a late

Washington special we

learn that the Postmaster General has roceived a communication from Senator

Rahssy,

now in Europe, in which he

gives an account of his interviews with officers of postal departments in ia relation to changes in our postal treaty with Franoe. Senator Ramsey finds the French officials very difficult to move, but though he has not an assurance of art agreement upon the -basis of tbe propositlon from our Government he does hopo to succeed in perfecting some materal changes in our present arrangement f. the delivery of mails between the two natipni. The Fronch officers demand four rants inland postage in France, while they aro only willing tc allow us two cents for delivering their mails in this country, notwithstanding tbe extent of tertitory is fourteen times afi large as theirs. They seek to make us contribute in this way to the payment of thoir enormous'subsidies to vessels for semimonthly ocean eervicc, for which tho government of France pays $35,000 per round trip. The rate of postage by the existing treaty is three cents, each government paying its own transportation. This treaty ends with the present year. Some' complaint has been made because this matter has been placed in the hands of Sanator

Ramskt,

'Tis coming now, the glorious time Foretold by teres and sung in story— For which, when thinking wis a crime,

To this objection the Post Office Department answers that the service ia a special one, belonging exclusively to the Postmaster General, and has been so regarded for Over twenty years. Mr. Hobbt about that time performed similar service for this country as special agent, and that it is to treated by other governments is instanced in the case of Mr.

Department-from Europe, and distributed for experimeatal purposes among the leading agriculturists of the country.— The President of the State Agricultural College oi Michigan reports the result of their experiments with eight new varities of oats, five of which were introduced 'and distributed by the Commissioner. The particulars of the mode of culture, weight and measure of ihe product, and ratio of straw to grain are given with great precision, but too much in detail for a newspaper article.

The Excelsior, Somerset, White, Schonen( Black Swedish, and Surprise averaged over 64 bushels per acre, the Somerset yielding a tri fie over 64 bushels, and the

Whito Schonen 62i, weighing 37J pounds The average product ol the five varieties introduced by the department is 64A bushels per acre, weight 37 pound per bushels. Of the throe varieties introduced by private enterprise, (the Norway, Prince Edward's Island, and Brooks,) the average yield was 55J bushels weight 31 pounds. When it is considered that the aggrogate oat crop of the United States excceds 175,000,000 bushols, and that the product of the old varieties has ranged from onlv 25 to 35 bushels per acre, the importance of this introduction of more productive sorts is obvioas. Few crops require more frequent changes of seed than the oat, which soon deteriorates. It is tho intention of tho Department to im port and distribute extensively, this win tsr, these varieues that have proved the moat productive and valuable the past year.

MTTR0LG0Y BE-WRITTBPf. The Story of Hercules. BT THE "FAT COUTBIBUTOB'

From the Cincinnati Times.] Hercules was the son of Jupiter and Alemena, and the strongest man of his time. Tbe Germane call him Herr Cu'es and claim him for a Dutchman. Aleme na, his mother, being a daughter Earth, Juno (Mrs. Jupiter) was natural ly bostllo to ber offspring. She declared against Hercules from his birth. She two serpents to destroy him as be lay io his cradle, but

ing known in thore days Hercules stood in no fear of "snakes," so instead of do sing himself with whisky and valerian to drive them away, he just strangled them That wa$ his style Their stuffed hides may be found in any well represented museum to this day. He was, however, by the art of Juno, rendered subjfet Eurystbeui', proprietor of a Combined Circus and Menagerie, and compelled to perform all hi* commands Eurystbeus enjoined upon him a succession of desperate adventure, which are called the twelvo "Labors of Hercules." The first was a fight with the Norman lion. In handling wild animals, Herr Culea could beat Herr Dresbacb. He itrangled the Hon with own hands, nono of the oth

lion on his shoulders, but Eurystbeus was

frightened at the sight of it, and at this proof of the prodigious strength of Hercules, that ho ordered him to tend ac counts hi* exploits by telegraph in fu ture. ~f

His next labor was carving tbe Hydra a motieUir that ravaged the country of Argo, and dwelt in a swamp near the well of Amymone. Tbe Hydra used to go to the well for water to put with his gin, (ho lived on

Hydra-gin,)

His next step in the labor movement was the cloaniog of the Augean stables. Augeas, King of Elis, had a herd of three thousand oxen, whose stalls had not been cleaned for thirty years. The smell was so bad that Delhi, Miami and Storrs townships held indignation meetings and threatened to tear the stable down. Hercules brought Deercreek through them and cleaned them-thoroughly in one day, though the hydrant water tasted a little queerish for a week or more.

His next labor was of a more delicate nature. Admeta, the daughter of Eurystheus, (who rode a very gojd one-horse act) longed to obtain the girdle of Hippolyta, queen of the Amsz ins, to wear in the circus. She thought it would lay over any champion belt in the country. Eurysiheus ordered Hercules to go and get it. The Amazons were a nation of women, very warlike, addicted to breeches and the ballot. It was* their custom to bring up only the female children, the boys being either put to death or forced to work.on newspapers, which kilted them off in a little white anyhow. After various adventures he reached tbe country of the Amazons, on the Amazon nver. Hip-

jjjp for Hippolyta. Hercules made

but Juno, assuming the attire of Mrs. Dr. Walker, went and persuaded the other advocates of women's rights that the strangers were carrying off their queen.

They

instantly armed and came down to the five o'clock mail boat, on which the men bad embarked, in great numbers. Hercules and Hippolyta were taking a parting drink in the Captain's room. Seeing tbe crowd of Amazons on the landing, and hearing tbe tumult, Herca lee thought Hippolyta had acted^treacherously, so be slew her, and taking her girdle, sailed homeward, the boat leaving precisely on time.

Then Eurystbeus sent him to bring the oxen of Geryon, a monster with three bodies and very little soul. He lived in the Far "West, and when Hercules in searching him arrived at the frontiers of Lybia and Europe, be rent a mountain in twain and left half on each side, forming the Straits of Gibraltar. The oxen were guarded by tbe giant Eurytion and his two-head-ed dog but Hercules killed the giant, knocked the dog on his respective heads, and brought the oxen in safety to Eu rystheus. He took tbe first premium on them at the noxt county fair.- They were a good thing to have, for ifEurystheus got broke in going against the "bank," he could raise

& steak on

one of tbpm any

time. The most difficult labor o£ all was getting tbe golden apples of Hesperides, for Hercules did not know where to find them. They were a choice variety of applea_i«golden sweets," perhaps—which Juno had received at her wedding from the Goddeas of tbe Earth, and which the had intrusted to^the keeping of the daughters of Hesperis, ably assisted by a watchful dragoon. After vorioua adven tures Hercules arrived at Mount Atlas in Africa—(Geography and Atlas had been introduced into Africa even at that early day). Atlas was one of the Titons who got a

tight on

ored to "clean out" the gods. But these

tight-nns

find tbe apples and bring them to him. Atlas consented to go, if Hercules would bear up the heavens while he was gone, which he did, having borne up under almost everything under tbe heavens. Atlas found Hesperides on an isle of brightness and glory, floating in the western sky. Their home was on the settin' sun I He got tbe apples, pretending that he wanted to exhibit them at the Pomological fair, and brought them to Hercules.— Then he resumed his exercise with the health lift, and Hercules returned with the apples to Eurystheus, who exhibited them in one of his side-shows.

Another exploit of his was to vanquish the champion wrestler of his time, Aniteus, son of Terra, a giant and a terrible thrower. He was invincible as long as he remained "on earth," so Hercules held him up at arm's length with one hand and strangled him. A newspaper report of the affair was beaded "Death {in the Air." Death for Want of Air would have been more appropriate. Other exploits did Hercules accomplish, but the above were tbe most talked about at tbe time. After completing his twelve labors (laboring only eight hours each day),they gave Hercules a complimentary benefit, where he was assisted in giving exhibitions of strength, boxing, ,&cn by Dr Winsbip, Jem Mace, Mike McCoole and O' Baldwin.

Tbe death of Hercules was a very melancholy one. His wife, Dejanira, put a magic powder on his robe as a love spell, in order to make him constant to her, ias he hadn't beon constant to any thing else. The apothecary who prepared the powder made a mistake, however, and put cow-itch in it. Tbe effect was terrible, as may be supposed. When Mrs. Hercules found what she had done she went and hung berself. Hercules in despair hurled himself into the midst of a bonfire at a political meeting that was being held in his ward, and perished among the blazing tar-barrels. Jupiter said the boy should have a chanc4, so he enveloped him in a cloud and took him up in a fourhorse omnibus to dwell among the stars
