RAILROADS.
John Ingle Jr., President of the E & 0. R. being present, was invited to address the Council. He said in brief that misapprehensions and misunderstandings have had a tendency to retard the building of the Danville road. He sketched the origin and history of the E. & C. R- R-i and his own connection with the same hi* efforts during the past two years to make a great road of it, or to place it in the line of a great route from Chicago to Nashville liberal subscriptions had bsen made along tbe line, but those having the Danville road in hand were waiting tbe expected subscription from this city. The large benefits to be dorived from tko cjtnplellon of this line were pertinently and forcibly stated. He contended with great earnestness that he bad in no particular, in tho management of tho E. & 0. R. R, workod to the interest of Evansville and prejudiced those of Terre Haute.
Mr. Dowling offered the following WIIKRBAS, There appears to be an active interest manifested in Greene c:uaty, and in other intermediate quarters, fivorable to the building of the proposed Rail Road from Terre Haute to Bloomfield and Worlhington, or as tho line may be finally located in Greene.county

Mr. Cox offered the following, which was concurred in:
Resolved
That tbe petition of Mr. TV.
Naylor, to erect a stairway on the outside of bis building on the Northeast corner of 4th and Ohio streets, be granted, width not exceeding three feet, under tbe Superintendence of the City Engineer.
On motion of Mr. Cox, the Mayor was authorized to rent two rooms over Shannon's Bank for police headquarters.
Mr. Dowling presented an ordinance providing that the unnamed street running west from tbe end of Fine street, at Seventh street, along the south side of tbe St. Louis depot, to Market street, be named Fine street, and that said ordi I nance be in force from and after its pub-
point where tbe bulk of the assessment allowing and referring sundry and collections are made, and which u'
•asily accessible by rail from all parts of
tbe District. In this connection it may be proper to state that tbe rumor that the Terre Haute Postofflce is to be removed to Macksville has not^tbfleMt foundation. Mr. Burnett indignantly denies that be has ever contemplated such a removal. While he is fully awaro that coal is cheaper in Macksville than in Terre Haute, he sees the importance of (.ffording the best accommodations to the public and does not permit his personal interests or inclinations to control bis official acts to the detriment bf the portal service.
