A BRAVE FISHER GIRL.

"The Smartest Girl in Michigan."'

From tho Evening Wiconsin.] While oar steamer Norman lay wooding up at Port Oneida, on the Michigan shore, there came aboard a pleasant, barefooted German Girl, with a pail of berries She wore a cheap calico dress, minus the hoops, with a little gingham shaker, nearly hiding her face. She was rather unucrsize, with a supple figure, and an air of modest assurance that denoted a girl of

fenuine

stamp, but that told the boys to

eep out of her way. All the men about the boats and dock seemed to know her. The steward bought her berries at her own price. JjThe clerk at the office touched lii.s hat to her as if in the presence of a duchess. "That's the smartest girl in Michigan," said the engineer, as sne passed out the gangway. The girl gave no need to admiring glances and compliments that followed her, but straightway sought lier little fish cabin, where she was mending nets by the shore.

On inquiry of the old dockman we learned that our little barefoot maiden, though only seventeen, was the oldest of a family of an even dozen, living in a little double log cabin, on the high bank above the shore. Her father came here fro ir. Buffalo some dozen years ago, went to clearing timber, selling wood to steamboats aod raising stuff on his land. Lanie, the oldest girl, was the "little captain" from the start, and showed pluck beyond her years. In winter she would get on her boots and be out among the wood choppers, before she could hardly waddle through the snow. In summer she would wander off a berrying, or be down among the nets or fishing boats. It was her greatest delight to get on the water, to rock and toss upon the wave.-!. At ten she was a trim little sailor herself, and would roast off for miles alone. At twelve she would allow no boy to pass her with sail or oar.

For the ,last three years "Lanie" has been master of a handsome fishing craft and a set of "gill nets." She puts them out early in April, and continues them till late in the fall. She is out every morning at daylight, and again in the evening, except in the roughest weather. •She takes a younger siste.1 along to help set and draw the nets. She often brings in a couple of hundred fine lake trout and white fish at a haul. She dresses them, fries out the oil, packs and sends thfin awav to market. Iler August awl September catch amounted to over $300. Besides her fishing receipts she has taken in over $170 this season for berries, picked at the odd hour* by herself and sister. All her money goc? to her father. Month after month ho packs it away in old sacks aj«rtockiPgs under his bed night after nfwfft he guards it with sabre and pistol. In all, she is said to have earned him over three thousand dollars.

Of course the old man is proud of his girl, and tells of her exploits with the liveliest twinkle of satisfaction. Danger and hardship seem unknown to her. She will go out in any blow, and come in with full sails, iler white masts and blue pennon is known by people far along the coast. Boats salute her in passing boys swing their hats in proud rcognition. Without knowing it, Lanie Borfein is a heroine.

Consumption.

IS Da. SCIIEHCK'S PULMONIC Svr.tT for tlie curp of Coughs, Colds and Consumption. Dr. SCHKXCK'S SKAWEED TOXIC, for the cure of Dyspepsia and nil the debilitated Condition of the Stomach.

DR. SCHESCK'SMAXDKAKE PILJS, for Diseas es of the liver, or to act as a General PurgaAll of these three Medicines ate often requirtive. ed incuringConsumption.thouchthc Pulmonic Syrup alone has cured many ccspcrate cases. The Seaweed Tonic and Manirake Pills assist in regulating the Stomach and Liver, and help the Pulmonic Syrup to dig at and search hrough the blood vessels, by which means a cure is soon effected.

These mcdicines arc concsicntiously offered to the public as tho only safe, certain and reliable remedies for Pulmonary Consumption and for all those morbid conditions of the body which lead to that fatal disease. Liver Complaiut and dyspepsia are often forerunners of Consumption and when they manifes themselves they require the most prompt at teution.

The Pulmonic Syrup is a medicine which has had a long probation before the public Its value has been proved by thousand of cure it has made through a period of more than thirty-five years in all of which time its reputation has constantly increased and the most obstinate skepticism can no longer doubt that it is a remedy which may be used with confidence in all cases which admit of a cure.

If the patient will perscveringly follow the directions which accompany each bottle, he will certainly be cured, if his lungs are not too much wasted to make a cure possible. Even in cases supposed to be incurable, when friends and physicians have despaired, the use of this Medicine has save.d the life of the patient and restored him to perfect health.

Dr. Schenck docs not say that all cases of Pulmonary Consumption are within the reach of medicine, but he emphatically asserts that often when patients have tho most alarming symptoms such as a violent cough, creeping chills, night sweats and general debility, even to such a degree that they are obliged to lie in bed, 'and when they are. given up by their physicians they may still be cured. No medical treatment can create new lungs, but when the lungs are very sadly diseased, and to som extent destroyed, a cure may be effected by Dr. Schenck's medicines.

Also in Scrofulous Diseases, these medicines arc equally efficient. Dr. Sehcnck has photo graphs of a number of persons who have been nearly covered with running sores, and now all healed up. This shows its purifying properties, which must bo done to heal cavities in the lungs.

In the treatment of Consumption it is of the utmost importance to give vigor and a healthy tone to the system. Hence it is necessary to strengthen the appetite of the patient and improve the digestion. Proper nourishment is required together with such means as will make the food easily digestible. The articles most suitable for the diet of Consumptive patients are designated in Dr. Schenck's Almanacs, which arc distributed gratuitously. In general, the most highly nutritious articles are to be preferred, but the digestive organs must be strenghtened in order to make cither food or medicine serviceable. This requirement is met by the Seaweed Tonic, and for this purpose it was designated.

When the digestive powers are put in good Older the food has its proper effect, the system of tho patient is invented and the lungs begin to exercise Jfcgif functions in a nominal and healthy mtW1'

T1en

the healing pow

ers of the PuJrtiSUSc Syrup will complete tho cure. Pulmc'ary Consumption is almost always complicated with Dyspepsia and Liver Comp)»fnt. Schenck's Mandrake Pills intended to remove obstruction from the liver and restore its healthy action. They have all the efficacy which is ascribed to calomel or "blue mass," and are warranted not to contain a particle of any mineral poison. These pills cure the mast obstinate costiveness, sick headache, piles, bilious affections and all otherdiseases which arise from a torpid or obstructed condition of the liver. One box of those pills will prove the efficacy of the medicine.

In Consumption the Seaweed' Tonic and Mandrake Pills are invaluable auxiliary medicines. They relieve the sufferings of the pationt and assisst the Pulmonic Syrup in effecting a cure. They have been found useful in advanced stages of Consumption, when the lungs are almost entirely destroyed, and all symptoms according to the judgment of the physicians, indicated speedy death. The lives of patients who were actually in a dying condition have been preserved for months by the use of Schenck's three great remedies.

Dr. Schenck's Ahnnnac containing a full treatise on the various forms of disoase, hi* mode oftrcatment, and general directions how to use his medicine can be had gratis, or sent by mails by addressing his Principal Office No. 15 North Sixth street Philadelphia Pa.

Price of the Pulmonic Syrup aurl Seaweed Tonic each $1,50 per bottle, or $7,50 a half dozen. Mandrake Pills 25 cents per box.

DR. WHITTIER,

A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINE, as Diploma at office will show, has been longer engaged in the treatment of Venoreral Seyual and Privaec Diseases than any other Physician in St. Louis.

Svphillis, Gonorrhea, Gleet, Stricture, Orchitis, Hcrnis and Rupture, all Uninary diseases. Syphilitic or Mercurial Affoctions of the Throat, Skin or Bones, are treated with unparalleled success.

The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis papers prove that ne has been located there longer by years than any other so advertising. The establishment, library, labratory and appointments, are unrivalled in the West, unrivalled anywhere. Ag», with experience! can be relied upon, and the Doctor can refer to many physicians throughout the country. In past success and present position he stands without a competitor. relating to Venereal Diseases and the isastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse. that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable those affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their ease that will answer almost as well f)r the purpose of treatment as a personal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuable work by sending their address, with stamp. Thus yon can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no subject is of more importance than purity of Dlood and perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who confines himself exclusively to the study of a certain class of diseases and treats thousands of cases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only general practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to tho Doctor after reading his Medical Pamphlet. Comfnunications confidential. A friendly talk will cost yon nothing.
