tells the story which we

publish below. It illustrates again the disposition of the people to allow themsolves to bo swindled and tho m#re transparent the sell, the more likely some men are to bite at it. Tho victims, too, are generally that class of persons who never Tbave any money for ordinary purposes. We shall doubtless hear of the samo swindlo being perpetrated at other points in tbe State, since, unfortunately, vorv many persons do not read the papers. He may possibly "light" in this city, and that our roaders may be on their guard, wo givo tho Timei statement of the transaction:

A sharper played a nice gatno at our recent f»ir, by which a good many good people who should have known better, were taken in and "done" out of their money so easy that they thomselves havo not yet got done laughing over it. A respectable looking Aminadab Sleek drovo into the midst of tbe thickest crowd ou the ground in a buggy, containing beside himself sjhigh b:x. 'Stoppingdeliberately in the middle of the crowd, ho got up, looked arond calmly, and said: "Gentlemen, I have a wager with a friend that I can give away so much money, in a certain way, in a certain time. Now, every man who has a dimo let him band it up and I'll give him a dollar for it. Or let every man who has a dollar hand it up, and I'll givehim $5 for it—all good monoy. It there is a dollar of it bogus, you can have mo arrested." Up went the dimes ttnd dollars in a perfect cloud, and each man got back a good one or a five dollar bill. Finally the chap declared ho had won hi3 wager, and shut down" on that part of tho performance. He then announced that he had another wager that he could give away so much money and jewelry together in such a length of time. 'Now hand up your $3s, and I'll give you back two or throe timai the amount of money and tho jjewelry. in an envelope, but you must agree ^t looltiiPU tell your friend! what tfce^ewelry is tril you get off the ground." Every fist for half a mile round had a in it shaking it at the chap He would pick up a bill out of bis box and pretend to poko it into thacnvelope^rako in the$5,and so on to the next bumpkin. After gatheiing in his harvest in this way, the chap declared his wager won, shut up shop and drove rapidly awn}-. Every man retired to a secret place and opened liis envelope to take out his money

On Thursday

evening about six o'clock, on Otter Creok prairie, a lad named Daniel Barnes, was thrown from a horse and received such internal injuries as to cause death in less than an hour.

A letieb from Hon. John Ingle, Jr., which we publish to-day, shows that he did not go to England for the purpose of buying railroad iron, as we announced sometime ago on the authority of an Evansville paper.

his jewelry. Each one found about five cents worth of brass and a dimo in their envelope—"only that and nothing more." Tho crowd had been done out ot $500 or $60Q over and above what he first gave away. What is very curious about the matter is, that, though the shrewd lellow gave away hundreds of pieces of brass, not a man can be found in Delaware county who got a peice of "that" jewelry! la fact it is about as useless to ask

Who got the jewelry?" as it is to reiterate "Who got the ten thousand dollars?" Sold again, and got the cash on the nail! ..
