.ffERBB HAUTE, W13

Monday Morning, Sept. 13th,

ThkXow* Conference has gone in favor or lay delegation by the following vote: For, 31706 votes against, 1,920 votes, making a majority of 9,780.

Cincihhatianb are remonstrating against the passage of a resolution now pending before the School Board of that cily, the object" of which is to exclude tho Bible from the public Bchoole,

Ths nomination, by the Republicans of Minnesota of Judge Austin, for Governor, is pronounced the very etongest election that could have been made, and il is predicted that under the Judge's leadership the Bepublicans will sweep the Slalr almost without resistance^

The Cincinnati Chronicle perceives some evidences of an attempt among the Democracy ef Tennessee to muster virtue enough to put through the Fifteenth Amendment, as proposed during the canvass. It is argued, correctly enough, that this amendment makes matters no worse in Tennessee, or other States of the South, but only puts Northern States on au equality with them as to the principle of negro suffrage. A desire merely to oil go Northern Democrats by refusing ratify does not seem to have a place hearts. Now-a-days, they do not tuiok their former allies amount to much.

The Chicago Republican mentions, as :newhftt straDgc, tho fact that of the ts/on Republican Senators who voted lint the impoaebment of Andbew aNSO», but two remain unscathed by hand of deatb, or by political, or other jr. ,fortune. Tbese two ^|are—Judge 'I cmBULL, of Illinois, nnd Senator Koss,

Kansas. HbsdMUon, of Missouri, and Tan Winjllb, of West Virginia, have 1 on superseded. PoWLHB, ot Tennessoe, 1 have to give plhce to Andt himself o- some other man, Fksskndeit, oi J: vine, has Just died. GRIMES, of Iowa, is invalid and has resigned. As the groat pcot says, "So runs the world away.'.

TUB Philadelphia Press, endorses a -y important movement that has been inaugurated in "Western Virginia, by tho iVhtjellng Intelligencer, against any further proscription and disfranchisement of tho former rebels. Tho latter paper slates that whatever party gains or holds ascendancy in "West Virginia threo or fi.-ur years hence will do to because it stands on a platform that banishes all civil and political inequalities, and that tho Republican party is now in a situation to advance and occupy the winning position. The thing to be avoided in that Slate is a division, among the Republicans"Whatever they do should be done among themselves, in fair, open convention, as iu Alabama, whero the whole population enjoys the right of suffrage, and those only are disfranchised who are disfranchised by the fourteenth amendment. Any other course —like that in Tennessee, where the Republican quarrel is simply to restore the State to the old rebels— would be the organization of the Democratic party, and the transfer of "West Virginia to the men who prepare 1 and «. 'J. .5*' \JX precipitated the war.

There soems to "be a disposition on the part of a large proportion of the press of the country—including many Republican journals, to grumble at the President's absence from the Capital The sharp pens of Washington correspondents, in the absenseof more inviting matter, have been probing this subject until one would suppose* their owners would be glad to desist from sheer exhaustion. Not so, however. The changes are rung every morning, and the charge Is renewed every evening, apparently with infinite satisfaction.

Occasionally a correspondent, with some lingering sense of decency, some perception of truth and propriety, takes the opposite tack, and does justice to the motiveB and acts of the Chiof Magictrate. We have before us a letter to a Cincinnati daily, in which it is suggested that if the grumblers throughout the country knew how the President is hounded, while in Washington, for purposes purely personal to those who besiege him, and for no public good whatever, his absence would be regarded as a public blessing, even If continued for weeks tu come.

Nothing of public interest suffers everything moves along in barmonr, and prosperously, because order has been fully hugurated in the whoio Government, 1 it is run for tho public not private inst, and run by la to, and not by the r.bim or caprice of any man or set ol -•.-..on who assume to set themselves above :ie law. It may bo said in reply, "Il oad to be absent a month, wby not be'.to be constantly absent?" Because tbero are times whon affairs press upon' Uio President's attontion, and although i- en thun he will be besot with bangers on, he must endure it as beet ho can, it still dispatch the legitimate public business. He is at the capital every week. alls his Cabinet together, and disposes of ercrythingdemanding attontion, and the

but evidence that ho permits no public' interest to suffer is found in the fact that ersrythfng moves along prosperously— .ver more so. The President has an iron constitution, and is capable of great endurance but, stout as be is, be can net «2dure everythit'g: and past experience in his high office hss shown that it can break down the stoutest man. Lot us not murder our President: spore him if possible. The country has much use for him yet.

Mound Builder Jn the, Bopkf Mountains. An account was recently given of the pening of an ancient mound in Boathem Utah, similiar to Uio«e of the Mississippi Valley, in which were found relics of the unknown buiklaraiodicaUog much artistic skill. It was stated that this was the first evidence found of the existence of the Mound Builders west of th# Rocky Mountains. We are now able to announce, for the .first time, as we suppose the discovery of similar mounds, evidently built by the same race, high up on the Rocky Mountains. The discovery was made by Mr. C. A. Dean, of Denver, whi at work on a Government survey, in the mountains, a few weeks since, lie found upon the extreme summit of the snowy ran^e tlructures of atone evidently of ancient origin, and hitherto unknown or unnoticed. Opposite to and also north of the head of South Bowlder Creek, and on the summit of the range. il Mr. Dean and his party observed large numbers of the granite rocks, many of them aa large as two men could lift, in a position that could not have boen the result of chance. They nad evidently been placed upright in a line, conforming to the dividing ridge, and frequently oxtending unbroken line for one or twojhundrad yards. Many of the stones have fallen over and some are leaning, while others retain thoir upright position. In two places connettwl with this line are mcunds of stone, loosely laid up, about two feet in hight, and embracing a circular urea of about ten feet in diameter.

The stones were evidently collected on the spot, a3 the surfaca is cleared for a space of several yards around the structures. These lines and mounds of stone bear every mark of extreme antiquity, as tie disintegrated granite has accumulated 13 a considerable depth at their base, and 130 roeks ia the rooands are moss grown The feature more particularly identityiog jese structures with those of the Mound Builders elsewhere, is that they present at nervals projections pointing

ward. We are thufc particular in tho dcscrip .ion of the Rocky Mountain mounds, which are extraordinary in position, if not :i cbaracter in the hope that-antiquarians ligitlng our Territory maybe induced to iSamine them. It would not involve ouch labor to open them, and possibly tliey cover relics that may add something i.) our small stock of knowledge of thoaucent race who constructed these and similar works ail over the continent. These walls and mounds are situated 3.000 feet above the timber line It is, therefor hardly supposable that tbey were built for altars of sacrifice. They wero not large enough for shelter or defenEo. The more probable supposition ia that, Hke tho Urger mounds elsewhere, they were places cf sepulture' and perhaps also at the same time historical mamorials, pointing with their stone fingers in the direction of the country from which the, builders or tbeir ancestors migrated. The throe mounds may mark the resting places of those who for some distincii^n, were buried as near tn heaven as possible.—Rocky Mountain Ntios,

HARK TWAIN AND THE INDIANS.

His Experience at Saratoga with tbe Noble Ket Man-lie Finds that They Come from limerick, and is Thrown

Over Horseshoe Fall. Mark Twain has boen among the "Indians" at Saratoga with queer results After ghing an account of interviewing a squaw and a full grown warrior, with dissatisfaction, he says:

I made one nfor$ attempt to fraternize with them, aud only one. I came upon a camp of them gathered ia the shade of agreattreo, making wampum and moccasins, and addressed them in the language of friendship "Noble Red Men, Braves, Grand Sachems, War-Chiefs, Squaws and High*you-Muck-a*Mucks, tbe pale face from the land of the setting sun greets you! You Benoficent Polecat—you Davourer of Mountains —you, Roaring-Thundergust— ycu, Bully-boye-with-a-Glas-Eye—thepale face from beyond the great waters greets you all 1 "War and pestilence have .thinned your ranks and destroyed your once proud nation. Poker, a Beven up, and a vain modern expense for soap, unknown to your glorious ancestors, have depleted your purses Appropriating in your simplicity the property of others, has gotten you into trouble. Misrepresenting facts, in your sinless innocence, has damaged your reputation with the soulless usurper. Trading for forty-rod whisky, to enable you to get drunk and happy and tomahawk your families, has played the everlasting mischief with the picturesque pomp of your dross, and here jou are, in the broad light of tho nineteenth century, gotten up like the ragtag and bobtail of the purlieus of New York! For shame I Remember your ancestors! Recall their mighty deeds I Remember Uncas I—and Red Jacket I—and Ble-in-tbe-Day I—and Horaco Greoley! Emulate their achievements! Unfurl yourselves under my banner, noble savages, illustrious guttersnipes—" "Down wid him I" '"Scoop tho Wagyard!" "Hang him 1" "Burn him ."Dhrownd him

It was the quickest operation that ever was. I simply saw a sudden flash in tbe air of clubs, brickbats, fists, bead baskets and moccasins—a single flash, nnd they all appeared to hit me at once, and no two of them in tho same place. In the next instant the eutire tribe was upon me. Tbey tore all the clothes off me, they broke my arms and legs, tbey gave me a thump that dented the top of my head, till it would hold coffee like a saucer and to crown their disgrace!ul proceedings and add insult to injury, they throw me over Horseshoe Fall, and I got wet.

About ninety or a hundred feet from the top, the remains of my vest caught on a projecting rock, and I whs almosf. drowned before I could get loose. I finally fell, and brought up in a world of whit« foam at tbe foot of the Fall, whoso celled and bubbly masses towered up several inches above my head. Of course I got into the oddy. I Sailed round and round in it forty-four times— chasing a chip and gaining on it—each round trip half a mile—reaching for tho-samebu»h on tho bank fony-foar.times, and just exactly missing it by a hair's breadih every timet. At last a man walked down and sat down close to that bush, and put pipe in bis mouth, and lit a match, and followed mo wiih one eye and kept tbo other on tho match while be sheltered it in his hands frrn the'wind. Presently a puff of wind blow it out. The nex&time

arouod he said:

•Gotamatch?" AS "Yes—in my other vest. Help me out,

"Not for JbB."-1 ,, When came around again I said: Excuse the seemingly importinent curiosity cf a drowning man, but will you explain this singular conduct of yours?" "With pleasure. I am the coroner.— Don't hurry omtoy account. I can wait for you. But I wish I bad a match

I said: "Take my place, and I'll go and get you noe.'' He declined. This lack of conGdence on his part created a coolness between us, and from that time forward 1 avoided him. It was'my idea in case anything happen to me, to so time the occurrence as to throw my custom into the hands of the opposition coroner over on the American side. At last a policeman came along and arrested me for disturbing tbe peace by yelling at people on shore for help. The Judge fined me, but I had the. advantage of him. My money was with my pantaloons, and my pantaloons wore with the Indians.

Thus I escaped. I am now lyiog in a

very critical condition. 4Ws«t,H #m lyingjiny way—-critical or not critic*!. I am hurt all o^fr, but I CMinot tell the fall extent yet, 'because tM doctor is not done taking ttm inveratory. He witt make out my manifest this evening.— However, thus far, ho thinks only sir of my wounds are fatal. I don't mind the others. Upon regaining my right mind, I said "It an awful savage tribe of Indians that do the bead work and mcccasins for N W are they "Limerick, my son."

I shall not be able to finish my remarks about Niagara Falls till I get better.
