Suspiciouslooking men were observed yesterday, in several parts of the city carefully inspecting various houses, apparently preparing for burglarious operations.
General C. B. Decker, the gay little fellow of whom we'made mention in our last issue, is 21 years of age, 31 inches high, weighs 45 pounds, and is very handsome. lie attracted much attention in his walks about town ve-sterdav.

The man arrested Thursday evening for stealing Mr. Checver's coats was released yesterday morning, Mr. C. declining to prosecute him. The man, we understand, is a gentleman of fine education but whisky has brought him down and made him what he is.
Wk are pleased to notice by the last number of the Terre Haute Express
that
it lias assumed an entire new dress throughout. That paper now presents as handsome an appearance as any in the State. With their change of base of operations, together with new type, we feel confident the Express will still continue to improve until it will become the leading journal of the State. Success to the Express,
and all connected therewith.—

Tin: woods arc glorious now, and the declining year is in a measure compensated for the painful necessity of dying by being clothed in garments of regal splendor. The hues with which tlie leaves are dyed arc brighter than any tlie painter can compound from his pigments. Nature is lavish with her colors now, and makes us forget the green of which she is robbing us, in the magnificent combinations thai, supplant it.
Temperance.—A public temperance meeting will be held in Dowling Hall on next Sabbath evening, the 31st inst., at 7 clock. The different church'es have been requested and are expected to suspend services for that evening and join in the exercises. A numlier of speakers from among our own citizens will be present. Tlie music will be under the direction of Mr. Paige. Tlie public are cordially invited.

has made one of the
most efficient Trustees this township has ever had, and that is saying a good deal, for some very excellent men have served in that office. When lie took possession of the Trusteeship, some two and a half years ago, there were only 339 enrolled scholars in the township. Now there are 954. In six comfortable houses, school is kept for ten months ih the year—the same as in the city. Three elegant school houses have been built that are ornaments to the suburbs of the city and on the 1st of Soptcmlwr there was §1,100 of the Common School Fund on hand. This i.s a good showing.

Are You a Counterfeiter?—What use do you make, reader, of a counterfeit fifty-cent Postal Ctirroncy, which you find in your pocket book, and do not know where it has come from? Do you invariably tear it up, or burn it up are you careful that it does not get out of your pocket, into circulation again? Have you not sometimes rolled up such a bit of fractional curcency, suspecting it to be counterfeit, and willing to "get rid of it"—by chance or accident, as it were— and so keep square with your conscience?
We have seen men—men whom we would have trusted with Our pocket book —return a counterfeit fifty-cent piece to their pockets after they were convinced that it was spurious. What does such an action mean—provided that the man is ignorant, as is generally the case, as to where he got tlie counterfeit? It means that he is not /eadv to bear the lass of fifty cents like an honest man. Tlie action is a dishonest action. He has no right to put a counterfeit where there is any possibility of his passing it into circulation again.- Tlie honorable proceeding is to burn it or tear it up the very moment its worthlcssnes-s becomes evident. Do not hesitate a second. If you have not this habit fixed upon you, cultivate it! Without it, you are in league with counterfeiters. You are one of the "gaijg"—you are not an honest man. Let this nil a apply to a ten cent "stamp" and a ten dollar greenback equally and rigidly. There are only two questions to be asked. Is this a counterfeit? Yes. Do I know who gave it tome? No. Burn it—tear it up do not return it to your pocket as you value your honesty!
Again, we ak, what is your practice, reader? Do von destroy every little piece of postal currency as soon as you discover its worthle-s-ness? or do you put it in the roll in your vest-pocket, and let it take its chances with its companions when you pay out small change.
Good
Morning.—Did
ness. Tlie first shot fired, perhaps, is from the rotund and rubicund chinned family physician, who has halted over the way, who looks, bows and says "good •'mahning," as he alights on the pave ment, the jar seeming to squeeze the salute out of him, like a whistle from an India rubber doll. The next is from tlie the bilious chest of a morose and moody acquaintance, who regards you as he docs all nature with a jaundiced eye, and who snaps out a monosylable "monnink" from behind his mufflers, which seems to be cut off spitefully by his rat-terrier teeth, and whiffed at you like a whisk of Januarywind round a cold oorner from steel blue 1 ips. Then comes something more cheery from the rosy faced school boy who smiles as he says, "good morning," but the dainty little "good morning" of little sweet sixteen, as she bounds by you, plainly spoken in silvery tones, by rose-red lips covered by a dotted veil, is positively exhilcrating. Then there's ancftlicr salute not less welcome. It is the hearty '"yood

of the honest friend whotnei

The Allen, Pettingill, Delehanty Sc Hengler's Minstrel Consolidation gave their first entertainment last night, the house being filled with an intelligent and appreciative audience. It was believed by many who knew the character of those engaged in the enterprise that the performance would be new and original, and in this respect they were not disappointed. The firBt part was «Kcellent throughout, the music, both vocal and instrument al, being very fine. In the second part, the performance was varied, and everything was new. The old beaten track has been left entirely, and those who de sire to see an entirely fresh, witty, and sparkling entertainment, full of life and spirit, should not neglect the last opportunity to see this troupe,, wlio will make their last appearance to-night, with an entire change of programme.
