Keokuk Convention.
The Commercial Convention which is to meet in iveokuk on Tuesday, 7th inst will be a matter of no small importance to the businee3 of tbe Mississippi Valley Present appearances indicate that Indi. ana will not he represented at the Con vention. This ought hot to be. Gov ernor Baker has requested, by circular, that the citizens of the differed Congres sional Districts Belect delegates and name them to him, that he may commission them. We have not noticed that this suggestion has been acted upon in any in stance. In this Btate of things the Gov ernor ought to make appointments him self. Almost any of tbe prominent busi ness men of the State would doubless at tend the Convention, and represent the State there, if requested and appointed so to do, by the Governor. Those interested in the navigation and business of the Ohio river would surely do so. Let the Governor make the appointments at all events.
The Administration.
The Democratic presj is constantly filled with sneering flings at Gen. Grant and his Cabinet. This may be expected It is apart of the tactics of the Democ racy. Gen. Grant can do nothing to satisfy that party, nor does he attempt to do so. His personal taste3and recreations aro constantly paraded before tbe public and scoffed at by the Democracy. But all this amounts to nothing in the way of argument. Gen. Grant's Administration is going on steadily, retrenching the public expenditures, reducing the national debt, introdncing honesty and economy into all the departments of the Government, collecting the revenue and promoting the general welfare of the country. These elements of succeu ensure the Administration popular favor, and will continue to do so despite all tbe malevolence and sneers of the Democracy.

The Byron Scandal. I was generally selected for the purpose. .* During the first day's battle at Gettys Tbe article, in the September number of
the Atlantic, from the pen of Mrs. Stows, I ]en
styled "the true story of Lady Btron's life," but known in the newspapers as the "Btboh Scandal," like all sensational pro ductionshas awaked a great deal of comment by the press. Public criticism is almost wholly "against both the truthfulness and the taste of the article- It is generally regarded as a mere mass of foolish gossip which bad no real'foundatlon and which has been resurrected by the writer of the article for a sensation in this country. There can be, at this late day, no good purpose subserved by reviling the characters of Lord Btron and his half sister Augusta Leigh, or idolizing the virtues of Lady Btron. They have all passed off the stage of life. Lord Byron died at Missolooghi) in Western Greece, in April, 1824—more than fortyfive years ago. History has made up the record of his virtues and foibles. The world has paid unceasing tribute to his genius and his verse will be read and admined as long as the English language exists. During nearly a half century the tongue of slander, though busy with his memory, has never uttered against him such vile and improbable charges as those juat put forth by our American au thorese. They lack however the remotest appearance of truth, and putlklrs. Stottk in the attitude of a mere literary jackal It is a pity for her own reputation that she did not leave her last task undone There is something about an assault upon tbe dead that is neither courageous or de cant and from which all true persons recoil in disgust. No one of proper re. Unement would have taken delight in ex huming such a story as Mrs.

The next most noticeable officer here is General Kane, of Pennsylvania, who raised and commanded the celebrated Bucktail Begiment, and was subsequently made Brig. General for gallantry.
He is a mild, quiet, medest looking man, and the last person one would select for a military genius.
He is accompanied by his wife and came expressly to meet General Lee.— President Grant has recently been spending several days at his house.

The Baccoon iz a resident ov the United States ov America he emigrated tew this country soon after il3 diakovery by Columbus, without a cent, and nothiog but hiz clawB tew git a living with.

He resides among the .heavy timber, and cultivates the cornfields and nabring garden sass for sustenance, and understands his bizzness.
Hiz family consists ov a wife and three children, who liv with him on the ipsibe ov a tree.
He can alwus be found at home during the day, reddy tew receive calls, but his nights are devoted tew looking after hiz own affairs.
He dresses in soft fur, and hiz tail, which iz round, haz rings on it. Theze rings are ov the same material that the tail iz, and are worn upon all occasion*.
During the winter he ties himself up into a hard not and lays down by hiz fira(ide.
Wben spring opens, he opens, and goes out tew see how tho chickens hav wintered. Hiz life iz sz free from labor az a new penny, and if it wasn't for the dogs and the rest ov mankind, the raccoon would find what everybody else haz lost-™* heaven upon earth.
But tbe dogs tree him and the men skin him, and what thera is left ov him ain't worth a cuss
He is not a na'.ral vagabond like the hedgehog and the alligator, but luvs to be civilized and liv amung folks but he haz one vice that the smartest missionary on earth kan't redeem, and that iz tbo art uv stealing.

The Buffalo Commercial gives the following description of the "velocipede on which '-Professor" Jenkins took his "dar ing ride across the Niagara river on a tight-rope "The machine is a decidedly curious affair, having about as much the appearance of a velocipede as of a spinning wheel. We will attempt to describe it but have very little faith in our ability to do it successfully. In the first place, there are two wheels of wood. The front wheel is three feet and two inches in diameter, with a groove of some inches in depth. The inside of the groove is lined with small brass cogs. Tbe rear or 'hind' wheel, is two feet and ten inches in di ameter, grooved like the other, but without cogs. Attached to the axle of the front wheel, apd coming beneath the rope, is aawtof heavy Jron fork this fork is attached to a circular iron frame hanging at such a distance beneath the rope that the feet of the operator may rest upon it. From this circular frame anoth er fork—also enclosing the rope—leads to the rear wheel. In fact the machine is so fastened to the rope that it is absolutely impossible to get it off without unscrewing the nuts and taking off the bolts by which it is secured. "Across the iron c.irbl.e helpw, and firmly strapped thereto, is a balan.ce-pole, consisting a square iron ba?, eigtyt feet length, with an iron ball weighing ten pounds at each end. Tbe weight beneath, it will be seen, preserves the two wooden wheels in position upon the rope, rendering anything like an upset out of the question, "The saddle upon whjcb the 'Professor' sits when riding the 'velcpipede'^ is simply a heavy leather band, some eight or ten inches ia width, fastened to the stationary portion of«either wheel, and resting upon the rope. Tbe propelling power consist of a cog wheel lastened to the forks supporting tbe front wheel of tbe velocipede. The latter is turned by two short handles, working toward the operator, tbG cogs playing into tiiose of the large wheel, sending it ahead. But little power is required to turn the cranks and propel the machine, except wben turning on an up grade. "Tbe operator places kis feet upon the iron fram-work to which tbe balance-pole is attached, and, to regain his equilibrium at any time, has only to rest his weight upon tbe rope of which be is astride, with his leather saddle beneath him—the machine, of course, immediately balances itself. There were no guys to the cable, and hence no impediment to the grooved wheels.'
That Delaware Marriage Law. They have a queer law in tbislilliputian State about the gordian knot of matrimony. It requires tbe "naughty men," before leading one of the Delaware lambs to the saoriflclal altar, to giye bonds for good behavior. The unlucky swain who may have more love than credit may cast about in an agony of suspense, waiting for some enterprisiog individual to go upon his bond in the sum of two hundred dollars lawful money, and be compelled, in default of ths conjugal straw bail, to forego all "the sweets of tbe honeymoon Thus great distress is broughtpn innocont parties, who are crneliy "kept o?tof i£efr property by a riiiculous old Jaw totally at variance with the present advanced stage of civilization, and which wickedly interferes with that magna charta of yonng people, the right of elopement. A vigorous effort is being naade to abolish the law, and thus put the young folks of that fossil State on a footing with tboge of Chicago for instance.

In December it a dozen
miles further north, »nd will "very soon reach the line of New BrtjnswJck, where it will meet a road finished or nearly so to St. John and the east. There is a short
fax to Sacramento. Whether this railway will vindicate its title, and become a trans-continental road, it is too early to tell. It would shorten the sea passage, and probably expedite travel, to land European passengers at Halifax instead of New York. And yet only such as require haBte, and to whom a few hours is a great gain, ivill be likely to break their transition there. Still it will not be difficult to organize a direct line for Europe .by this road, and steamship from Haliax, which shall take a profitable amount of travel, if not of traffic. Whatever effect it may have on transoceanic travel, it will open those pastern provinces and connect them with us, and become one of the bonds which is yet to knit their destiny and ours together. It will facilitate and stimulate intercourse. It will bring them to us and carry us to them. It is the poetic theory, and seems to have been, so far, tbe irresistible fact, that tbe star of empire and the tide of enterprise lakes its way westward. And so this road would be only an outlet. But there are resources in these eastern re gions which must draw people from somewhere, and if from Enropo and the further East, why not from the We«t?
