BASE BALL.—An interesting game of Base Ball was played yesterday afternoon between the Crascent and Independent clubs. THEMARKETS are abundantly supplied with all the substantial and many of the delicacies that the real or fancied wants of people require. What is gratifying, is that prices aro much below those which prevailed a year ago, or at any time for the past six or seven years. Matters are! now gatting into a shape that a laboring man may not expend a week's wages to buy food to provision his family from Saturday until Monday. The supply ©fi Food is so abundant that not only the producer is amply rewarded at the re. duced prices obtained, but ths impoverished consumer enabled to have plenty and to spare in his larder. The only arti-J GREINER & FORREST will commence cle of prime necessity that keeps up to the I their regular evening sales this week. Ooa COUNTY FAIR IS near at hand, and tbe officers of the Agricultural Society are actively at work to make it a success We do not mean to disparage Vigo county in the eyes of outsiders when we say there is les? interest taken iu Agricultural Fairs here than almost any other county In tbe State, but to wako up our people to the importance of making an interesting show at the coming Fair. There is scarcely & county in the State with as much good land as Vigo and the season has been unusually propitious for the farmer and gardner. Every one cannot have tbe best, but let everyone bring to the fair the best he ha, and compare it with hia neighbor?, while we all enjoy a good social lime in our beautiful fair grounds, the handsomsst in the Stale.

KEEP SOBER.—There is one argument for temperance which ought to be considered by every young man. A man who i8«subject to the loss of self-control under the influence of liquor, can never enjoy that confidence which makes him eligible to responsible duties whatsoever good qualities he may po&sess when sober. Intoxication instantly destroys a mans sanity. All his worthy qualities vanish at its approach. Hence no excellence of character can redeem such an one from the distrust of those who would employ him. It is one of the greatest vexations to a business man and one of the worst disadvantages to his employe to bo obliged to say, as wo have ofien heard, ''Yes, Mr, So«and-so is a9 good a man as ever need be. I would trust him with any thing he is abundantly capable if he would only keep sober. But I can never know when he will got drunk, and hence I dare not trusthim at Anytime."

ROLLING MILLS AND IRON FUR NACES IN TERRE HAUTE AND BRAZIL.

ADVXSTLGE8"D? RAILROAD TRANSPORTA'RTOH FOB IRON ORE AND C0AJ OYER IN DIANAPOLIS.

Indianapolis seekB td-place herself in position, having advantages over Terre Haute, and other places, her neighbors, in tbe procuring of iron ores and coal for the manufacturing of pig and bar iron

Let no obstacle be thrown in her way towards the accomplishment cf so lauda ble an enterprise. Lot nature and art unite, all their riohnesss and s^pngtb to aid her in the praiseworthy ambition Let wealth and b-isin,«w? talent lay bold and do their bast to perform their part of tbe ncessary work. Let a scientific and professed gfblogist be employed to shake his wand through all the adjacent coun ties to Marion, and bring up from the depths bejoy, #11 the b'eck coal and iron ores he can (ind,

an(j vhen

it is done, let

the men of capital and senge *it down and count tbe cost of manufacturing at Indianapolis, and also at Terre Haute and Brazil, Clay county.

Let him begin on tbo transportation and cost of tbe iron ores and block coal necessary to begin the work for to ibisimportant Hem, bolb places must come in figures and must go to the Lake Superior or Missouri mines for tbe largest part of their ore for extensive iron manufacturing.

Now, which of the two places, Terre Haute or Indianapolis, has

and

xcill

Making transportion for ore...203 miles Now £dd for hor block coal not less than fifty miles, and you have for Indianapolis for coal and ifo.a two hundred and fifty miles of railroad transportation Not a mile less than this can she lay them down at her furnaces.

Now how stands Terre Haute in regard to these facilities. Terre Haute to Danville 49 miles Danvillo to Chicago 123

Total 172 miles Thus giving Terre Haute the advan tSge of thirty-three miles in getting the ore from Chicago and seventy-two miles from Missouri. Add for tbe transportation of tbe block coal from Btazil sixteen miles, makes one hundred and eightyeight miles ot transportation of coal and ores together, giving to Terra gaute the advantage in the Lake Superior ores atujl coal from Brazil of sixty.seven miles, and for the furnaces at Brazil of sevenlvsevea miles, when the shortcut railroad made. As applied to the Missouri ores and block coal from Clay county, Terre Hante has the advantage of one hundred and nine miles less railroad freight

It is absurd then for Indianapolis to be boasting of her superior advantage^ for leaking pig and ba? iron, or any other iron or nails. She has advantages, but neither nature and art, or nature and art with wealth, talent, and geological sci» enca combined, can place her in so ad-

I TEREE llADrr, IBD., iugnst 9th, 1889, To the City of Terre Hante and Yiclnity:

Ilmpceters,

We have this day appointed B. V. Merrill as sole agent fir the saleot onr Superior Block Ool for Terre Hante, aad all others representing tfcenvaelToa egeqta from oar Bank may beconaidcred aa wahave traasferred to Mr. Merrill excluilre right.. The quality of this coal oannot bs mrpaasad for gaaerai purposes by ary «. 01ayf^an¥}. Ver,

In acceptance of the above agenoy, I would •lata for the benefit JT all who have heretofore been using othelr qualities, which were generally acoonpaaied by oheapar ra»aasay U^lil^o, that these qnalltfei were very Inferior to that wbicb I now fe, particularly that trom tbe "Otter Oreek Goal Company," or any bank with which there is a furnace connected, Inasmuch as no better than second or third rate, that which cannot be used forlnrnaoo purposes, ever sees the Terre Haute market, for whlah agents charge almost the same ratea at which much better can be furnished, These facts I can substantiate, if necessary for coaTiacing proof. I will, at all times, use my best endaavora to aocommo4aie, boih as regards quality aad quantity aad price, and trust by clqse attention to all orl«rt, to receive a liberal share of patroneg). For further Ioformation please call ai my offlce at the old sta of Kogles Tutt, No. 1 ffT Main street,
