Risley and left for other parts. Some weeks after, when tho excitement in the neighborhood had been allayed, and the affair almost forgotten, at alone and unfrequented part of Honey Creek, just low where tho Lockport road crosses it,
Risley was seen standing on the bank looking into the water. The fact becoming noised about, the sa&rcfi was renewed, and tho body found at the very place where Risley was seen, looking into the water. It had been sunk by attaching a bag of rocks to his neck. An examination of the body revealed a bullet hole through lh9 head and the front of the skull was broken and sunk in, as i| from the effect of a heavy blow.
Risley, Moses Holmes and two others were arrested on suspicion. Risley and Holmes were tried, on a change of venue, in Pulnam county. Tho first named was sent to the penitentiary for life. Holmes was acquitted, and is now residing we believe in Louisville, Kentucky.
On the trial of the latter, Risley was brought up from the penitentiary, and testified that be was acquainted with Lucas, knew him about four years and knew his wife before ho wss married lived about three miles from wboro they lived and about ihree miles from Centreville. Started from therewith Lucas on the 13th. We had traced, I was to give him $1,505 for the land. He gave tho number of iicres of the land and the torms of the trade—said he refused to take the dsed when Lucas returned wilh it from Terro El auto aud had it altered.
Went Thursday evening after shadeod was acknowledged was not satisfied with il WHS afraid it was not right and concluod I would go to town and have it examined bffirfe I paid the money. Wemade arrangements to c° and we started about dark, and staid there until about midnight when we startod to Terre Hauto. It was about 8 o'clock when wo left Centreville, went by Esq. Pearson's, some distance out of the road, and then went toThomas Taylor's stopped there a short time and then went on lo my hcu'se we drove slow. My family were in bed put the horse in the stable. My wife got up and opened the door and went back to bed. I went in the kitchen and sent somotbingto eat, when wo ate and talked for some time. I asked Lucas for tho deed be gave it to mo and I looked over it two or three times.
My wife and I talked about it and she said it was unnecessary to go to Terre Haute. I then said that we would go to Taylor Pearson's in the morning and if he said it was all right I would pay him the monev. Lucas then said he wanted togoto town that his wife said he should
put the money in bank, and we started on to town about 12 or 1 o'clock that night. We went from my house to tho Bono road wo drove slow and got to strawberry bill about five o'clock in the morning croR9od under on the bridge by D. Donbam's. Near the Female College, on Sixth street we parted there
wont to my brother-in-law's, Charley Moore, and he (Lucas) said that he would go to his brother's don know where he wont.
We met again near the Post Ofnce. 1 told Charley Moore that

DEATH OF JOHN BISLKT—HK COKFKSSKS THE MURDER OF LUCAS.—From the Louisville Courier-Journal wt learn that John Risley, who went to the Southern Penitentiary frem this county under a life sentence, for tho murder of a man named Lucasr died on Thursday night last of inflammation of the bowels. A short time before he died he confessed that ho was guilty of the crime. Thu3 has a deep mystery baen cleared away. Risley was convicted on purely circumstantial evidence, and in the minds of many of our people there was a very grave doubt of his guilt. Ho has since his incarceration and up to tbe time of this confession stoutly proclaimed bis innocence.
It will be rembered that Risley bought a farm from Lucas, and late one evening
had tho deed
to tho land and told him that Lucas and I had traded. I was pretty well satisfied with the doed but wanted to show it to a lawyer. Showed it to a school teacher, a lamo man, who said it was agood doed. Lucas and mo went to the Union House and ihero

Mrs. Baker talked of going with us to Terre Haute with two of her children, but finally declined to do^ so, she said that one of her children WHS sick. I was willing for her to go with us.— Risley tried to explain why ho was on the creek near whore tho body of Lucas lay in the creek, but a short time beforo it was found, and »'s) why ho was measuring the depth of the creek before Lucas WHS killod. He was thoroughly cross-ex-arained, but nothing in addition lo the main I'-icts above detailed, could be drawn from him.
