this city we learn that tho receipts of the Western Union Telegraph Compauy, for the month of June, were $590,994,31. Deducting expenses, $381,546,85, left a clean profit of $209,447,46 I The month of June is usually reckoned the dullest month of the year. S

following paragraph
which we find in the correspondence from this city to the Indianapolis Sentinel, without foundation, so far as we are aljle to learn:
Chauncy Rose, Esq., a man who has done more toward making Terre Haute what she now is, than any twenty other men in the place, offers to donate the plat of grofnd opposite the Terre Haute House and $100,000, if the county will build a court house, costing not less than $300,000 thereon. I believe the matter has been taken under advisement by the authorities. Would that we had a few generous, public.spirited capitalists like Mr.
In Indianapolis.
THE BLOOMFIELB ROAD.—In
conver
sation with a gentleman from Worthing ton yesterday morning, he informed us that since the opening of the road to In dianapolis, wheat has been pouring into that village in onormpus quantities for shipment to Indianapolis, and to that city the great part of the trade goes that heretofore has been bestowed upon this city. He gives it his opinion from an extensive acquaintance with tho people that nearly all this trade will return to this city
soon as railroad communica
tion is established—provided the same is done immediately. As it is, the people are exceedingly loth to give up old asso ciations, as evidenced by tho fact that as he came up ho met on tho way a wagon load of merchandize going down frjm this city.
T*ACHINQ.GERMAN.—Hon.B.O.
Hobbs,
Superintendent of Public Instruction, ha9 announced the following opinion in regard to the obligation to teach German in the public schools: "The provision of the law is express tbat whenever the parents and guardians of twenty-five or moro children in attendance at any school of a township, town or city, shall so demand it shall be the duty of the Trustees to employ efficient ttachers, and introduce tho German language as a branch of study into such schools. It is not required tbat twentyfive pupils shall desiro to study German. This provision of the law will be satisfied by furnishing all pupils desiring to study the German language with a competent teacher of that language. Ordinarily one teacher of the German language will bo sufficient for the schools ot a city or town but if pupils cannot be accommodated without tjie employment of a greater number, a greater number must bo employed. It is not intended that any of the public schools shall be taught in German. On the'eontrary, it is expressly provided that they shall be taught the English language. TheGermtfti language is not to be the language of the school but a branch of study."

SCHOOL ROOMS,
and note the mqgns used for the improvement of the mirrd and see if we, as teach ers and instructors, cannot find something that i^y with profit be incorpora ted into our own theories for imparting ideas. The school-room first visited was ia building No. 1, where we found some twenty-seven boys attending school in the forenoon. These lads read in the First and Second Readers and study Primary Arithmetic and* Elementary Geography. These little fellows aro being taught in very crtditable manner by Mrs.Sarah Ainsworth, who was-connected with the public schools of the city of Ogdensburg, New York, for five years and res' her position there to pccept of a situation in the Reform" School, at Salem, Iowa, and from there she came to Indiana to labor for the bad and homeless, to aid in reforming and educating them, and fit* ting them for good and law-abiding citi zsns. Mrs. A. is very much of a lady and an excellent teicber. lite a imm b^r oT tbe^oys in'lhis grade who 'drd- not know the letters of the alphabet when ad milled lo tho school can now read intell gently in tho Second Reader.
Bidding *he boys and teacher "good moraing,'1 we took our leave of them and in company with the gentlemanly Super intendent, who look especial pains to make our visit a plertinVbne add to give us much valuable information relative to the inmates, and the work generally, we paid a vieit lo the"family building sun ber two, and in the tchool room we found Brother Thotn&s bard'ai ~i|r6rk "(^aching the young ideas how to shoot' and judging from the interest manifies by the twenty-five boys,.who meet in this school room every forenoon to, make bet ter their mental condition, we would have no hesitation in pronouncing Brother Thomas a first-class educator. The boys inthis grado~pursue all tbb studies tis ually taught in our "first-class schools in the country and are reported as making commendable progress. The readiness with which these boys, responded to all questions asked them, showed that they were familiar with the rules of Arithoto tic, Grammar, Reading and Spelling and are experts at calculating. Mr. Thomas is a young man of considerable experience having been connected with the Hpijaes«f Refuge of Chicago and St. Louis, but, says the contrast is so great that he never can make it seem to him that he is now engaged in a Reform School. Tho means for restraining evil in tho Houses of Refuge of the country are very different from the mild and humane iraatiiient 'at
Reform School or Home for the tender waifs who have permitted their frail barks lo drift out on the boistrous ocean of life wilb no hind, or willing band at the rudder to steer the little ship inU a safe harbor.— There aro but ten grades or classes, in school during the fortnoofe session, the other boys being at work in the field, garden and on "trusty jobs," &c. After leaving school room No. 2, we found our way to the nice, brick bakehouse, where
Miss Sarah,' Crow and Anderson, two of the boys, were doing a large amount

Everything was in '.-tip-top" order, and speaks well for the lady in charge of the bake boose.— Now we go to tho milk house, and find Hodgeoo, another boy, busily engaged taking care of the morning's milk, (tntf getting ready to churn. Turning backs to the milk house, we take a few steps and enter the dining rooms for officers and boys, and behold Mise Rose
Howe, Garcett, Pairburn and "Tom" Col well, (colored), three more boys, putting some extra touches on the floor and ta' bias. Neatness and good order seem to be cardinal virtues in every department of this excellent Institution.

And now leave you, for I am quite sure it will be quite impossible for mo to finisn my letter aftei' onjoying the hospitalities of tha school, in tho shape of a good dinner gotten up in first-class style.

"Tramp, tramp, tramp," we keep on the march and make our debut in the tailor shop where Mrs. Gardner is at her post of honor, leading on to victory James Dunn, Goodman, Manna and Daniej Cunningham.
