FATHER DE SMET
ANI)
To this Father De Smet responded that the two churches might be considerd, in his opinion, as belonging to a circle, of which the Catholic Church was the head and the Mormon the tail. Brigham Young smiled, and did not offer to resent the plain spoken comparison ofhis visitor. He changed the subject, and wanted to be informed of the character of the country beyond the rockey Mountains, with which Father De Smet was familiar, and what the prospects were for making a settlement, where they could be at peace and not molested by their enemies. Father I)cSinet told him that in Oregon and California they would meet with opposition by the people who were pouring in there, and that They would doubtless have to encounter the same troubles as they had in Missouri and Illinois. Hespokeofthe Salt Lake region, through which himself and guide had recently passed, as a desirable place for settlement. There was game, an abundance of water, a fine climate, and but few Indians that would be troublesome. He said that, owing to the obstinacy of his guide after leaving Salt Lake, they became lost and wandered about for several days. Instead of leaving the direction of affairs with his guide, he took matters into his own hands, and steered by the compass for some of the tributaries of the Missouri.
After leaving a country beautifully diversified with grass and' water, they passed over an arid plain, destitute of herbage and water, and traveled all day without finding a drop of water to quench the thirst of themselves or mules. At length the guide saw a buffalo standing in a clump of trees, and he appeared to be sick. The guide fired and shot him through the heart. They came up, and cutting out the stomach of the dead animal, found the contents, consisting of chewed grass and leaves, and from the moist mass succeeded in squeeezing out sufficient liquor to satisfy their thirst. The mules drank the blood as it oosed from the buffalo. At length they struck a ravine in which were several pools of water. Into one of these the animals plunged with their riders upon their backs, and thirst was abundantly quenehod. This proved to be a tributary to the Little Elk river, which (^ecended into the Big Elk, thence to the Yellowstone, along which the party found their way to tlic Missouri river.
Bringham Young was deeply interested in these adventures, and seen after planned his trip to the Salt Lake Basin, the present home of the disciples.

Smithers was a dreadful mean man, oppressive to the poor and ail that, and never paying a debt if he could help it, He had been known to turn a poor widow with a family of small children out into the street of a cold winter's day, because she was unable to pay the rent of the miserable shanty she had of him. "Who First told the Mormon of Salt Lake?
Prophet
Fro:n the St. Louis Republican.] It was in the year 1847, when the Mor mons, in their hegira from Nauvoo to seek a home in the wilderness, were stop ping ajt Council Bluffs to recruit for a resumption of their journey still further West. Father De Smet was returning from the missionary establishment in Oregon, and he and hisguide were descending the Missouri from Fort Bierre in a skiff. On reaching Council Blufis he went ashore and was conducted to the slianty occupied by Brigham Young. He was cordially received by the Mormon apostle, who appeared to be a very plain, farmer-Jooking lan, arid dressed as plainly as any of his followers. Brigham Young remarked hat in their troubles in Missouri and Nauvoo, he believed the Catholics had no hand in the outrages committed on his people, and he believed that the Catholic Church was more nearly in unison with the Mormon Church than any other.
Dr.
have
noticed that mean men have the prefix Old attached to their names, geneally, when their neighbors speak of them.
Old Smithers "took a habit," as thev say in Wisconsin, to attend one of the "protracted meetings." He was struck with conviction the first night and hopefully converted as he claimed, the next. At'te hiv conversion he was announced to address his fellow sinners, and sinneressess on the following Sunday afternoon. The news that Old Suiitheis had got religion spread all about the neighborhood. Some doubted it said he was putting it on so as to skin folks a littlecloser others more charitable, said it might be true, and they hopehed wouldn't be so mean in the future if it was.
When Sunday afternoon arrived the church was crowded. The entire neighborhood turned out to hear what so mean a man as Old Smithers would say for himself after passing through conviction and conversion. All was still in the church when Old Smithers arose to speak. He began by telling what a mean maj he had been all his life. He said he had probably dona more mean things than any man of his years and opportunities living, and if there was any mean thing lie had failed to do it was either because he hadn't thought of it, or there \jas no good chance. After going somewhat into detail regarding his meanness, astonishing even those who thought they knew him best with the recital, and declaring his utter unworthiness, he resumed his scat.
There was a brief pause, after which a neighbor of Old Smithers, a member of the-Ohurch, arose and said: "I have lived nigh neighbor to Brother Smithers for a long time. 1 have just listened to Brother Smithers' remarks, and from an intimate acquaintance with him and his actions lor many years, I am prepared to indorse in the fullest manner all the charges he has made against himself, and more to. lie is certainly the meanest man I ever knew in the whole course of my life," and sat down.
Then arose Old Smithers, pale and trembling with rage, and exclaimed: "it's a d—d lie, and I'll whip you as soon as you leave the church!"—(W:Vnt Tim cs.

THE .REAUWEAU FEMALE PILLS. WARRAXTED FitENCII.
Tago
HESE PILLS, so'celebratcd many years in Paris, for the relief of female irregularities, and^ afterwards, notori®us,for their cnminal'enrpfoyiftcnt in the ptackicd of abortion, are now offered for sale for the firs? time in Ameyic^. They have been kept in comparative obscurity, from the fact that the originator Dr. Vclpcau, is a physician in Paris of great wealth and strict conscientious principles, and has withheld them from general use lest they should be employed for unlawful, purposes. In overcoming female obstructions they seem to be truly omnipotent, bursting open the flood gates from whatever cause may have stopped them but they are offered to the public only for legitimate use, and all agents are forbidden to sell tKom when it is understood that theobject is unlawful.
Caution.—Married Ladies should never take them when there is any reason to believ themselves pregnant, for they will be sure to produce a miscarriage.

Da. Schesck's Pulmonic Syrup for the cure of Cough?, Colds and Consumption. Dr. Schesck'sSkawked Tonic, for the cure of Dyspepsia and all tho debilitated Condition of the Stomach.
Rchrnck'hManukakk Pii.ls,forDiseas-
of the liver, or to act as a General PurgaAll of these three Medicines are often rcquirtive. cd in curing Consumption though the Pulmonic Syrup alone has curcd many desperate cases. The Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills assist in regulating the Stomach and Liver, and help the Pulmonic Syrup to dig at and search hrough the blood vessels, by which means a cure is soon effected.
These mcdicines arc concsientiously offered to the public as the only safe, certain and reliable remedies for Pulmonary Consumption and for all those morbid 'conditions of tho body which lead to that fatal disensd. Liver Complaint and dyspepsia arc often forerunners of Consumption and when they manifes themselves they roi"irc the most prompt at tention.
w.
The Pulmonic Syrup modioinc which had a long probation J)eforc the public Its value has been proved by thousand of cure has made through a period of more than thirty-five years in all of which time its reputation has constantly increased and the most obstinate skepticism can no-longer doubt that is a remedy which may boused with confidence in all cases which admit of a cure.
If the patient will pcrscvcringly follow the directions which accompany each bottle, he will certainty be curcd, if his lungs arc not too much wasted to make a cure possible. Even in cases supposed to be incurable, when friends and physicians have despaired, tho use of this Medicine hWsared the life of the patient and restored him to perfect health.
Dr. Schenck docs not say that all cases of Pulmonary Consumption arc within the reach of mcdicinc, but he emphatically asserts that often when patients have the most alarming symptoms such fts a violent-sough, creeping chills, iright sweats and. general debility, even to such a degree that they are obliged to lie in bed, and when they are given up by their phgpicians they may still be cured. No mcdioal treatment can create new lungs, but when the lungs arc very sadly"diseasod, Rnd to som extent destroyed, a cure may be effected by Dr. Schcnck's medicines.
Alsoan Sorofuloue Diseases, these medicines are equally efficient. Dr. Schenck has photo" graphs of a number of persons who have been nearly covered with-running sores, and now all healed up. This shows its .purifying properties, which must bo done to heal cavities in tho lungs.
In the treatment of Consumption it is of the utmost importance to give vigor and a healthy tone to the system. Hence it is necessary to strengthen the appetite of tho patient and improve: the digestion. Proper nourishment is required together with such means as will make tho food easily digestible. Tho articles most suitable for tEo diot of Consumptive patients are designated in Dr. Schcnck's Almanacs, which are distributed gratuitously. In general, the most highly nutritious articles are to bo preferred, but the digestive organs must bo strenghtened in order to make either food or medicine serviceable. This requirement is met by the Seaweed Tonic, and for this purpose it was dcsigna3ed.
When the digestive powers arc put in good order the food has its-proper effect, the system of the patient is invigorated and the lungs begin to oxorcisc their functions in a nominal and healthy manner. Then the healing powers of the Pulmonfc Syrup will complete the curc.
Pulmopary Consumption is almost always complicated with Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint. Schenck's Mandrake Pills intended to rcmovo obstruction from the liver and restore its healthy action. They have all the cfficacy which is ascribed to calomel or "blue mass," and are warranted not to contain a particle of any mineral poison. Theso pills cure the mast obstinate costivcncss, sick headache, piles, bilious affections and all other diseases which arise from a torpid or obstructed condition of the liver. One box of these pills will prove the efficacy of tho medicine.
In Consumption the Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills arc invaluable auxiliary medicines. They relieve the sufferings of the patient and nssisst tho Pulmonic Syrup in effecting a curc. Tliey have been found useful in advanoed stages of Consumption, when the lungs are almost entirely destroyed, and all symptoms according to the judgment of the physicians, indicated speedy death. The lives of patients who were actually in adying condition havo been preserved for months by tho use of Schcnck's three great remedies.
Dr. Schenck's Almanac containing a full treatise on the various forms of disease, his mode of treatment, and general directions how to use his medicine can be had gratis, or sent by mails by addressing his Principal Office No. 15 North Sixth street Philadelphia Pa.

.« Tlie Shivering: SeasonIt is impossible to suppose that any liuman being can consider an attack of Fever and Auge a light Visitation. And yet thousands act as if such a calamity was of no consequence, while thousands who are actually suffering from-the distressing complaint neglected to adopt the certain means of cure. It ough to be known in every locality subject to this scourgc, or which is infested with remittent fever, or any other epidemic produced by malaria, that IIOSTETTER'S STOMACH BITTERS taken in advance or at the commencement of the unhealthy s^ison, will fortify the system against the atmospheric poison which generates these distempers.— This admirableinvigorant—harmless, agreeable, and possessing rarer medicinal virtues than any other tonic at present known, will break up the paroxsysms of intermittent or remittent fever in from forty-eight hours to ten days. Such is the universal testimony from districts wh^-e periodical fevere havo been com butted with this powerful vegetable Chologogue. In a thievish neighborhood wise men bar their doors add windows, yet strange to say if the same neighborhood happens to be pervaded by a:rial poison they seldom take the trouble to put their bodies in a state of defence against the enemy. The cogs on one end of a roll are set relatively between those on the other end of the same roll, virtually forming a

and thereby nearly donbling the purchase.— (The importance of setting gears in this position is not generally understood.)
Notwithstanding the rolls can separate freely at either end, the Cog-wheels cannot be thrown ont of gear on both ends of the Wringer at the game time, unless the pressor* is taken off.
The Novelty is fastened to a tub or box by a Patent Curved Clamp, which has an equal bearing on the tub the ickole length of the wring»r. Other Wrjngers are merely fastened to a stave at each end, and are thus liable to wrench the stares from their proper position and ruin the tub.
The Cog-wheels, Thumb-screws, Jkc., are nicely galvanized. Bny the "NOVELTY," or at least take it on trial with

DR. WHITTIER,
A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINE, as Diploma at officc will show, has been longer engaged in the treatment of Venorcral Peyual and l'rivaec Disease** than any other Physician in St. Louis.
Syphillis, Gonorrhea, Gleet, Stricture, Orchitis, llerni8 and Rupture, all Uninary diseases, Syphilitic or Mercurial Affections of the Throat, Skin or Bones, aro treated with uinarallcled success.
Spermatorrhea, Sexual Debility and Impotency, as tho result of self-abuso in yonth, sexual excess in mature years or other causes, and which produce some of the following effects, as Nocturnal Emissions, Blotchcs, Debility, Dizziness, Dimncs of sight. Confusion of Ideas, Dvil Forbodings, Aversion to Society of Females, Loss of Memory and Sexual Power.and rendoring Marriage improper, are permanently curcd._
The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis papers prove that ho has been located there longer by years than any other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in tho West, unrivalled anywhero. Ago, with experiences can be relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past success and present position he stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PIIYSICIAN WHOSE
REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE. ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whitticr publishes a Medical Pamphct relating to Venereal Diseases and the disastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse. that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable thoso affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their case that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview: but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends thatrtnay require advicc. can supply them with this valuable work by sending their add'rew?, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their bcncfactor. Ccrtafnly no subject is of more importance than pnrity of blood and perfect manbood.
