The steamer Young America left har landing at the foot of "Walnut street, yesterday morning, at five minutes past nine o'clock, having waited four hours beyond the appointed time of departure. On board her were Phillipps and Shannessay, and a party of seventy or eighty "men, including a few boys, earnestly discussing the proposed fistic encounter and epecu* lating as to tho results, Shannessay, being evidently the favorite. There was not much betting and there was an entire absencu of that spirit of lawlessness and rowdyism which is generally a prominent feature of such excursions. The Young

EDITORS JKxrREsa: We were startled on last Tuesday morning by a perusal uf a literary production over the signature of "Teachers' Friend," intended as a critictswon"Toacher's"article in the preceding issue of the EXPRESS, eminaling, no doubt, from some public functionaly occupying the enviable position of a country schoolmaster, and setting himself up as a "model of literary perfection," the great mogul of the English language, the quintesssnce of an unadulterated literary education proposing to open a night school to eo» lighten the benighted Sunday School teacher that he may be able to teach his clasB English Grammar. Oh I how "Teacher's Friend," poor soul, must be moved in behalf of the uneducated and illiterate of our city, who are endeavoring to instruct the youths of the Sunday School, and who have not themselves a classical eduoation. Ob, thou generous .•'friend'' of ignorant humanity, bow shall wa ever repay you for your liberality We hail with joy your generous proposition, knowing It to be a fact that wise men have learned lessons of inestimable value from an educated monkey and, in consideration of this one fact aione, we will avail ourselves of the opportunity of at least an occasional visit to your night school, We do not think your criticism on our article worthy the attention of the "Go-siplng Society,'1 of which, no doubt, you are an honorary member, much less that of a Sabbath School teacher. Consequently we pass it unnoticed, hoping, however, the next time your "Gossiping Society" meets you may be elected Presiident of the Society, to which place you are so admirably adapted on account of your extraordinary educational acquirements and unsurpassable knowledge of sound literature.
