body had predicted that because no encouragement had been given to horseracing or "agricultural horse-trots, the fur must necessarily be a failure. Add to this the intolerable weather which prevailed op to noon yesterday, and the most of our readers will be surpised to leatn that the fair is a success. The exhibition of articles is better than any of tbe county fairs which have preceded this, and entries last evening were being made with great rapidity. Over five handred entries have been made, and in view of the fact that the weather has set every thing back a full day, the Director* have concluded to

Tho show of stock, in tho way of horses, cattle and hogs is said to be the best of any fair ever hold in this county.

Yesterday afternoon the contest for the velocipede premiums occurred. For fast riding, the premium was dollars Four entries were made, viz: Will Hoddy, Harry Sherburne,, Alex. Solomon and Charley Johns«n. Hoddy won the first two heats, in 6:00 and 6:14. The other boys came out about one hundred yards behind each time, in the order named. On the second heat a man named Doming, ran on foot against the veloci pedes, for a purse .of five dollars. He took the lead and kept it until about twothirds the way around, when Hoddy passed him and came out about fifty yards ahead. For tbe most skillful management of the bicycle the premium of ten dollars was awarded to Harry Sherburne.

The fair will begin in earnest to day. In addition to the regular programme given below we learn a race will occur between Doming on foot and Hoddy on the velocipede, and Chief Engineer i&ll will exercise one of the steam fire engines: Trains will be run to and from 'bo fair grounds, to-day and to morrow, as noticed elsewhere.

Tbe several halls lart everiTng"had not been fully arranged, but had so far advanced as to present an excellent showing.

Power and Mechanical Hall has a good variety of plows, reapers, mowers, drills, stump pullers, carriages, etc., including ten varieties of superbly finished plows, from Philip Newbart, and two very fine carriages from Wildy, Thomas & Co.

In Farm Products and Vegetable^H»1 there is a splendid' collection of this season's bountiful growth of vegetation in the way of potatoes, corn, wheat, oats pumpkins, squashes, beets, tomatoes, onions, etc. Some of these articles rfre of enormous size.

Floral Hall has a mixtura, and a moat tempting array. Heinl Brothers, as usual, occupy the Central pyramid- with" achoice collection of flowers and plants. The four wings, running out, aro filled with choice varieties of apples, pears, pesches, grapes," jellies, preserves, bread cakes, and butter, such as you seldom get from your grocer. It is gratifying to learn that good butter -is made in this county, if it doesn't come to town. The display of grape?, pears and apples is ex traordinarily good. Of apples, S. Frank lin has thirty varieties, and Wm. Patrick forty varieties. J. W. Ragan, of Clayton, contributes some choice varieties of fruit. Mrs. Pegg has an attractive display of jellies and canned fruit?.
