LAYING CORNER STONE.—On
tho oration.
THE COUNTY FAIR,
next
Sunday the corner stone of the new Providence Hospital will be laid. All tho citizens are cordially invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at 3J o'clock Sunday afternoon. Rev. F. F. O'Reilly, from St. Louis, will deliver
WHEN a crowded street car is stopped for a pa?senger, starting again is often very hard work for the horses. Somebody has contrivod a method of doing away with this loss of force. He connects a spring with tho wheels and brake in such a way as to coil up the spring in the process of stopping tho car then, by releasing this spring at the proper moment, its compressed elasticity comes to
the aid of the horses and sends tho car on its way immediately, at almost Us former
speed.
learn that the gentlemon who purchased the stock in the Great Western Plank Road, formerly the old National road, have put the same in good repair as far oast as tho bridgo over Lost Creek a distance of about four and a half railes^east of the city. Wo are informed that the balanco of the road east to the Clay county lino will be vacated, so that the township authorities may havo an opportunity to keep the same in repair.
It is the intention of the gentlemen now comprising the company to make a first class road of the Western four and a half miles, and to keop It in good condition at
all times. Thoy are now collecting toll at the gate two and a half miles oast of the city, and we learn they will soon erect a gato nesr the corporation line. Thoy will not do tliis until the Fair is ovor, not wishing to charge citizens toll for visiting tho Fair. No right thinking man ol.jects to paying reasonable toll on a good road.
Tho citizens living on our principal roads leading from the city should organize and not only put their respective road) in good repair, but arrango so the same may contintft so for a long time.
THE railroad election held in Fountain county, on Tuesday of last week, resulted in a .majority of seven hundred votes in favor of the appropriation. The appropriation voted amounts to $122,800 —$98,800 of which, is to aid in the construction of a road from Attica to our county line, and the residue, $34,000 is to aid the road now building trom Crawfordsville to Covington. Will tho people of Parke, on the 13th proximo, again refuse to vote the tax asked, to meet our friends of Fountain at the county line?— The vote then to be gi?en, decided the question, whether in the future we are to rank with our sister counties, or whether vith all our undeveloped resources, we are to remain tributary to other localities less favored by nature. Never was there a more favorable opportunity offered to any people to secure ample railroad facilities than are now presontod to the people of Parke. Let the friends of appropriation up and doing.—Sockviile Repitb(icanbe

FIELD CROPS AND FARMS. "Si We give below the leport of the committee on field crops and farms, as follows: -i
On the 22d aod 24th of June last we examinod the fields of wheat and meadows, also took a look at ten farms entered for the Society's premium.
For Paddock & JJfarkle's premium for wbeat, six ten-acre" fields were entered by tbc following persons: Cory Barbour, George Clem, Joshua, T. Crandel, Jacob Ryman, Jauws A. Gibson, John J. Ferrel. Upon a close examination we decided that Cory Barbour's was the best. It has since beon threshed. The exsct amount of ground was 9| acres and the yield was by measure 416 bushel, an average of 42$ bushels per acre—by weight 393 bushels, an average of 40$ bushels por acre.
For tho 5 acres of meadow we found 7 entries, Waller L. Dickerson, Cory Barbour, George ,Sanky, Franklin Sanky, John Jackso', \. B. Pegg, Harvey Jackson. The |«-eraium was awarded to John Jackson.
Ten entries were made for-the premium on farms as follows: Hiram Smith, John Weir, Jacob Ryman Oscar Soules, A. B. Pegg, H. D. Scott, John. J. Ferrel, Cory Barbour, George Sanky, Jos. Gilbert. On the 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th of September we re-examined the farms and found it difficult to decide between the five best. The decision was finally given in favor of the farm of George Sanky.
Five entries were made for the premium on acre of potatoes, by Jacob Ryman, Julian Farlan, Hiram Smith, John Jackson, H. D. Scott. The award was made to H. D. Scott.
For fiudnut & Co's. Premium on hominy corn, entries were made by Cory Barbour, Samuel Crandel, Jacob Ryman. The award was made to Samuel Crandel.
For McGregor's premhtmpn yellow corq, two entries were made, by John. I Weir and John J. Perrell, The award

The Board of Trustees have elected an able Faculty, and have made provision for the immediate opening of the Model Schools and Practice or Training Schools
On account of the lateness of the season at which the building and furniture will be in readiness, the Board have decided to make the first term, beginning Novem ber 24th, a short term of four weeks, and to make of it a Normal Institute, closing just before the Christmas holidays, to allow the first full term to begin the first week in January ,and continue three
months.1 The Board of Trustees indulge the hope that a large number of young men and young ladies will avail themselves of the advantages'to be derived frcm Normal School Instruction at tho very opening of this important Institution, and that every county in the State may be represented an the roll of students during the first year of its history.
For further information concerning details, address Prof. J. M. Olcott, Secretary ot the Board of Trustees and member of the Faculty.

am now reeeiving altogether the finest as well as the largest stock of the best Pianos, the Silver Tongue Organs and Melodeons, together with every variety of small musical instruments, yet opened in this city. In my muBic trade in this city, I have so far been successful as to command a patronage ex tending for hundreds of miles in all di. ructions from Terre Haute, thus making it a certainty that purchasers, by visiting the Palace of Music when needing anything in the musical line, will meet inducements second to no other establishment East or West.
