hope the reader will "see through it" "Parents amid the dazzling splendors and leisure of wealth,

The favorite idea of° Sunday is "a day Tof rest-" ,The reading of a column like the above would afford hard and c.ontin 7- uous work enough to make many converts 1 to the eight hour movement.
Terrible Warning Against Levity The Aliance (Ohio) Democrat
relates
the following: An incident of death by lightning is the neighborhood of Youngstown, which occurred Bome two weeks ago, was related to us a few days since. It appears that a couple of young men were out in a harvest field when a heavy thunder atorm approached, and they started toward the barn, one of them carrying a pitch-fork on his shoulder. As tbe lightning flashed most vividly, his companion asked him to put the fork down, as it was aaost dangerous to carry "it. He replied that "Ged Almighty wouldn't strike him," and just as the words were uttered he was struck dead, the stroke mangling him in a horrible manner. The fork tines were melted and his boots were torn from his feet
This may serve as another terrible warning to those set at defiance the power and authority of Him who sendeth and directeth the lightnings.

want shall compel me to do ,J I gh&ll always confine my^e truth, except when it is with inconvenience I shall ,ly rebuke all lormsof crime and uct, except when committed by iy inhabiting my own vest I shall ake use of slang or vulgarity upon jccasion or under any circumstances never use profanity except in digcuf6•house rent and taxes. Indeed, upon cond thought, I will not even uBe it then fo* it is unchristian, inelegant and de grading—though to apeak truly I do not seo how house rent and taxes are going to be discussed worth a cent without it. I shall not often meddle with politics, be cause we have a political editor who is already excellent, and only needs to serve a term in the penitentiary in OTder to be perfect. I shall not write any poetry, un less I conceive a spite against tbe subecri bers.
Such is my platform. I do not see any. earthly use in it but custom is law, and custom must be oboyed no matter how much violence it may do to one's feelings And'this custom which lam slavishly, following now, is surely one of the least necessary that ever came into vogue. In private life a man does not go and trumpet his crime before he commits it, but your new editor is such an important per sonago that he feels called upon to write a "salutatory" at once, and he puts into it all that he knows, and all that he don know, and some things he thinks he knows but isn't certain of. And be parades his list of wonders which he is going to per form of reforms which ho is going to introduce, and public evils which he is going to exterminate and public bless ings which be is golpg to create and public nuisances which he Js going to abate. He spreads this all out with op pressive solemnity over a column and half of large print, and feels that tbe country is saved. His satisfaction over it ia something enormous. He then settles down- to his miracles and inflicts profound platitudes anh impenetrable wisdom upon a helpless public as long as tb«^r can stand it, and then they send him off ^Oon sul to some savage island in the Pacific in the vague hope that the cannibals will like him well enongh to eat him. with an inhumanity which is but a fitting climax to bis career of persecution, instead of packing his trunk at once he lingers to think upon his benefactors a '***ledict°ry. If there is anything more uncalled for than a "salutatory.'- It is one of those tear ful, blubblering, long winded "valedic tories"—wherein a man who has been an noying the public for ten years can not take leave of-them without sitting down to cry a column and a half. Still, it is tbe custom to write valedictories, andcus torn sfiould be respected. In my secret heart I admire my predecessor for de dining to print a valedictory, though in public I say and shall continue to say sternly, it is custom, and he ought to have printed one. People never read them any more than they do the "aalnta trries," but nevertheless he ought to have honored the old fossil—ha ought to have printed a valedictory. I said as much to him, and he replied "I have resigned my place—rl have departed this life—I am journalistically dead, at present, ain't I?" "Yes.1' "Well, wouldn't you consider itdis graceful in a corpse to ait up and com ment on the funeral?"
I record it here, and preserve it from oblivion, as the briefest and best "valedictory" that has yet come under my notice

The Self-Immolation ofl.TOO Russians. From tbo I*al! Mall Gazette.] All the extraordinary proceedings of the many fanatical sects whose rapid increase has excited so much anxiety iQ Russia, are fairly thrown into the shade by a terrible act of self-immolation, which is reported from the Government at Saratoy. A few months ago the prophets of a new religion majle their appearance in that part of tbe empire, preaching selfdestruction by fire as the only sure road to salvation and so readily was their dreadful doctrine received by the ignorant and superstitious peasantry, that in one large village no less than seventeen hundred persons assembled in some wooden homes and having barricaded the doors and windows, set the buildings on fire and perished in tbe flames. The authorities are doing all they can to stay the progress of this new madness, but their task is obviously a difficult one. The punishments which tbe law oan inflict mu^thave little terror for enthusiasts who deliberately choose a death so horrible as tbe true road to heaven.
A young lady residing near Earlville, Canada, wearing a highly-polished silver pin, was looking at the eclipse considerably, through the ordinary smoked glass, during the time of the transit, and afterward discovered that the eclipse bad daguerrotyped itself upon her pin at the time that tbe sun was about half obscured. The impression remains there permanently, resisting the action of rubbing, as well as exposure to the atmosphere.

Housefcold Cares to be Lightened. |*iob Yotk World.] Jennie Jane, in one of her fashion'letters, points out that tbe days of family sewing are numbered. Already, ma distes have partially usurped the {tlace of tbe dressmaker, who used to inflict herself upon the homes of men, causing dreadful havoc with all the household arrangements, leaving infinite litter, and making the lives of tbe male members of the unhappy family upon which she was visited, a grievous burden to them for days to-. getheiu Bat the great and sacred department of female under-clothiug was at least reserved from the invasion of tradesmen. But now—as anybody may see, who will take the trouble and have the hardihood to read tbe advertisements of almost any ladies' paper—all these things, are made at manufactories, and made, moreover, better and more cheaply t^an they con be made at home.
Not only are cloaks and suits knd dresses to be bought ready-made, but articles of which the bachelor has no business to know anything, and which the modest husband, even, blushes to think of, and utterly refuses to name, are calmly enumerated in these columns with minute and revolting particularity their very dimensions calmly and ruthlessly mentioned, and a list of prices affixed.— All tho leading dry goodB houses now keepjsuch things, and every mother of a family will be forced to buy them there, inasmuch as the advantages which great firmB possess for furnishing them are infinitely superior to their own. In spite of tbe saddening aspect of this fact, w« are disposed to hail it as opening a new avenue to female labor, and lightening one of the heaviest of household cares.— There is no reason why the home should be invaded by the makers of female gar ments any more than it now is with the makers of male garments. And there is no more reason why a wife and mother should bring her dressmaker or her Seamstress bome than there is why a man should take his tailor to bis hearth and heart, and spend days with bim in sweet counsel about tbe cut of his pantaloons
Daring Deed of a Magdalen at Louisville. The attention of passers-by was on Wednesday morning attracted by some strips of unbleached muslin dangling from the third story window of a convent in Louisville.
The investigations of the curious revealed the fact that a young woman named Hattie Gibson had used the means ipr dicated by the dangling strips for escaping from the establishment.
She had gone to the convent, having, perhaps, some vague notions of reformation, which soon vanished, however, but to her surprise she found that the Mother Superior positively refused to grant her liberty to leave the house.
On Friday night she cut a sheet into strips, and about one o'clock in the morning made tbe perilous descent with fearful rapidity. She fortunately dnet two men whom she knew, and who directea her to her former boarding house, whither she precipitately fled. She declares she would rather have jier neck broke than return to the convent.
