MORMONS IN NEW YORK.

Tlie "Branch" at Williamsburg—The Service—Their Emigrants and Emigrant System—Missionaries to Overspread the Conntry—A .Large Church to be Established in New York. From the New York Tribune].

The disciples of the "inspired" Joe Smith, though their spiritual blindness is great, must be conceded to have a remarkably keen eye for the business of this world. Industry and perseverance, the main prerequisites to success in our limited sphere, they certainly possess. By the practice of these virtues during the past twenty-five years, they have made themselves a name among the natioas and an earthly paradise of one hundred and thirty-five towns in Utah, with, a resident population of 120,000 devout believers in the supreme and superhuman authority of Brigham Young. The same causes which have produced this remarkable result in the. past, binding this horde of men and women from every nation into a harmonious and symmetrical commonwealth, are still in action, and each year sees thousand of persons, who have-been-converted by the eloquence and enthusiasfia of the Mormon preachers, leave home and friends, and cross land and sea to seek the Latter Day Paradise of the West. In the minds of many people a Mormon is a sort of exotic monstrosity, like a three-tailed Bashaw or a hippopotamus, and to these itwill no-doubt occassion some surprise to learn that the greatest center of Mormon operations outside of Utah is New York City itself. This is the grand depot of their emigration department and all their companies which come from Europe en route For Salt Lake must pass through New York. Mormon missionaries, agents, and elders having from two to a dozen wives apiece are constantly passing freely about the city, doing business with our merchants, and making arrangements for their emigrants and in one of the suburbs of the city there is a regularly organized Mormon branch church where service is conducted every Sunday just as it is in Salt Lake City itself. This meeting is supported by numbers of genuine fullblown Mormons, res. idents of the city, who do their parishwork, elect their officers, &c., just like any regular Baptist or Methodist Church. The meeting place of their branch is in Williamsburg, at No. 145 Grand street, in the fourth story of a brick tenementhouse. On Sunday afternoon, at three o'clock, the principal service takes place. After ascencling numerous long, narrow stairways, the visitor finds himself in a low ceiled room, lighted by windows at one end only, and in consequence rather dark. About one hundred and twenty persons arc seated on benches and chairs, crowding every part of the room. At the lighted end stands a plain altar bearing Oxford Bible, and on a table in front of it is a communion service of silver plate, covcred with a linen napkin, as is customary in our churches. Behind the altar and at its sides are lines of gravefaced men seated, about twenty-five or thirty in nun^er, extending clear across the room these are the elders among the saints. The President of the branch sits in the high seat at the altar, unless one of the twelve apostles or of the seventy elders, or some other superior officer of the universal church happens to be present, in which case he presides, in place of the branch officer. Among these elders are some intelligent faces, but the people are, as a rule, from the uncultivated classes— factory hands predominating. They are mostly past middle age or children, and few young men or young girls are to be seen among them. In' the assemblage there may be observed the physiognomical signs of all nationalities .trench, German, Swiss, Scandinavian, Scoich, Irish and English. The greater part, however, are English, as this nation always seems to take to Mormonism more heartily than any other.

The service opens with a hymn sung standing. There is no organ or melodcon in the room, and the only accompaniment is a hoarse violincello, which scrapes a discordant baas. The singing may be full of heart, but certainly displays vere little art, bass and soprano, alto and tenor, all singing loudly in unison. The liyinn book used is a small collection compiled especially for Mormon use, printed in Liverpool, and indorsed bv Brigham young and other magnates. The book contains many of the finest standard hymns of the Christian Church:" Rock of Ages," "While thee I seek," the Missionary Hymn, and many of the productions of Watts and C. Wcselv, and intermingled with these are numerons original productions of an exclusively Mormon character, which are by far the greatest favorites. Some of these sound very singulaly to "Gentile ears." Here is one which often draws tears from the poor homeless hearts: "Yes, my native land, I love thee.

All tliy scones I love so wellFriends, connections, happy country, Can I bid you all farewell?" Most of the hymns are rather deficient in poetical polish: some of very peculiar meter. These are fair specimens: "We thank thee, O God, for a prophet to guide ufi in these latter days. We thank thee for sendingthe Gospel to lighten our life with its rays, &c. "The Seer, the Seer. Joseph the Seor,

I'll sing the prophet ever dear His equal can not now be found By searching the wide world arouud-" Here is one which gives us some insight into their method of proselyting: "Come go with me across the sea,

Wliero hapiness is free: Where Joseph's band, blessed by God's hand. Inviting waits foT thee. With joyful hearts you'll understand

Tlie blessings that await you there I know it. is the promised land. My home, my home, is there."

After a prayer the Sacrament is adm blistered. The presiding Elder says, "Let us bless the bread all rise, and he invokes a blessing upon the bread, which is cut in hundreds of peices, every Mormon in the room taking one then a similar form is gone through with the water, which takes the place of wine, because wine is often impure, and it is considered a mockery to ask a blessing upon a thing which is in itself impure. This service is often preceded by an appropriate hymn. The following is the lirst verse of a common one: "Ye children of our God,

Yo Saints of Latter Days, Surround tho table of the Lord, And join to sing hir praise." After another prayer, the meeting is open for speaking and the Elders present are at liberty to address the meeting. Their exhortations are very similar to those of Methodists, and some of their discourses would do credit to any denomination, eloquent, earnest, and strong but when once they become doctrinal or controversial the cloven-foot of Mormonism sticks plainly out. One Elder, who fled from Nauvoo with the original Joseph Smith, aroused considerable enthusiasm last Sunday by giving an account of the trials and sufferings] of the Saints, when their only property was a ten-acre lot, surrounded with bog and adobe buildings on all sides, pierced with portholes for defense against their only neigbors, the savages.

Another wound up a sound discoure on he duty of the people to their employers and the obligation to a moral life, with these words: "You arc among the world's people this wicked and adulterous generatiou around you here has no more idea of the truth than they had in the days of Bail. You must bear testimony against them. Now you can't bear any testimony with your tongue and the best thins you can do is to get up and leave them. Make yourself useful and respectable among them, and then show what you think of

them by getting up and leaving as soon as you can. Another made wnat Beecher calls a political sermon on the peculiar Mormon institution. "It may be taken up—Congress may take it up, but don't you people be scared. They drove us before from Nauvoo twenty-five years ago, and what is the result? Why the result is we've increased from 7,(KM) to 15,000, and from one setllement to one hundred and fifty towns, and when they drive us again we shall increase still more. Instead of one Territory we shall gain many States —instead of thousands we shall be millions—and the day will come when we shall have all the people and all the State?, and the more they persecute us the quicker they.will come. These sermons are generally in the oldfashionedMethodist style, now making use of the homeliest, most familiar allusions, and now rising in the loftiest strains of eloquence. There are certain cant phrases wich are constantly brought in and uttered with special unction: "The holy church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," "The chosen people," "The beautiful valleys of the mountain," "The new Jerusalem," "The hills of Zion," and other phrases, all referring to Utah and the Mormons are continually recurring. The speakers all wind lip with a form of supplication and close with an emphatic "Amen!" upon wich every one in the room responds loudly "'Amen!"

This is very startling the first time. After all the speakers are through another hymn is sung, and the President says, "You may jarise and be dismissed." The congregation then rises, and he pronounces a benediction and gives them permission to leave.

This branch is a mere resting-place for a few stationary saints and those who must be assisted or earn something before they can leave, but the principal body of converts pass directly through the city to continue their journey. There are conferences in various parts of Europe, and when a company is ready to emigrate it is taken in charge by one of Bringham's missionaries, ana united with others, and when two or three hundred are thus gathered they are put on a steamship and brought to New York. Here is a perpetual agency which takes them in charge and dispatches them by rail westward to the "happy valleys of the mountains." There are conferences in Germany, Holland, France, England, and scattered branches in other parts of Europe, comprising in all about 15,000 persons. The emigration from there is about, 3,000 yearly, and the number of converts is about the same. A large part of these are from the London and Birmingham Conferences. Emigration ommences in April, and continues till winter comes on. Since 1865 the emigration has averaged abou 13,000 a year, counting a few from the United States. The last cargo this season came yesterday in the Minnesota, 350 in all, and to-day they are on their way to the land of promis. There is a larger proportion of Scandinavians than usual among these, 60 or 70 being from that race.Othcrwise'they are as usual, most ly English factory hands of the lower grade, the males outnumbering the females five to one. Many of these emigrants are assisted from a Perpetual Emigration Fund' which furnishes the money on a promise to pay after a short residence in Utah this is under the direct administration of the all-pervading Brigham, and by means of judicious management and copious gifts from devout saints it is becoming very 1 arge. Not satisfied, however, with prosecuting these various schemes of progress here in our midst, further missionary schemes are soon to be inaugurated. One hundred and fifty missionaries of American birth have been called to go about the United States to visit their friends and preach the Gospel of the Latter Day. These will comprise the many elders of. tlie longest standing in the Church, as well as many of the high dignaritics, and great results are anticipated by the sanguine saints. In addition, it is intimated upon good authority that a larger and stronger church is soon to be founded in New York itself, so that it may be plainly seen that if the "Saints" do not succeed in proselyting the world it will certainly iwt be for want of trying.

Tlie Shivering Siension-

It is impossible to suppose that any human being can consider an attack of Fever and Augo a light visitation. And yet thousands act as if suoh a calamity was of no consequence, wliilo thousands who are actually suffering from the distressing complaint neglected to adopt tho certain means of cure. It oughto bo known in every locality subject to this scourge, or,wtiich is infested with remittent fever, or any other epidemic produced by malaria, that HOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS taken in advanco or at the commencement of the unhealthy season, will fortify tho system against the atmospheric poison which generates theso distempers.— This admirable invigorant harmless, agreeable, and possessing raror medicinal virtues than any other tonic at present known, will break up tho paroxsysms of intermittent or remittent fever in from forty-eight hours to ten days. Such is the universal testimony from districts where periodical fevors havo been combattcd with this poworful vegetable Chologogue. In a thievish neighborhood wise men bar their doors add windows, yet strange to say if tho same neighborhood happens to bo porvaded by serial poison they seldom take tho trouble to put their bodies in a state of defonce against tho enemy. SCHEXCK'S

PULMONIC

DR.

SCHBNCK'S

SYBUP for the cure

of Coughs, Colds and Consumption. Dr. SOHKSCK'S SEAWEED Tome, for the cure of Dyspepsia and all the debilitated Condition of the Stomach.

MAXIMUM PILLS,

for Diseas

es of the liver, or to act as a General PurgaAU of these three Medicines are often requir tive. ed in curing Consumption, though the

Pulmon

ic Syrup alone has cured many desperate cases. The Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills assist in regulating the Stomach and Liver, and help the Pulmonic Syrup to dig at and search hrough the blood vessels, by which means a cure is soon effected.

These medicines are concsientiously offered to the public as the only safe, certain and reliable remedies for Pulmonary Consumption and for all those morbid conditions of the body which lead to that fatal disease. Liver Complaint and dyspepsia are often forerunners of Consumption and when they manifes themselves they require? the most prompt at tention.

The Pulmonic Syrup is a medicine which has had a long probation before the public Its value has been proved by thousand of cure it has made through a period of more ,than thirty-five years in all of which time its repu tation has constantly increased and the most obstinate skepticism can no longer doubt that it is a remedy which may be used with confidence in all cas'es which admit of a cure.

Ifthe patient will perseveringly follow the directions which accompany each bottle, he will certainly be cured, if his lungs are not too much wasted to .make a cure possible. Even in cases supposed to bo incurable, when friends and physicians have despaired, the use of this Medicine has saved the life of the patient and restored him to perfect health.

Dr. Schenck does not say that all cases of Pulmonary Consumption are within the reach of mcdicine.but he emphatically asserts that often when patients have the most alarming symptoms such as a violent oougb, creeping chills, night sweats and general debility, even to such a degree that they are obliged to lie in bed, and when they are given up by their physicians they may still be cured. No medical treatment can create new lungs, but when the lungs are very sadly diseased, and to som extent destroyed, a cure may be effected by Dr. Schenck's medicines.

Also in Scrofulous Diseases, these mcdicmes are equally efficient. Dr. Schenck has photo graphs of a number of persons who have been nearly covered with running sores, and now all healed up. This shows its purifying properties, which must be done to heal cavities in the lungs.

In the treatment of Consumption it is of the utmost importance to give vigor and a healthy tone to the system. Hence it is necessary to strengthen the appetito of the patient and improve the digestion. Proper nourishment is required together with such means as will make the food easily digestible. The articles most suitable for the diet of Consumptive patients are designated in Dr. Schenck's Almanacs, which are distributed gratuitously. In general, tho most highly nutritious articles are to bo preferred, but the digestive organs must be strenghtened in order to make either food or medicine serviceable. This requirement is met by tho Seaweed Tonic, and for this purposo it was designn3ed.

When the digestive powers are put in good order the food has its proper effect, the system of the patient is invigorated and the lungs begin to exercise their functions in a nominal and healthy manner. Then the healing powers of the Pulmonic Syrup will complete the

Pulmonary Consumption is almost always complicated with Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint. Schenck's Mandrake Pills intended to remove obstruction from the liver and restore its healthy action. They have all tho efficacy which is ascribed to calomel or "blue mas7," and are warranted not to contain a particle of any mineral poison. These pills euro the mest obstinate costiveness, sick headache, piles, bilious affections and all other diseases which arise from a torpid or obstructed condition of the liver. One box of these pills will prove the efficacy of the medicine.

In Consumption the Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills are invaluable auxiliary medicines. They relieve the sufferings of the patient and assisst tho Pulmonic Syrup in effecting a cure. They have been found useful in advanced stages of Consumption, when the lungs are almost entirely destroyed, and all symptoms according to tbo judgment of tie physicians, indicated speedy death. The lives of patients who were actually in a dying condition have been preserved for months by the use of Schenck's three great remedies.

DR. WHITTIERT/

A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINE, as Diploma at office will show, has becnllonger engaged in the treatment of Veneroral Seyual and Privaee Diseases than any other Physician in St. Louis.

Syphillis, Gonot "»ea. Gleet, Stricture, Orchitis. Ilornis and Rupture, all Uninary diseases, Syphilitic or Mercurial Affections of the Tkroat, Skin or Bones, are treated with unparalleled success.

Spermatorrhea, Sexual Debility and Impotency, as the result of self-abuse in youth, sexual excess in mature years or other causes, and which producc some of the following effocts, as Nocturnal Emissions, Blotches, Debility, Dizziness, Dimnes of sight, Confusion of Ideas, Dvil Forbodings. Aversion to Society of Females, Loss of Memory and Sexual Power, and rendering Marriage improper, are permanently cured.

The. Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis papers prove that he has been located there longer by years than any other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratery and appointments, are unrivalled in the j'West, unrivalled anywhere. Ag«, with experience! can be relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the

T»T A v-r-vrn country. In past success and present posix^IjAiN IIS (i I tion ho stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PHYSICIAN WHOSE

REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE. ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whit tier publishes a Medical Pamphet relating to Venereal Diseases and the disastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse, that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable thoce affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their caee that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview: but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends that ma/ require advice, can supply them with this valuable work by sending their address, with stamp. Thus vou can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly nosubI iect is of more importance than purity of blood and perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study of a certain class of diseases and treats thousands of cases every year, must acquire greater skill in that Specialty than only general practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to the Doctor after readf

ling his lical Pamphlet. Communications confidential^ A friendly talk will cost you nothing. Nb. 617 St. Charles street.
