Fashionable Suicide.

We would scorn to discuss so puerile and ridiculous a suhjcct as fashion, were it not for the suicide of our daughters in their anxiety to be fashionable.

We allude to-day to the fashionable "lady-like" waist which has again become a leading object with mothers, daugters mantua-makers, and we fear with our teachers, both temporal and spiritual. Corsets are again "all the rage." The decree has gone forth from the center of all fashionable abomination the the cultivation of the waist has been too mnch neglected, and the wasp form must be restored.

Our attention is called to this subject by a case that has just come to our attention. A girl of sixteen, three years ago, was healthy, rosy and natural. She is now pale, feeble, unable to exercise, "pinched up" with the morning and evening cold, and altogether spiritless and uncomforta ble. Three years ago the parents and friends of this girl became alarmed at the healthful completeness which her waist was likely to have—a form considered coarse and vulgar by the genteel, and especially by the mantua-riiaker. Two years ago she put on corsets of 21 inches.

A year of compression had reduced her to nineteen, and a few months more to eighteen inches—showing the success of that instrument in improving upon GOD'S work and bringing a healthy figure into the genteel form, ruining the health and hastening the victim to a consumptive's

fy

rave. The other day this girl was told her dress-maker that her waist was yet altogether too large, and the work of the corsets must go on.

But a factwhicli we wish tocall attention to concerns our public shools. This girl Wiis attending one of the

Intermediates, and

was, with the other girls, told by the teacher of gymnastics to loosen her corsets, as breath was needed in his department. The female teacher of the school told her pupils that the gymnastic professor was a "vulgar man"—and she counteracted what little influence he hoped to exert in saving the girls from suicide

In this the extent of the practical qualification of our teachers Is it not time that our young were taught the most important of sciences— that of health, which is of more value than all else that is, ever was or ever can be taught

Are we preparing our daughters for sickly, miserable wives to fill with misery households that should be happy, and to fall under this fatal stroke of fashion before ten years of married life shall have passed

Is not this a sin against both GOD and humaninity Should not the Church attack it, the schools attack it, and all who have respect to good morals wage war upon it as one of tlie greatest crimes of the age

Intemperance is nothing compared to it. Murderers kill a few—corsets kill many, yea, countless numbers. The rebellion killed 400,000 men—corsets are killing thrice thatr number of womenjand six times that number of babes.—Cin. Tjmcis.

A Terrible Cyclone, and the Way to (Mont of It. Captain Livingston, of the ship American Congress, at this port yesterday from London, gives a graphic account of a ter rible cyclone he experienced on the voyage, and how he succeeded in getting his ship safely through it with no serious damage. On September 14, the ship was in the calm center of cyclone, which, in a short time worked into terrible fierceness, Captain L. judged it was the body or portion of a hurricane traveling from the West Indies along the Southern edge of the Gulf Stream to the East in a belt 100 miles wide. By his knowledge of these terrible meteorological commotions, lie concluded that to sail through the body of the cyclone was the only means of saving his masts, which would be sure to go if he hove to in the vortex. At 11 o'clock at night he was in the thick of it, the ship being so covered with spray as to resemble a snow-drift, the scene being made awfully terrible by the vivid lightning, the fire-balls flying around the ship in all directions, and accompanied with fierce hail and rain. At two o'clock in tlie morning the ship ran out of the northern edge of the storm, without loss of sail or spar. The Captain gives the extraordinary strcntli of his good ship the credit of thus triumphing over the stormy elements, but we doubt whether the result would have been equally satisfactory if she had not been under the guidance of an experienced mariner. He is convinced that these rotary winds can be passed through to either North or South, and that the distance of the center can be judged by the movements of the clouds. Captain L. unfortunately received injuries bv a heavy sea crushing him against the house, and several of his men were badly injured,—New York Commercial Advertiser.

In Cork, the crier of thf, court anxious todisperce the court around the, crowd exclaimed, "All veblackgards that isn't lawvers/quit the court

When Haddock's wife kickec him out of bed he said, "Look here, now, if you do that again it will be likely to cause a coldness in the family."

What is the difference between editorial and matrimonial experience In the former the devil cries for "copy." In the latter the "copy" cries like the devil.

I think I have seen you before, sir," said one gentleman to another. "Are you not Owen Smith "O yes" said the other, I'm owen' Smith, and owen' Jones, and owin' Brown, and owin everybody."

"You have last some of your friends, I see, said a traveler to a negro whom he had met on the road. "Yes, massa." "Was it a near or distant relative?" Well, purty distant, 'bout thirty-four miles."

"Nature has written 'honest man' on his face," said a man to Jerrold, speaking of a person in whom Jerrold's faith was not altogether blind. "Humph!" replied Jerrold, "then the pen must have been a very bad one."

"Do you believe in the appearance of spirits, father!" asked a rather fast young man of his indulgent sire. "No, Tom, but I believe in their disappearance, since I missed my bottle of Bourbon last night," replied the old gentleman.

Amiable Mother: "Here, Tommy, is some nice castor oil, with orange peel in it." Doctor: "Now remember, don't give it all to Tommy, leave some for me." Tommy (who has been there before): "Doctor's a nice man, ma, give it all to the Doctor."

A Boston philanthropist, visiting the State prison, remarked to a prisoner, "Most of your friends think your sentence was excessive nothing like it was ever known." "Yes, I suppose so," was the reply "but then, you know, every thing has gone up since the war."

Once upon a time Douglas Jerrold was visited for a subscription to the society for the conversion of the Jews. "Sir," said he, "I cannot contribute to your fund' but if you will send a Jew to rnc I will do my Best to convert him."

for the cure

DR. SCHKNCK'S MANDRAKK PILLS,for

Diseas

es of the liver, or to act as a General PurgaAll of these three Medicines are often requirtive. cd in curing Consumption, though the Pulmonic Syrup alone has cured many desperate cases The Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills assist in regulating the Stomach and Liver, and help the Pulmonic Syrup to dig at and search hrough the blood vessels, by which means a cure is soon effected.

These medicines are concsientiously offered to the public as the only safe, certain and reliable remedies for Pulmonary Consumption and for all those morbid conditions of the body which lead to that fatal disease. Liver Complaint and dyspepsia are often forerun ners of Consumption and when they manifes themselves they require the most prompt at tention.

The Pulmonic Syrup is a medicine which hus had a long probation before the public Its value has been proved by thousand of cure it has made through a period of more than thirty-five years in all of which time its reputation lias constantly increased and the most obstinate skepticism can no longer doubt that it is a remedy which may boused with confidence in all cases which admit of a cure.

If the patient will perseveringly follow the directions which accompany each bottle, he will certainly be curcd, if his lungs are not too much wasted to make a oure possible. Even cases supposed to be incurable, when friends and physicians have despaired, the use of this Medicine has saved the life of the patient and restored him to perfect health.

Dr. Schenck docs not say that all cases of Pulmonary Consumption are within the reach of mcdicinc, but he emphatically asserts that often when patients have the most alarming symptoms such as a violent cough, creeping chills, night sweats and general debility, even to such a degree that tlicy arc obliged to lie in bod, and when they are given up by their physicians they may still be cured. No medical treatment can create new lungs, but when the lungs are very sadly diseased, and to som extent destroyed, a cure may be effected by Dr. Schcnck's medicines.

Also in Scrofulous Diseases, these medicine are equally efficient. Dr. Schenck has photo graphs of a number of persons who have been nearly covered with running sores, and now all healed up. This shows its purifying properties, which must bo done to heal cavities in the lungs.

In the treatment of Consumption it is of the utmost importance to give vigor and a healthy tone to the system. Hence it is necessary to strengthen the appetite of the patient and improve the digestion. Proper nourishment is required together with such means as will make the food easily digestible. The articles most suitable for the diet of Consumptive patients are designated in Dr. Schenck's Almanacs, which are distributed gratuitously. In general, the most highly nutritious articles are to be preferred, but the digestive organs must be strenghtened in order to make either food or medicine serviceable. This requirement is met by the Seaweed Tonic, and for this purpose it was designa3ed.

When the digestive powers are put in good order the food has its proper effect, the system of the patient is invigorated and the lungs begin to exercise their functions in a nominal and healthy manner. Then the healing powers of the Pulmonic Syrup will completo the cure.

Pulmonary Consumption is almost always complicated with Dyspepsia and Liver Complaint. Schenck's Mandrake Pills intended to remove obstruction from the liver and restore its healthy action. They have all the efficacy which is ascribcd to calomel or "blue mass," and are warranted not to contain a particlo of any mineral poison. These pills curc the most obstinate costiveness, sick headache, piles, bilious affections and all othcrdiseases which arise from a torpid or obstructed condition of the liver. One box of these pills will prove the efficacy of the medicine.

In Consumption the Seaweed Tonic and Mandrake Pills are invaluable auxiliarymedicincs. They relieve the sufferings of the patient and assisst tlie Pulmonic Syrup in effecting a ure. They havo been found useful in advanced stages of Consumption, when the lungs are almost entirely destroyed, and all symptoms according to the judgment of the physicians, indicated speedy death. The lives of patients who were actually in a dying condition have been preserved for months by the use of Schenck's three great remedies.

Dr. Schenck's Almanac containing a full treatise on the various forms of disease, hi® modo of treatment, and general directions how to use his medicine can bo had gratis, or sent by mails by addressing his Principal Office No. 15 North Sixth street Philadelphia Pa.

Price of the Pulmonic Syrup and Seaweed Tonic each $l,f0 per bottle, or $7,50 a halfdozen. Mandrake Pills 25 cents per box.

DR. WHITTIER,

A REGULAR GRADUATE OF MEDICINE, as Diploma at office will show, has been longer engaged in the treatment of Venereral Soyual and Privaee Diseases than any other Physician in St. Louis.

Syphillis, Gonorrhea, Gleet, Stricture, Orchitis, Hernis and Rupture, all Uninary diseases, Syphilitic or Mercurial Affections of the Throat, Skin or Bones, are treated with unparalleled success.

Spermatorrhea, Sexual Debility and Impotency, as the result of self-abuse in youth, sexual cxcess in mature years or other causes, and which produce some of the following effects, as Nocturnal Emissions, Blotches, Debility, Dizziness, Dimnes of sight, Confusion of Ideas, Dvil Forbodings, Aversion to Society of Females, Loss of Memory and Sexual Power, and rendering Marriage improper, are permanently cured.

The Doctor's opportunities in hospital and private practice are unsurpassed in St. Louis or or any other city. Back files of St. Louis

relating to Venereal Diseases and the isastrous and varied consequences of selfabuse, that will be sent to any address in a sealed envelope for two stamps. It contains full symptom lists that will enable those affected to determine the nature of their complaint and give a written statement of their case that will answer almost as well for the purpose of treatment as a personal interview but where it is convenient the Doctor should be consulted personally. Those having friends that may require advice, can supply them with this valuable work by sending their address, with stamp. Thus you can assist the unfortunates without their knowing their benefactor. Certainly no sahiect is of more importance than purity of Dlood and perfect manhood.

It is self-evident that a physician who eonfines himself exclusively to tho study of a certain class of diseases and treats thousands must acquire greater y_ th physicians

of cases every year, must acquire greater skill in that specialty than only general practice. Many physicians, recognizing this fact, introduce patients to the Doctor after reading his Medical Pamphlet. Communifr'
