THE GREAT ST. LOUIS FAIB.—From an advertisement elsewhere in our paper it will be seen that the Indianapolis & St. Louis Railroad will oarry passengers to lh^ St. Louis Fair at half-fare rates—$7,50 for the round trip. We have no hesitation in saying that it will bo the grandest fail ever held In this country, and every cititen that can should avail himself of th» present opportunity of cheap fare and witness the great sights.
MAYOR COUHT.—First came yesterday morning, John Sullivan, a St. LouiB bummer, quite a genteel looking fellow, arrestod for vagrancy. Ha begged the Mayor to given him fifteen minutes to cross the bridge and got out of town.
Granted. Two disorderlies, two visitors and one family fracas made up the remainder ol yesterday's docket.
THS extent to which falso hair is now worn by women of all ranks in life, here as well as abroad, is almost beyond bolief. A glance in at any hair.droaser't window will show us in what an infinite variuty of ways it is employ od to ornament the shop girl as well as the fashion?, ablo belle, the grisetleas well ns tbogreai lady "'Obsererve," says a Fronch journalist, the mob of quoer things, and especially tho clustering, flowing ringlots, sometimes interwoven with fiower3, waiting only to be placed on lh9 back cf tht bead in order, perhaps, 10 awaken in a young male heart ttomost tonderof emotions. False hair must occasionally help a man to lovo, if pretty boots have, as we know, led to matrimony. What a tremendous trade must bo done in dead hair."' Thu journalist adds that 'if all tho fahe hair worn by the Parisian ladies werecollected in tho Place Vendome and piled up, it would reach to the top of the Napoleon column.
TUB STATIC FAIR.—By yesterday's Indianapolis Sentinel we learn that the Sev. entesuth Indiana State Fair, which commenced yesterday, starts out with promise of much greater success than any previous exhibition has ever enjoyed. The importance of these annual displays is gradually becoming appreciated by the people, and tho liberal and enterprising management of the Board of Agriculture has no much to popularize tbem. Thig is particularly noticeable this year, since the system of charging entry fees ha8 beer- done away with, and by tho reduc. tion of premiums for trotting, no particu. lar feature of the fair attracts attention to the exclusion of others. The Board have spared no pains in fitting up the grounds, and under the direction of Mr. Sullivan, the Superintendent, they bave been substantially improved in various ways.
Tle number of entries made up to yesterday morning is unequaled in the hiatory of our fairs, and the letters requesting room, or notifying the Secretary
that articles would be exhibited, indicate that the number made will be greatly -in excess of any previous exhibition. Now, all that is wanted to make this fair the greatest and most successful of all the State fairs is good weather. That assured, the result is as certain as if it were a thing of the past.
A good many exhibitors from a distance had already arrived previous to yesterday morning, and quite a number of pieces of machinery, and other articles together with horses, sheep, hogs and cattie have been taken to the grounds. The following is the official proeramme for the week, which such of our readers as intend visiting the fair will do well to cut out and preserve:

MESSRS. EDITORS:—We yesterday list *ned with a great deal of pleasure to the iddress of Hon. Barnabas C. '.Hobbs, at Dowling's Hall, as it gave evidence of borough investigation of the History of the Bible yet in somo particulars, as far as our reading is concerned, hi* state tnonts do not fully agree in many points, with those of others, who have made criti :al examinations on these subjects.
Among other assertions made by him was the. statement that the ancient Baby lonians worshiped idols. In the August uumber of tho Atlantic Monthly is a very »ble article entitled "Zoroaster and the Zend Avesta," in which the writer clearly proves, from the ancient writings of the Babylonians, that they did not worship idols—that they had a clear and distinct belief in one Supremo Intelligence that created, overruled and controlled things that this Supreme Ruler created two intelligences, each supreme in limited degree, yet subject to the highest Supreme. One of good—tho other evil—that these two would contend for the mastery of the world—but finally— the good would overcome the evil, &c.
It also stated that roaiter was at tb Very least a cotemporay of Moses, while other distinguished oriental scholars make him cotemporary with Abraham, &c. The aame writer hold the view, that previous to the Babylonish captivity tbe Hebrews wero constantly falling back from tbe worship of the "one only living and true God" into the worship of idols, but bavin been taken captive by these people, tbey found another nation, who had a belisf one supremo being, and as a consequence, after their return to Jerusalem from that captivity they never returned to the worship of falso gods.
Also that from the Babylonians, tbey first imbibed tli'i notions of a futurestate -hell &c., as is helJ by the churches of the present day—although the Bablylo oians telievo that all would finally be redeomed from this torment, wlnn tho supreme good should finally overcome tho spirit of evil.
Now it is a well known fact, udmitted I beliovo by somi of tho most learned commentators on tho Bible, as well as the most intolligont pastors of our churches, "that in the Old Testament the mosi profound silence is observed in regard to tho statoofthe deceased, their joy and sorrows, happiness or misery." I would montion Dr. Campbell, Dr. John, Dr. Allen, President of Bow Join College, Ac., &c., and a friond informs me he heard Dr. Durbin, an eminent member of tbe M. E. Church, maintain the same doctrine. I would also state that I heard tho same uffirmed by the Rev. gentlemen (I havo forgoiten his name) who filled ho pulpit f«r R»v. T. M. Martin, of the P. E. Church, during his absence last year in the Wost. After a clear and learned review of the doctrines held by roaster as laid down in the Zend Avesta and other ancient writings of the Persians, the writer sums up tbe whole matter in these words: "Christians must givo up talking about Christianity asonly a means of e-caping a future hell, and arriving at a future hnaven. They must show now more than ever, that by a crime of living and truthful hearts, God comes here, immortality begins here, and heaven lies about us. R"
