FASHIONS FOR CHILDREN.

How Boys aiid Girls are Dressed this Season.

From the New Ycrk^Evening Post.] The 6tyles for children's suits do not differ very much from those worn by la dies, being elaborately trimmed and of

rich material. The Scotch plaids make pretty suits for boys under four or five years, and are very fashionable for girls particularly when made in the Highlanc style. At this season children should be warmly clothed woollen materials are much reduced in price, and the present style of dress requires but a small quanli. ty.

A dress worn by a little girl recently, on the occasion of a party at her home, was of white alpaca the skirt trimmed with rufflesjedged with narrow scarlet vcl vet. The waist was of medium height, and trimmed neatly with velvet a scarlet bow and ends were worn with it. A girl of eight years wore a pink silk the skirt, sash, waist and sleeves being trimmed with narrow white lace.

Dresses for children are also made with overskirts, and occasionally one is seen with panniers, but the pannier seems out of place upon small figures. A party dress for a girl of twelve vears was made of pink silk, with narrow flounces of white Donna Maria gauze. The overskirt was also of silk, edged with two ruchings of white gauze, and caught up at the sides by white rosettes. The sash was of white bound with pink, the ends finished with pink fringe. The silk bodice was cut low and square, with a fall of fringe, and over this was worn a lace waist. White merino will be worn, trimmed with velvet, either in black or in gay colors. /.

For small boys opera flannel will be much used, but the dress skirt should be in the Gabriel style, and scolloped around the bottom and the waist, high neck and long sleeves. The sack should be lined with flannel, and have a cape made separate, that can be worn or laid aside, as desired. The sack apd cape should be scolloped and bound with braid and two or three rows of braid above the edge, also in scollopsj improve the suit,

Jr.

The Knickerbocker trowsere" will be worn by boys under eight years, but are not as much in vogue as formerly. With these trowsers leggings of gray cloth are worn, trimmed with black buttons. A jacket and vest complete the costume, except in winter, when a round cape is worn. -:.M

Water-proof cloaks for girls and overcoats for boys, for school wear, may be lined with soft flannel, so as to be warm enough for the coldest weather* The prettiest wraps for girls are made off all-wool Scotch plaid, ana are quite inexpensive, as they require no trimming but cord and tassel. This wrap is usually worn with one corner thrown over the shoulder.

ON GIRLS.

Olive Logan's New Dissertation.

Miss Logan delivered a lecture on Girls, at Boston, in which she began by saying:

In selecting the subjects of her lecturcs she had aimed not to choose the most popular, but those with wliicli she was most familiar. She had prepared three lectures since she entered the field. The first relatedaltogether to theatrical matters, not because they were of the greatest interest to common lecture audienccs, but because she had become familiar with them by years of experience. The second was "Paris," a subject which was not calculated to interest the average lecture-going class, but one which a number of years' residence there had made her familiar with.

For her present lecture she had chosen "Girls," a subject which she thought might interest her audience, and at the same time it was a familiar .subject to herself. She divided her lecture into a consideration of fashionable, beautiful, jvomanly, Yankee, Western and .strongminded girls. She thought of selecting two other classes, but forbore for want of time. There were the bad girls, who did not come and hear her lecture and the good girls, who did come and sit it out patiently iothe end. It would be impossible, except in a long report, to do justice to the lecture, which was certainly a brilliant. sparkling and as a whole a very good one.

The audience of course were very critical for the first few minute1', remembering her lecture of last year in Music Hall, entitled "Stage Struck," and the reception which it met. Unfortunately, too, the first part of her lecture was the worst, because it appeared shallow, flippant and .superficial, intended only to amuse, aud with no system or moral. As phe progressed and unfolded the plan of her lecture, and became serious aud earnest, she won approbation and began to disarm criticism, and the applause increased in heartiness as she went on. The whole lecture was a plea for abetter chance for woman to show the abilities she possesses, aftd for as perfect freedom as man now has. Miss Logan's elocution was, of course, fine—her long training on the stage doing much for ner in that respect.

Her manner was generally pleasing, at times attractively so, but there was at intervals an attempt at pertness and forced brilliancy which did not add at all to the good effect-of her delivery. When Miss Logan is herself, and aliows the real strength and earnestness and brilliancy which she possesses to show itself without artifice, she is attractive. Wneh she was earnest, as when speaking of the woman's rights movement, there was nothing which the moat captiousxcould find fault with or which could be too much praised. She always won applause at such points, ller lecture on the whole was a success, and will meet with favor among New England audiences.—Boston Journal.

Homes for Fallen Men.

By Sarah Ivnowles Bolton, in the Revolution. Every one must see that the work of reclaiming fallen women is almost useless, while there are so many more of the opposite sex in the same condition. We should have, therefore, as soon as practicable, homes for fallen men. Would many enter? some will ask.

There can be no doubt of it. These men do not desire to be bad. They are led astray by a false curl, a little paint and powder, a pretty foot, a nicely rounded form, a wink of the eye, a smile, or aflutter of a handkerchief, and if they can onlv be removed from tempation, how gladly will they accept the offer. Men have temptations that women know nothing of so they say. Some might suppose that women would be in greater danger of faling from man's importunity.

A majority of men holding public.offices would probably seek these liotnev They would be a secure retreat for many Congressmen and lobbyists. Washington, New York and Chicago need several of these houses of refuge. Midnight missions would be efficacious in connection with these home*. Thousands of wives and mothers would gladly seek out their husbands, and sons, at these dark lionrs, knowing that they would be only too glad to be released from their fair Dclilahs?

Those men who voluntarily ruin girls, should go to the State Penitentiaries for life. There can be no higher crime. These "homes" are two good for them.

While in these homes they should all learn some useful trades, such as making baskets, chairs, shoes, etc., though perhaps wwjiMi's shoes should not Vie made. This trade-learning would be of incalculable lieiieiit to all wealthy young men, who have never thought it popular to learn a trade. It w)u]d be entirely popular here,

and ridkmie would be .done ayray. The food should be very plain and easily digested, as high living tends to develop the coarser part of our nature. Cracked wheat, for two meals of the three per day, would be excellent.

Each horde 'should be managed by a board of women, who should issue their orders through competent superintendents. Women would be Better than men as directors, because men might be to lenient, and only the strictest conformity to established rules could work the needed reform. HESE PILLS,

A,.

Bojrs between the tender ages of 16 and 22 might enter a side apartment, where good schools should be carried on, with all the advantages of a more public life.

All who dri'uk whisky should seek refuge here. They do not wish to drink but they are weak and cannot resist temptation." Ought not women to do something for these instead of turning all their 'attion to their own sex?

Could the necessary funds be raised? Not a man or woman but would give to it. When we see noble men, made in the image of God (I thought the other night as I meta drunken lord of creation, led along the sidewalk by a crying woman, that the image was sadly defaced sometimes), led to destruction bv a few corrupt

We hope such homes maybe started very soon, as there is no time to be wasted in view of such momentous interests.

celebrated many years

in Paris, for the relief of female ir

regularities, and afterwards so notorious for their criminal employment in the practice of abortion, are now offered for sale for the firs? time in America. They have been kept in comparative obscurity, from the fact that the originator Dr. Vfelpeau, is a physician in Paris of great wealth and strict conscientious principles, and has withheld them from general use lest they should be employed for unlawful purposes. In overcoming female obstructions they seem to be truly omnipotent, bursting open the flood gates from whatever cause may have stopped them but they are offored to tho public only for legitimate use, and nil agents are forbidden to sell them when it is understood that the object is unlawful.

CAUTION*.—Married Ladies should never take them when thero is. any reason to believe themselves pregnant, for they will be sure to produce a miscarriage.

Consumption.

DR. SCHBNCK'S PULMONIC SYRUP for tho euro of Coughs, Colds and Consumption. Dr. SCHENCK'S SEAWEED TONIC, for the cure of Dyspepsia and all the debilitated Condition of the Stomach.

DR. SCHENCK'S MANDRAKE PILLS, for Diseases of tho liver, or to act as a General PurgaAll (St these threo Medicines are often requirtive. ed in curing Consumption, though the Pulmonic Syrup alone has cured many desperate cases. The Seaweed Tonie and Mandrake Pills assist in regulating the Stomach and Liver, and help tho Pulmonic Syrup to dig at and search hrough tho blood vessels, ]y which* means a cure is soon effected.

These medicines arc concsientiously offered to the public as the only safe, certain and reliable remedies for Pulmonary Consumption and for all those morbid conditions of the body which lead to that fatal disease. Liver Complaint and dyspepsia are often forerunnors of Consumption and when they manifes themselves they require the most prompt at tention.

The Pulmonic Syrup is a medicine which has had a long probation before tho public Its value lias been proved by thousand of cure it has made through a period of more than thirty-five years in all of which time its reputation has constantly increased and the most obstinate skepticism can no longer doubt that it is a remedy which may be used with confidence in all cases which admit of a curc.

Ifthe patient will pcrseveringly follow the directions which accompany oach bottle, he will certainly be cured, if his lungs arc not too much wasted to make a cure possible. Even in cases supposed to be incurable, when friends and physicians havo despaired, the use of this Medicine has saved tho life of the patient and rostored him to perfect health.

Dr. Schenck docs not say that all cases of Pulmonary Consumption are within the reach of medicine, but ho emphatically asserts that often when patients havo tho most alarming symptoms such as a violent oough, creeping chills, night sweats and general debility, even to such a degree that they arc obliged to lia in bed, and when they aro given up by their physicians they may still be cured. No medical treatment can create new lungs, but when the lungs are very sadly diseased, and to som extent destroyed, a cure may be effected by Dr. Schenck's medicines.

Also in Scrofulous Diseases, these medicines arc equally efficient. Dr. Schenck has photo graphs of a number of persons who have been nearly covered with running sores, and now all healed up. This shows its purifying properties, which must bo done to heal cavities in tho lungs.

In tho treatment of Consumption it is of the utmost importance to givo vigor and a healthy tone to the systorn. Hence it is necessary to strengthen the appetite of the patient and iuiprovo the digestion. Proper nourishment is roquirod together with such means as will make the food easily digestible. The articles most suitable for the diet of Consumptive patients ate designated in Dr. Schenck's Almanacs, whioli aTo distributed gratuitously. In general, the most highly nutritious articles aro to be preferred, but the digestive organs must be strenghtened in order to make either food or medieino serviceable. This requirement is met by tho Seaweed Tonic, and for this purpose it was designa3ed.

When tho digestive powers are put in good order tho food has its propor effect, the system of the patient is invigorated and the lungs begin to exercise their functions in a nominal and healthy manner. Then the healing powers of the Pulmonic Syrup will complotc the curc.

Pulmonary Consumption is almost always complicated with Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint. Schenck's Mandrake Pills intended to removo obstruction from the liver and restore its healthy action. They have all tho efficacy which is ascribed to calomel or blue mass," and are warranted not to contain a particle of any mineral poison. These pills euro the mast obstinate costivcness, sick headache, piles, bilious affections and all oi^er diseases which arise from a torpid or obstructed condition of the liver. One box of these pills will prove the efficacy of the medicine.

In Consumption tho Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills arc invaluablo auxiliary medicines. They relieve tho sufferings of the patient and assisst the Pulmonic Syrup in effecting

a

cure. They havo beon found useful in advanced stages of Consumption, when the lungs are almost entirely destroyed, and all symptoms according to the judgment of the physicians, indicated speedy death. The lives of patients wliowere actually in a dying condition have been preserved for mouths by the use of Schenck's throe great remedies.

ON BOTH ENDS OF THE ROLLS. The cogs on one end of a roll are set relatively between those on the other end of the same roll, virtually forming a

DOUBLE GEAR,

and thereby nearly doubling the purchase.— (The importance of setting gears in this position is not generally understood.)

Notwithstanding the rolls can separate freely at either end, the Cog-wheels cannot be thrown out of gear on both ends of the Wringer at the same time, nnless tbe pressure Is taken off.

The Novelty is fastened to a tub or box by a Patent Owned Clamp, which has an equal bearing on the tnb the vhde length of the wring»r. Other Wringers are merely fastened to a stare at each end, and are thus liable to wrench the staves from their proper position and ruin the tnb.

DR. WHITTIER,

A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINE, as Diploma at officc will show, has been longer engaged in tho treatment of venereral Soyual and Privaee Diseases than any other Physician in St. Louis.

Syphillis, Gonorrhea, Gleet. Stricture, Orchitis, Hcrnis and Runtnre. all Uninary diseases, Syphilitic or Mercurial Affections of the Throat, Skin or Bones, are treated with unparalleled success.

Spermatorrhea, Sexual Debility and Impotency, as the result of self-abuse youth, sexual excess in mature years or ether causes, and which produce some of the following effects, as Nocturnal Emissions, Blotches, Debility, Dininess, Dimnos of sight, Confusion of Ideas, Dvil Forbodings, Aversion to Society of Females, Loss of Memory and oexual Power, and rendering Marriage improper, are permanently cured._

The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis papers prove that he has been locatod there longer by years than any other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in tho West, unrivalled anywhere. Ag®, with experience! can be relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past success and present position he stands without a competitor. THE WRITINGS OF A PHYSICIAN WHOSE

REPUTATION IS UNION-WIDE, ARE WORTH READING. Doctor Whittier publishes a Medical Pamphet relating to Venereal Diseases and the disastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse, that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enabW those affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their case that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuable work by sending their address, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no subject is of more importance than pnrity of blood and perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study of a certain class of diseases and treats thousands of cases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only peneral practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to the Doctor after reaaing his Medical Pamphlet. Communications confidential. A friendly talk will cost you nothing.
