, Hernis and Rupture, all Uninary diseases. Syphilitic or Mercurial Affections of tho Throat, Skin or Bones, are treated wuh unparalleled success.
Spermatorrhea, Sexual Debility and Impotcncy, as the result of self-abase in youth, sexual excess in mature years or other causes, and which produce some of the following effects, as Nocturnal Emissions, Blotches, Debility, Dizciness, Dimnes of sight. Confusion of Ideas, Dvil Forbodings, Aversion to Society of Females, Loss of Memory and Sexual Power.and rendering Marriage improper, are permanently cured.
The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis sC* prove that he ha nger oy years than any other so advertis

ng. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in the West, unrivalled anywhere. Ag», with experience! can be relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past succcss and present position he stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PHYSICIAN WHOSE
REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE, ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whittier publishes a Medical Pam-
5bet
relating to Venereal Diseases and the isastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse. that will be sent to any address in a scaled envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable those affected to determine the nature of their complaint and fire a written statement of their cage that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a jersonal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuable work sending their address, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no subject is of more importance than purity of blood and perfect manhood.
It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study of a certain elass of diseases and treatsthousands of eases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only general ctice. ny physicians, recognising this et. introduce patients to the Doctor after reading his Medical Pamphlet.
