few days since, we
published an article which was going the rounds of the papers, giving an account of the comet, said to be visible in the northwest, and which was likely to come uncomfortably near thts plaBet of ours. It was even suggested that, as no tail was yetrvisiWe, it was probable the comeV~was heading directly toward us, with its tail where it Bhould be, behind it and out of eight and that it would take some sharp work to dodge it. Now comes the Chicago
Tribune
and spoils the whole story:
1. No such prediction has ever.been made by any scientific man, so far as knowp. The story was originated a quarter which no astronomer regards as trustworthy. 2. No such comet appeared during the month of August. 3. There is no comet visible as described. Tbeonly wanderer now seen in that quarter is tbe planet upiter, who, although he has been held responsible for the perfbrmaaee of »nany strangefreaka..amang the comets, is far from being "hair-like'' litaunlf. ..03 L,- 7.
Z'i
And, finally, though wo do not mean to say that a comet, hitherto unknown, may not now be Approaching the earth, tertalnly none that has. hitherto appeared, and whoso return is a matter of accurate calculation, is nearing
nt.
But we do
not know of any report from any scientific quarter that any such celestial body is visiblo anywhere. Therefore, if any credulous persons have been made unhappy by these portents dire of plagues, and desolatihg wars, and crash of worlds, they may dismiss their fears and be legitimately and safely miserable ab?ut the weather.
The Institute met yesterday morning and was called to order at 9 o'clock A. If., by Thomas B. Long, Esq, County School examiner, who in a short and ap propriate address set forth the advantages of holding institutes after which be gave it in charge of Prof. Wm. H. "Wiley, who is to superintend it during the week. Prof. "Wiley conducted the devotional exercises. On motion James Townley was appointed Secretary. Prof. "Wiley then addressed the Institute, in which he discussed at length the lollowing points
First, the teacher assumes the position of guardian of ihe children second, he must be and act what he would have his pupils become third, he must advance with the age and its interesU he must endeavor to have pupils become better citizens than he has been able to become fourth the teacher's work calls for dignity of character, self-command, and self-sacrifice fifth, the teacher is an unconscious instructor from the very substance of his character sixth, the teacher's face is the mirror through which the doings of his soul are seen sevonth, there is room in the teacher's profession for enlarged development.
After a brief recess Mr. Byers toak up the subject of Grammar. He said English composition should precede and ac„ company the study of English grammar through all the grades. As soon as pupils can readily distinguish the parts of speech, take up particulars of each such ai numbers and gender of nounf, kinds of verbs, &a. Educe the rules of syntax from the pnpils themselves, by leading them to observe ihe usages of language. Not dog. matically say, a verb must agree with its nominative in number and person.
In the afternoon Mr. Valentine pre sented tbesubject of Arithmetic, and gave instructions on Notation, Numeration, Addition and Subtraction
Mr. Townley introduced the subject of" Penmanship. Penmanstip he aaid is a science as well as an art. The science is acquired by study, and tbe art by A good hand writing is, a letter of recommnndatinn.
